filter.metafilter.com/politics
filter.metafilter.com/entertainment
filter.metafilter.com/culture

There are many ways in which I'm glad MF is different from Slashdot, but I think that's something they did right: the ability to post to specialized subsections would allow people interested in Gonzalesfilter or iPhonefilter or whatever to "take it to the ___" (dark red?), and would allow the mods to be strict about FPP quality with less MeTa blowback.

It could be made clear that the Blue is only for interesting, comprehensive content that will probably elicit constructive discussion.

I like ReadMe, but I think that you can get away with doing everything under the cultural umbrella. Books/Movies/Television/Games, etc. Sort of "What I'm Consuming Now" discussion filter. The ultimate failure of most of the internet, and the success of Metafilter, is that you fucking hate talking about movies and shows on other sites. Which is unfortunate. I guess I sort of imagined read.metafilter.com as a place to post links to cool texts online. Stuff that people can read/consume in a shortish amount of time, then talk about afterwards. The difference from places like ilx.com or "What I'm Consuming Now" being the texts are available along with the discussion. For example, the first thing I'd post would be Gitanjali (with a little side note about Get On Jolly.)

A review site would be nifty, though I'm afraid it'd turn into a stage for "your favorite book/movie/music sucks" commentary.

I rather think that this should be the tagline for a review site: "Your favorite X sucks." But I also don't think a review site is the right fit for metafilter. We're not going to beat amazon's reviews and recommendations feature.

I would love to see some sort of personals.metafilter.com (green text on a yellow background, for readability) but only because I can't wait for the first breakup to come to MetaTalk.

Metafildada: this is a subsite that throws up ideas so that they can be shot down; every member is a little playwright, who invents different subjects and who, instead of situating suitable comments on the level of his own intelligence, like chrysalises on chairs, tries to find causes or objects (according to whichever psychoanalytic method he practices) to give weight to his plot, a talking and self-defining story.

Every member is a plotter, if he tries to explain a word (to know!) From his padded refuge of serpentine intartubes, he allows his instincts to be manipulated. Whence the sorrows of community life.

To be plain: The amusement of redbellies in the mills of empty skulls.

METAFILDADA DOES NOT MEAN ANYTHING.

If we consider it futile, we don't waste our time over a colour that doesn't mean anything.

gaming.metafilter.com where when we run out of witty banter, we can just battle each other in virtual gin rummy, acrophobia and trivial pursuit. White like a Wii? Some bright, obnoxious color that indicates fun?

live.metafilter.com that takes the dynamic of the IRC channel and replicates the real-time angst of the chat boards us old tyme geeks know and love with the people we love to see flame out. Drama queen pink or psybersex red

secondlife.metafilter.com - where we have to create virtual avatars and wander aimlessly to ask each other the same things we always do, but with 8 times the lag time and a completely nonintuitive interface. 3D and the color of *the future!*

MUD.metafilter.com - all the same interaction as regular metafilter, but this time we "have" swords, and gold pieces and instead of pissing on a thread, someone can stab us and take all our equipment while we're off getting a sandwich. You know, in ASCII text - the color of a WYSE terminal

enablers.metafilter.com - just like ask.me, except we would only be allowed to repeat the answer the questioner wanted to hear, rather than an actual answer. "He'll change. Marry him anyway." And, "Don't waste your money on a lawyer. You can figure this out with a Nolo press book" Brownnose brown?

posted by kirkaracha at 6:24 AM on July 30, 2007

notthesameconstantbarrageofshitfilter

Its colors would be black letters on a white (or slightly off-white) background. Plain text.

Declare certain topics and words off limits, perhaps not permanently, but until stated otherwise. Like avoiding doubles, but more generalized.

For instance, no posts about Harry Potter, positive or negative, at all. No Tolkien. No Escher. No Bukowski. No computer games. No Apple Computer or any of its products. No discussions of intellectual property rights (copyrights, trademarks, etc.). No United States politics. No Christopher Walken. No youtubes of young musical prodigies. No comic books. No movies based on comic books. No Christianity. No urban exploring or cool derelict buildings. And so on.

And ban anything generally considered to be a "meme" by the sort of people who use the word, and ban the word "meme" itself. Ban "arguably" and "wow. just wow." and all internet acronyms and too many other words and phrases to bother mentioning in this example.

Let members suggest and vote on things to add to or remove from the black list, but let the administrator decide. If you don't like it, you can start your own notthesameconstantbarrageofshitfilter.

Check the list of latest additions when you log in. If you accidentally (?) post on anything banned, you are timed out or banned and everyone gets email explaining who was banned, why you were banned, and how funny your genitalia are. Do it per topic. Your first slip on Christianity, for example, gets you a week. Your second on Christianity gets you a month. Your third gets you eternity. If you mention one of the banned things in your comments, it is deleted (and you can get a time-out or ban for repeated mentions).

Declare certain posts or comments as having finished a topic or word. If people want to know when and why a certain topic or word was banned, they can click the link in the list of the banned.

If too many people join, start picking people to eliminate. Try to pick them from people who don't comment enough (least frequent 5 percent) and people who comment too much (most frequent 5 percent). And when I say eliminate them, I mean have them killed. Be sure to gather sufficient personal data when people sign up.

I would make a section that is kind of like projects, but more like instructables. This way you could collect some weird and crazy field guides by seasoned veterans wrt various creative/productive/technical hobbies. To me projects seems very oriented towards the digital medium, if it cannot be contained in a website or whatever it's kind of out of bounds.

Of course the section would be white, like the pure driven snow that is the plaintext theme. Or some thick rhizomorphic strands reaching for the sky. Something like that.

Also a "Nuked" subsection which would only consist of deleted posts overlayed with a flash "hit the monkey" type interface. The owner of the deleted post would be animated like Sisyphus, and we would all compete to see who could hit them with the most tomatoes and we would laugh as they rolled back down the hill over and over and over. If you got them down long enough they would be mangled by Cerberus and could be timed out for a day or more, depending on the extent of the injuries.

Every post and comment consists of one or more textless images*. Unique icons are used instead of usernames. We could live without dates and times, but I guess a picture of an clock could be used to indicate time if deemed absolutely necessary. Background is black.

*Images with text would be deleted, as would those things where you get a phrase by connecting the names of the things in pictures, or any another attempts to sneak language in.

Newsfilter.metafilter.com, with its distinctive deep "infected piss yellow" color.

hey LarryC, since you mention it daily, i'm slowy starting to get the impression that you don't like newsfilter or political posts, but i'm confused by your incessant need to talk about your dislike of politics on the site. it seems to be at once your bane and your raison d'etre.

if you're the "always bitching about politics on the site" guy and then the politics go away, as is your professed desire, what becomes of you? i predict you'll vanish in a puff of logic.

Oh, we also need a ban lottery.

It's like a 50,000 person game of online russian roulette. Who wouldn't want to play?

Ooo, wait!

jessamyn.hates.metafilter.com
cortex.hates.metafilter.com
mathowie.hates.metafilter.com

Each would have only those posts and comments that each moderator winked out of existence.

And each background would be red.

snarkweek.metafilter.com

Each year we'd count down to Snark Week, when this subsite would open. Then, we'd all dismiss the idea insisting that it's beneath us and calmly point out that those who comment in that section are nowhere near as smart as they think they are.

SnaWeMe would not have a background but insist that it's an expert on all subjects. It would look just like MeTa.

Ooh, moratorium.metafilter.com. Though we'd have to close it down as soon as it was built.

How 'bout a special section for me and Wendell: lame.metafilter.com. We can laugh at each other and leave the grownups alone.

teleskiving: please make it, I want to join very much. I would only suggest that the morans who insist on spamming goatse, LOLcat, etc, get shown the door very fast.

It would need really tough moderation, maybe even admin approval for contributions from new IPs. I don't have nearly enough time right now but I would be thrilled if someone made it happen.

SwapMe would be awesome, especially since Yankee Magazine has really dropped the ball on that service. Swap only, no cash transactions (except maybe for uneven postage). No faciliating: swap at your own risk. Our own little FreeBay. Could even arrange housing/vacation swaps there. Hm.

As much as I am into self-effacing humor, Deej, you are now truly lamer than I am.

But since there is a significant segment of the MeFi population who don't like funny comments, even those of Lore-grade quality, maybe a separate section dedicated to NOT TAKING ANYTHING SERIOUSLY, linking back to the serious topics (even at AskMe where jokes are banned) and including scoring from ROFLMAO to LOL to LAME.

Don't know how to make a subdomain for it, but it'd be MakeMeFiLaugh.

It's been around and "out" for a few weeks now, actually. Though the temptation to mislead you with an elaborate lie in wherein either it has been there for years or it was created just today as your reward for winning the Random Pony Raffle is considerable. Alas, alas.

A lot of people lie in wait for Anonymous AskMes. Why not AnonyMe? An entire site of juicy, squicky, uncomfortable sexual confessions, medical problems, and interpersonal situations.

travel.metafilter.com

Man, that'd be awesome.

Where the shit did that come from? Is it just extrapolated from travel-related AskMes? Or do we get a whole new shebang?
posted by Devils Rancher at 5:32 PM on July 30, 2007

A whole pile of existing travel-related questions were imported into the alpha Travel setup, so most of that content is in fact old and pre-Travel, but it's also functional for people that want to try using it. When it's less alpha, we'll be doing some fairly tight integration with the green to help travel stuff hit travel with decent visibility.

I want to say there was a more formal "hey we're working on Travel" thread aside from the podcast mention, but I can't find the link at the moment.

I'm just grinning at the fact that obviously someone had the same idea and thought it was good. The random pony award is just a bonus.

RedLightfilter, for sophisticated (because of course that's the only kind mefites enjoy) porn, obviously with red background.

EatMe and DateMe are both intriguing ideas.

Anonyme and Limerickfilter have my immediate vote, if I get one!

Whoa, I was about to suggest travelfilter too, and then TADA - it's there.

socialchange.metafilter.com - post ideas and resources on making the world a better place. Or maybe a Metafilter Fund of sorts.

shopping.metafilter.com - for mefites to sell their wares.
