Seeing as that it's been nearly a year since I've attended one of these things, I figure that it's high time that I show up.

See you guys there. (wherever there is)

I liked Revival the last/first time I was there, but that experience was colored by it being a Sunday afternoon right after St Patty's, so it might be a tad different on a Friday night.

I may regret doing this, but I have to recommend Temple Bar on Lafayette, which has become my regular.

It's spacious, comfortable, quiet enough to hear people talk, the pours are generous, they rock a major selection of both gins and vodkas, the wings are amazing, and we took something like twenty people there after my Cooper Union talk the other week, so I know they can handle crowds.

Temple Bar serves up a damn good martini. Don't know why, as there really shouldn't be so much variance in martini quality from one bar to the next, but they always seem to taste particularly nice there. Must be the popcorn accompaniment. Oh, crap. There I go plate of beansing my martinis and hangs again.

psmealey--
Martinis are best served ice-cold.
Too often the 'tender won't chill the frigging glass.
Maybe the Templers know that.
I'd be honored to buy you one, but I'm not in town until the 16th.

Temple sounds cool, although I might run into former coworkers there, it's right up Lafayette from my old job. Not necessarily a bad thing, I left on good terms.

Sounds like Crash's appearance is bringing out all the antisocial losers folks who can't usually make it to meetups! :)

Tongue in cheek, since I myself tend to miss more meetups than I attend :(

Detour on 13th, between 1st and 2nd (closer to first, north side) ... was surprisingly cool and not crowded. Very cool bartenders and clientèle, more of a neighborhood bar.

Also Madhatters is never crowded and is roomy, also really cool staff -- Lexington between 26th and 27th ...

Both are 4AM, I am nearly positive.

%@! Stuck in the Bay Area till early summer. Keep missing my chance to put handles to faces. adamgreenfield is correct- the Temple Bar is gorgeous, spacious, and the drinks are perfectly mixed. I feel far more sophisticated and civilized than I am whenever I spend an evening there. But my rec. is to arrive earlier if you want any chance of colonizing a table on a Friday night. At the worst, the career alcoholics can start drinking earlier before the rest of the cast arrives.

So, let's hear some more details for those of us too lame to attend. Did you rowdy bastards get 86d from the Temple Bar? Where did you all end up?
posted by psmealey at 6:49 AM on May 5, 2007

We left Temple after we realized how our normal antics (taking photos, talking about cocks loudly, etc) were getting us the stink eye. I'm not sure if we were officially 86'd, but I do feel as if the waitstaff was taking mental polaroids of us, and filing under the "do not ever let these fuckers back in" folder. It was nice, but for our group, it was just a little off. As jonmc put it, "We need a place where you can piss outside."

We then trekked, Oregon-trail style, to a second bar (Manitoba's?) which had a kick ass jukebox and was playing the Mariners/Yankees game. The drinks were significantly cheaper, which was the catalyst for the group to splinter off. Some went off to Karaoke, others to Katz's, and apparently a third to rooftops. It was definitely the Choose-your-own-adventure of meetups, and fantastically fun.
posted by piratebowling at 7:25 AM on May 5, 2007

Nah. It was just too expensive-$9 a beer. So we went over to Manitoba's on Ave B, cheaper, more relaxed atmosphere, and Handsome Dick was around and said hi. Then we went to katz's and ate sandwiches. a good time was had by all.
posted by jonmc at 7:26 AM on May 5, 2007

And after the sandwiches ... group sex!
posted by mr_crash_davis at 7:27 AM on May 5, 2007

posted by piratebowling at 7:35 AM on May 5, 2007

Yeah, the group sex was an overpriced ripoff, IMO.
posted by mkultra at 8:02 AM on May 5, 2007

Yeah, we left Temple Bar because it gently and lovingly licked the pungent sweat off enormous donkey balls in hopes of attaining something of nutritive value, when, in fact, all it did was make the donkey happy and the rest of us sad.

So we took the party to Manitoba's, which, being a straight-up-solid-New-York-Bar-with-a-capital-B, provided us with a space for endless hijinks and merriment.
posted by Afroblanco at 9:33 AM on May 5, 2007

There were a lot of people there, and it was impressive how large the group stayed as it moved to (at least) three different venues, none of which were very close to the others.
posted by bingo at 9:52 AM on May 5, 2007

One MeFite's experience:

1. Temple is way too dark and expensive a bar to serve a TGIF-esque cocktail like their "Fenced In By a Wall of Fudge".

2. The waiter tried to push me around. When he told me I couldn't sit at (or near) the overcrowded grownup's table, I said sweetly, "But it will just be awkward if I'm standing!" Later, I saw him cringe when I violated their carefully cultivated sepulchral darkness with a flash photograph, and so I made sure to take several more, just when his pupils were sure to have dilated back into 8-balls.

3. I'm glad I got banished to the kids table (I prefer to think of it as being "sidebarred") because I got to meet the first-timers as they drifted in! As they practically sat on my lap one at a time due to seating constraints, I all but got to find out exactly what they wanted for Christmas and whether they've been good boys and girls. Please come visit us again.

4. Being ready to abndon Temple in a hot minute, the exodus to Manitoba's was refreshing. Our next meetup should be a parade.

5. I spilled a beer while bragging about my favorites. Guess I'll be off to rehab any day now.

6. The women of MetaFilter are HOTT.

7. A few a' you fellas ain't so bad yerownselves.

8. Karaoke dreams were made a reality. While Taliaferro deserves full credit for making it happen and for being our singalong mascot, I have never heard anything like Help, I Can't Stop Talking!'s version of "Tainted Love", which I think could probably be heard from the sidewalk-- man that kid's voice has a boomin' booty! Be there next time when Taliaferro, piratebowling, and I transform "Paradise By the Dashboard Light" into exquisite three-part harmony.

9. Also props to brujita, who, according to her song, might like you better if you slept together. It takes mucho attitude to successfully sneer through a song like that.

10. Apparently if you are late for your song because you are in the bathroom, they will totally back that shit up for you so you can have a do-over, sparing the crowd your Fiona Apple-like meltdown.

I love you all and would do it again in a second.

Dude, I'm flattered, but I'm married.

Everyone who decided not to go to karaoke missed the hell out. Sorry if I was overloud, hermitosis; I prefer volume over quality. We (at least, I) need an official karaoke meetup quite badly, kids. I'm dying without one, and last night's dry run confirmed the amount of talent and audacity this group can bring. I'm hoping brujita will agree to a duet of "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" with me next time.

Taliaferro performed "Take on me" by A-ha!. Help, I can't stop talking did "Tainted love" but mixed in the lyrics to Rihanna's "SOS" hermitosis did Roy Orbison's Blue Bayou ( think he did another, as well, but now I can't remember it). I did "Boys & Girls" by Blur, and brujita sang "Never say never" by Romeo Void.

I think that was everything. I paid to do "Space Oddity", but we all decided to leave early. Next time, major Tom.

It's so difficult to reach out, even when the players are right in front of you. I've always tended to gravitate to people I've met on IRC. So I managed to meet one new person from there. The rest of you, I'm sorry I couldn't break that barrier.

I have an ambivalent relationship with quintessentially New York institutions, so I'd like to thank jonmc for dragging a majority of us down to Katz's, which I previously avoided like the plague. Places with their own way of doing things scare me. To put it more plainly, I hate being a newbie at anything. The experience ended up being delicious.

And thanks to crash for calling this meetup in the first place. It was good to see you again.

It's okay as long as no one remembers the "Harry Met Sally" orgasm scene. Once someone does, and feels the need to re-enact it, it's over and time to go.

I was told in advance about that, at which time I promised a reenactment. Once we arrived, no one reminded me - which was probably for the best.

I would, however, like to see PICTURES WHICH I KNOW WERE TAKEN. I unfortunately forgot to bring my camera (left it in the rental car, which thankfully was completely unmolested. Apparently in NYC you can't judge a garage by its facade).
