Make flags work like favorites please. May 17, 2007 5:54 PM Subscribe
Without complaining about a specific thread, Matt, can we get "flagging" to be inline/ajaxy, as a drop down, rather than the press, choose, new page, back to thread? The way that the favorites work?
whew! for a second there I thought he was going to kill all the flags, too.

Also, I wouldn't mind if adding a *thread* to favorites had the same ajax-y format as adding a comment to favorites.

If possible, the flagging interface should remain unobtrusive (like today's [!]) until the user decides to flag a particular post, though.

There used to be a greasemonkey script that did this but it stopped working a while ago for some reason that I can't remember.

You should get some help moderating the site, Matt. That would help a lot.

I need (to survive, mind you) an interrobang entity following my username, at least here on the gray. Where do I go do demand that? Seriously, my girlfriend is gonna dump me if this doesn't happen.

Thread and comment backgrounds should lighten in colour progressively with each flag they receive, until they turn completely white with collective fury and disapprobation, because that would look more professional.
Oh wait, this isn't funny any more, either.

The asynchronous flagging greasemonkey script was indeed truly wonderful. But when flagging switched from GET to POST it was never updated, so it's been broken since then (last October I think?)

Indeed. I love the podcast and all, but I've accidentally clicked there instead of MeTa about 19 times now since the addition of that link, and those little flash bars were starting to make me rage a little.

I happen to know that Mr. Haughey gave a long hard look at a certain online petition and thereafter declared his intent to relocate the Metatalk link. You have not been disenfranchised.

Since the question that started this thread has been answered, let me use this as a place to make a minor suggestion.
How about making a mod's comments in Ask (and probably the blue), like "[Removed some comments, quit snarking.]" visible only to logged in members? That way, strangers (people without posting privileges) browsing through the site don't see things like that (and think less of us?).

Pfft, philomathoholic, if we wanted to create a good (dare I say, "professional"?) first impression, we'd have to do a lot more than that.

puke & cry: "There used to be a greasemonkey script that did this but it stopped working a while ago for some reason that I can't remember."
It's because Matt changed the flagging [!] to be a posted form which was a bit more difficult to haxify. It was right around the time he made the ajaxy favoriting, so I assumed ajaxy flagging was right around the corner and it wasn't worth my time to change the Greasemonkey.
Next pony: Please make a pogcast. kthx

So this is the place to heap praise for moving the metatalk link all the way to the right again? Hell yeah, all about that; lost track of how many times I misclicked there.
Seriously shouldn't be such a big deal, but I guess after several years of a far right click for serving up the day's drama change can me traumatic and hard to adapt to. I suppose kind of like when your parents get divorced but both live in the same town still. Sure you CAN easily go visit your dad but it's a hell of a lot more work than when he was just upstairs.
Oh, he IS in the same house but sleeping on the couch now? REGARDLESS. MY SECONDS ARE PRECIOUS.
Also, I hope this is the thread for overthinking things. I'm onboard with that too.

Wow, if anything else this thread really shows how people use the site differently. I think I've probably clicked on that MetaTalk link in the upper right about 5 times total in my life, if that. It's 95% through RSS and the other 5% through bookmarks for me. The fact that its order was disrupted didn't even register.
