Stan Chin made a post indentical to what I presume was the very first Metafilter post ever, 8 years ago today. As an anniversary commemoration I guess.

Just a question: why are the people posting on 14 July 1999 shown on their profiles as having joined during 2000?

I'm not sure why I'm interested.

So now it's those who remember history who are condemned to repeat it?

Doesn't this belong in the other thread?

When the site started, signups didn't have their date recorded. Some OG profiles say "sometime in 1999" or "sometime in 2000".

I think it's because they weren't posting on July 14 1999. That's when mathowie posted the thread, but the first comment wasn't actually posted until October 13, 2000. Right?

Happy Cat-Scan day, MeFi.

I don't think so. I'm pretty sure Matt said somewhere that he arbitrarily assigned the year 2000 to everyone who was a member at some point, because before that he didn't have records of when exactly people joined.

You may be right, but so am I. At least, if phooey's posting history is to be believed:

does anyone read the posts down here?

It was "Sometime in 1999" (cite).

Judging by the user numbers of posters in this thread, I'd say that these folks really were posting in 2000.

If you read Cortex's ReMeFi blog (the link ain't handy), he explains that it's a tradition to double-post the cat scan post...or something.

Ah, thanks, croutonsupafreak—I had the right idea but the wrong date.

this post in particular implies that it's MeFi's birthday as well as potentially cat-scan's birthday.

Looks like some sort of meta-birthday celebration.

I suppose my sarcasm probably didn't come through in the above. Maybe it'd be good to read the metatalk below...

Abiezer writes : So now it's those who remember history who are condemned to repeat it?

I think in this case it's more like: Those who repeat history are condemning the rest of us to remember it.

And in case you're wondering why the first-ever MeFi post is number 19, it's because posts 1 through 18 were all deleted on account of being doubles.
