If you could found a new Metafilter subsite, what would you start, and, for fun, what color would it be (e.g., "the green")?
This post was deleted for the following reason: Poster's Request -- loup
gossip.metafilter.com. And I'm sure you know what color it would be (check my profile for a hint).

filter.metafilter.com/politics
filter.metafilter.com/entertainment
filter.metafilter.com/culture
...etc.
There are many ways in which I'm glad MF is different from Slashdot, but I think that's something they did right: the ability to post to specialized subsections would allow people interested in Gonzalesfilter or iPhonefilter or whatever to "take it to the ___" (dark red?), and would allow the mods to be strict about FPP quality with less MeTa blowback.
It could be made clear that the Blue is only for interesting, comprehensive content that will probably elicit constructive discussion.

I like ReadMe, but I think that you can get away with doing everything under the cultural umbrella. Books/Movies/Television/Games, etc. Sort of "What I'm Consuming Now" discussion filter. The ultimate failure of most of the internet, and the success of Metafilter, is that you fucking hate talking about movies and shows on other sites. Which is unfortunate. I'd love to have a Whedonesque for you know, everything else.

I guess I sort of imagined read.metafilter.com as a place to post links to cool texts online. Stuff that people can read/consume in a shortish amount of time, then talk about afterwards. The difference from places like ilx.com or "What I'm Consuming Now" being the texts are available along with the discussion. For example, the first thing I'd post would be Gitanjali (with a little side note about Get On Jolly.)

I rather think that this should be the tagline for a review site: "Your favorite X sucks." But I also don't think a review site is the right fit for metafilter. We're not going to beat amazon's reviews and recommendations feature.
I would love to see some sort of personals.metafilter.com (green text on a yellow background, for readability) but only because I can't wait for the first breakup to come to MetaTalk.

The problem with pretty much all of these suggestions is that they're all just about partitioning off a subject matter. As it is, subsites are for different functions, rather than subjects within those functions.

Metafildada: this is a subsite that throws up ideas so that they can be shot down; every member is a little playwright, who invents different subjects and who, instead of situating suitable comments on the level of his own intelligence, like chrysalises on chairs, tries to find causes or objects (according to whichever psychoanalytic method he practices) to give weight to his plot, a talking and self-defining story.
Every member is a plotter, if he tries to explain a word (to know!) From his padded refuge of serpentine intartubes, he allows his instincts to be manipulated. Whence the sorrows of community life.
To be plain: The amusement of redbellies in the mills of empty skulls.
METAFILDADA DOES NOT MEAN ANYTHING.
If we consider it futile, we don't waste our time over a colour that doesn't mean anything.

TrollMe : Blood red background. A virtual valhalla , for people who need to get laid and confuse that with caring about what someone said on the internet. Once every hour a contentious topic is sellected by the admin, and the members fight to the death over it. Last man standing wins a virtual Troll Crown ™.

Seriously, a food site compiling recipes and food-related topics would be a daily visit for me. Who the fuck cares what color it is (though I like orange).
And we should definitely have a subsite that consists purely of a large whiteboard upon which we are all scribbling and chattering and erasing madly.

Its colors would be black letters on a white (or slightly off-white) background. Plain text.
Declare certain topics and words off limits, perhaps not permanently, but until stated otherwise. Like avoiding doubles, but more generalized.
For instance, no posts about Harry Potter, positive or negative, at all. No Tolkien. No Escher. No Bukowski. No computer games. No Apple Computer or any of its products. No discussions of intellectual property rights (copyrights, trademarks, etc.). No United States politics. No Christopher Walken. No youtubes of young musical prodigies. No comic books. No movies based on comic books. No Christianity. No urban exploring or cool derelict buildings. And so on.
And ban anything generally considered to be a "meme" by the sort of people who use the word, and ban the word "meme" itself. Ban "arguably" and "wow. just wow." and all internet acronyms and too many other words and phrases to bother mentioning in this example.
Let members suggest and vote on things to add to or remove from the black list, but let the administrator decide. If you don't like it, you can start your own notthesameconstantbarrageofshitfilter.
Check the list of latest additions when you log in. If you accidentally (?) post on anything banned, you are timed out or banned and everyone gets email explaining who was banned, why you were banned, and how funny your genitalia are. Do it per topic. Your first slip on Christianity, for example, gets you a week. Your second on Christianity gets you a month. Your third gets you eternity. If you mention one of the banned things in your comments, it is deleted (and you can get a time-out or ban for repeated mentions).
Declare certain posts or comments as having finished a topic or word. If people want to know when and why a certain topic or word was banned, they can click the link in the list of the banned.
If too many people join, start picking people to eliminate. Try to pick them from people who don't comment enough (least frequent 5 percent) and people who comment too much (most frequent 5 percent). And when I say eliminate them, I mean have them killed. Be sure to gather sufficient personal data when people sign up.

I would make a section that is kind of like projects, but more like instructables. This way you could collect some weird and crazy field guides by seasoned veterans wrt various creative/productive/technical hobbies. To me projects seems very oriented towards the digital medium, if it cannot be contained in a website or whatever it's kind of out of bounds.
Of course the section would be white, like the pure driven snow that is the plaintext theme. Or some thick rhizomorphic strands reaching for the sky. Something like that.
Also a "Nuked" subsection which would only consist of deleted posts overlayed with a flash "hit the monkey" type interface. The owner of the deleted post would be animated like Sisyphus, and we would all compete to see who could hit them with the most tomatoes and we would laugh as they rolled back down the hill over and over and over. If you got them down long enough they would be mangled by Cerberus and could be timed out for a day or more, depending on the extent of the injuries.

A whole pile of existing travel-related questions were imported into the alpha Travel setup, so most of that content is in fact old and pre-Travel, but it's also functional for people that want to try using it. When it's less alpha, we'll be doing some fairly tight integration with the green to help travel stuff hit travel with decent visibility.
