Someone was doing some contact-mapping a while back—there was a post in Metatalk, I'll see if I can track it down unless someone beats me to it—and that looks like the raw data.

User contacts, I would imagine. Why, I have no idea.

Whoops.

It's a data set for this, a visualisation of Metafilter users and the links between them. You can click the blue Visualise button and see various different views of the data, like network diagrams.

I got the contacts part. The fact that it's on an IBM site within a subdirectory called "manyeyes" struck me as odd.

It has me connected to Eideteker TWICE. Once is enough, believe me.

That's the final canonical list of everyone who dies in the last Harry Potter, whoop it up folks, we have 'till tomorrow midnight and then we're all gonna see the big wizard in the sky.

Who cares, it doesn't have my name on it.

*cries*

Many Eyes is the name of IBM's infovis project.

Funny, I found the same list yesterday while searching for a thread through Google, just before the weird question scraping site was discovered.
posted by OmieWise at 8:16 AM on July 19, 2007

thank the lord I'm not on this else I'd be even more paranoid, hypervigilant and insomniac than I already am *snarks at self*

but seriously... i've seen many times text files show up on google with just lists of names on it. real names not handles. what are they? if you want to find them just google two full names together and you're bound to come up wiht a few of these - er I've done that to find coauthored articles and stuff

oops *goes off to find tinfoil hat*

Hey, cool. Using the nifty little java visualization tool I was able to spot at least one user I really needed to link to.

Jesus Q. Shatner-Christ, iconomy! You have a lot of contacts!
posted by loquacious at 8:33 AM on July 19, 2007

Wha? No I don't, ya silly. You have more than I do. Scroll down that thing and check out jessamyn's or languagehat's if you think I have a lot.
posted by iconomy at 8:49 AM on July 19, 2007

Err, nevermind. The visualizer had you all lit up like a pinball machine.

If you pan up you can see mathowie's contacts. Of which there are indeed many.

Whatever it is, it's put me up near the top, and that's got to mean it is good and right.
posted by Astro Zombie at 9:03 AM on July 19, 2007

Ack. My laptop cannot handle that visualization. I was hopping around trying to find where I was (nestled away in a lower quadrant turns out, nice and cosy) when I accidentally got sucked into some kind of unending zoom function, zeroed in on Jessamyn looking like a miniature sun in that network connection mode, all Spock-for-Alia like. I had to X out of there. Like a bad trip without the drugs.

It has Eidetaker connected to me twice as well, which is just right. We're, like, connected, me and my old buddy Eidetaker, if you know what I mean.
