I'd say this is ban worthy. It's not relevant whether or not you're interested in Harry Potter or not, or whether you care about book spoilers. The point is that reklaw made a post specifically designed to ruin the enjoyment of other mefites like a bully kicking over a sandcastle. He enjoys screwing with other users. Read his page. He collects complaints made about him like trophies. This is someone who is going to keep doing shit like this until someone shows him the door.

Am I overreacting?

Yep. I mean, seriously, the very idea of banning someone for posting a (probably untrue) spoiler about a damn children's book. Ridiculous.

Like I said in the thread, I posted it because the whole idea is, you know, funny. Every time there's a new Harry Potter book out we get this "OMG [insert character] dies" stuff all over the web, but the idea of the big finale being that the kid's pet owl kicks the bucket just tickled me.

I apologise for offending your delicate sensibilities. OMG WILLY WONKA GIVES HIM THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY!

If you do get banhammered, it won't just be for posting a spoiler about a kid's book. It'll be for a looong history of attention-seeking behavior that seems to be geared towards nothing more but getting a rise out of people. Come on, does your profile page indicate anything but?

Was this in the thread about Harry Potter spoilers?

No, it was a thread whose title was the spoiler. Thanks to the RSS feed, even though the post in question was deleted, it showed up on my Google home page.

Whether the spoiler is true or not, the person who posted it is pathetic: a little bully whining, "it's just a children's book," as though that could make his actions appear less childish (rather than more.) I'm sure that if banned, he'd just scrape up another $5 so he could continue shitting on us all.

You're full of shit reklaw.

You didn't post it because it's funny. You posted it because you get some perverse fucking enjoyment out of seeing something ruined for other people.

It doesn't matter that it's a goddamned kids book or that it "always" happens. You view it in the same fucking way as all of the other spoilering shitheads view it.

As a chance to kick down someone elses sandcastle, to ruin an event, experience, frivolous moment for some anonymous person over the internet.

It's another chance to collect a pissed off person for your malformed wall of fucking shame. For some fucked reason, that's your interaction currency.

Well you know what? You're just a profound cockboat. Regardless of how you view this type of interaction, we're real fucking people. If you'd do this in real life, well that's one thing. But you don't.

You've got the veil of anonymity so it becomes funny to you. Ho Ho, people on the internet hate me, how jolly amusing.

Well you know what? Fuck you. Fuck you and your fucking funny spoilers, true or not. Fuck you and your wall of shame, wall of hatred, whatever the fuck you get your stupid jollies off collecting.

It's not funny in the real world, and it's not funny here.

There is no way to interpret your post as anything other than willful, mean-spirited baiting, no matter what "oh but I thought the idea was funny" post-hoc you try to throw on it.

Protip: if you think something is funny, but it's also really fucking obvious that it's going to upset a bunch of people, don't make a two-word post out of it.

All that aside from the fact that it was a single link to a ytmnd. What, you couldn't you find a suitable article in The Onion? The generous interpretation of your post was that it was shit unsuitable for the front page, and that's not a great sign.

Reklaw, you are a gigantic douche. You make the internet suck more by participating in it. You are the kind of person that the $5 donation is supposed to weed out - but the metric tonnage of your suck is such that it actually overcame this barrier to shit all over this website.
I hate Harry Potter - I think the books are contrived and silly. I'm profoundly frustrated that anyone gets excited about them when Phillip Pullman's work exists. However - ruining the endings of things for people is like the hallmark of gigantic assholes.

It's almost cliche - what makes an asshole? The person who ruins the endings of books and movies.

Whether or not your response is appropriate, you'll probably be told you're overreacting; there are a lot of people who dismiss the HP series as pedestrian and so any interest you express will expose yourself as an unwashed peon. Moreover, reacting at all in a public forum is exactly what feeds the mentality that leads to these posts in the first place. Case in point, that reklaw decided to use this thread to respoil it.

Which isn't to say you shouldn't make these posts. Reklaw is pretty clearly a chronic asshat, and this type of incident just reinforces that it's intentional trolling rather than simply having an unpopular opinion. And if there's any lingering doubt, respoiling it in a comment here has to eliminate it.

It's not meant as an insult. I don't particularly give a shit what you think.

Nothing I type, nothing I write will change your attitude, it was more of a cathartic venting for my personal use, as well as for community enjoyment.

I know people like you. Hell, I've built products specifically FOR people like you. It's a common behavior. You're a specific personality type It's not unique, witty or anything positive. It doesn't make you popular, better looking, or self actualized. It just means you're yet another in a long-line of internet shitheads.

I don't care if you're upset or not upset or if you rate my rants.

I'm more focused to pointing out to other members of the community that you offer exactly nothing of worth to this organization and group. You don't bring anything interesting, funny, profound, or hell, even bland to the table.

You're just some fuckhead on the internet who gets his kicks playing ye-olde-strongman. It's fun to denigrate others, and you get that shit in spades here.

Another vote for application of the banhammer. There is nothing here that is not a dick move by a user with a history of dick moves.

I'm also unsure how to properly object to the "but it's probably not true!" without tacitly confirming or denying the posted spoiler, so I will settle for saying that it doesn't matter whether it's untrue or not. A shitty post was made by a shitty user for shitty reasons. And then he continues to be shitty when, surprise(!), people don't like him or his shitty post!

If it's a fake spoiler, why is it funny? Does it have any purpose other than to incite flame outs? Are you really just collecting negative comments for your profile page? That's an odd hobby but I guess "To each his own" applies there.

But it's an incredibly minor, probably fake spoiler. That's why it's funny, you see.

See, that's the thing about spoilers. Idiots who don't understand why spoilers suck think that the only problem with a spoiler is that it "ruins the surprise", and then they say that if the surprise is the only thing you like about the thing in question then, well, it must be pretty shitty in the first place. But that's bollocks. Being told that something will happen at some point in the future of the narrative completely skews how you look at everything else; no matter how much you don't want to.

If you're told that a character dies, then you look at that character in a completely different way. If you're told that an object will play a hugely important role you can't stop looking at that object. The pacing, the narrative beats, the characterisation, the dialogue - everything that makes a good story a good story, and that skilled storytellers strive to achieve, get completely knocked out of whack.

So it doesn't matter if the spoiler's true or not; it doesn't matter if it isn't, in your opinion, "major"; it doesn't matter if it's spoiling "the surprise" or not. It makes it harder to enjoy the story in the way the story was supposed to be enjoyed. And it makes you, the spoiler-flinger, a vast, worthless jizznozzle who should be banned as hard as the admins can possibly manage.
