Seoul meetup? May 11, 2007 2:12 PM   Subscribe

Hey hey hey there, Seoul brothers an' sisters! I'm swinging through your fair, river-cleaved burg for the two weeks beginning 22 May - my wonderful wife has a show (and a talk) at Insa Art Space, and I'm coming to help her mount it, see some old friends, and generally be her number-one fan. This is time enough, me thinks, to arrange quite the soju-fueled shindig. What say? (Stavros, I'm looking at you.)

"Helping your wife mount it" discussions belong in AskMe.

Heh, he said "help her mount it".

Also, I would totally like a Seoul shout-out if possible, tia

Is the meetup like this?

It would be if stavros still had hair.

Note: I have no actual knowledge of stavros' hair (or lack thereof).

I got most of my hair, in most of the right places.

I'll try, by god I'll try, Adam, to get up there one of those two weekends. Which Saturday night would be most drinkworthy for you?

stavros meets adamg sounds like a major MeFi event. Or an ill-considered rock 'supergroup'.

Seoul-ful shoutouts appreciated. It's wendell with 2 Es and 2 Ls

Oh, grand. I do b'lieve I'm open, man, though the 26th is trending better - I think we want to jump over to Tokyo for a day or two toward trip's end.

Now we just need to fix a time and place so all can dig our big crux. I know there are one or two other Peninsular MeFites at the very least - what works for you?

The 26th would work for me, I think, provided I get no work-related scheduling surprises. I'd be coming up from Jeollanam-do by bus on Saturday, which arrives at 동서울 terminal. I hate spending hours shuttling around on the subway or whatever, so my preference is to stay someplace relatively near the site of festivities -- I have a place in Gangnam near Samsung station I usually stay when I'm in Seoul, but I'm pretty much easy as far as location goes if somewhere else is easier for you, provided I can find somewhere to stay reasonably near.

As far as drinking establishments go, I have no idea.

You guys should meet at the COEX Mall. Just because I am amused at the idea of MeFites going all the way to Korea to hang out at the mall.

Wish I could join you guys, but I am currently nowhere near a subway line #2 stop.

Man, don't knock COEX - I got my second-favorite pair of shoes at that mall!

Stavros finally gets to a meetup! Nice.

Jellonam sounds like the place all Utah soldiers go to war.

I'm not knocking COEX, I'm a Gangnam girl all the way! But as far as drinking (or dining) goes, you're probably better off taking line #2 a couple of stops from Samsung station to Gangnam station. And my favorite soondaeguk place, Seocho Soondae, is a couple of blocks from Gangnam station.

Groovy. I'm a Seocho boy myself.

I just realized that sounds like a pied-a-terre or something. Nuh-uh. Just a cheap hotel where they know my face from repeated business trip stayovers.

Just in case you're interested at all: Jeolla is the province (sounds roughly like 'juhlla'), nam means 'south' and -do means 'province'. I live down in southernmost part of the peninsula, in South Jeolla Province.

Brittanie, Joseph Gurl, Meatbomb and the couple of other in-Korea mefites whose names escape me at the moment are MIA so far, so:

Shoot for the night of May 26 (Saturday)?
Somewhere in Gangnam (is that where you and Nurri are going to be, Adam)?

Ordinarily, yes, either in Bangbaedong or Cheongdam. This time I think we're staying somewhere up by Anguk...but Seocho/Bangbae is definitely preferable if at all possible.

ABORT! ABORT! ABORT!

Damn it. I've got to go to Pohang for biz this weekend, and on asking my wife if she wanted to come up to Seoul with me on the 26th to meet a Swell Internet Pal and his wife, she gave me The Look and reminded me that the 27th is our wedding anniversary (oops) and we'd planned long ago to go spend the day with her family.

I'm sorry, man. This looks like yet another wash for me, probably. If I lived nearer to Seoul than a 5-hour trip, I'd be able to do this kind of stuff more eaily...

In the space of a couple of days, I've gone from my old assumption that I'd never attend a meetup, to a weakening resolve, to deciding to attend and listen quietly and now I'm actually worried that it's off.

Am I the only one left?

I'll be in Seoul on the 24th through the 28th. The 24th happens to be Buddha's birthday (I was out of town or else I would have posted to this thread earlier). I was going to suggest a meetup around that day.

Here are some pictures, if you want to see how Seoul-ites celebrate Buddha's birthday (self link). I'm still open to a meet-up if anyone else is.
