SWIMMERS UNITE? I was looking over at the side and see that MeTrain is one sport short of a triathalon. We wouldn't really want to start till September to make it a full month, most likely, but is there any interest?

There's a swimming option on weendure, so I guess just join the group and note your swims?
posted by mathowie (staff) at 9:53 AM on August 12, 2007

I don't think distances are really comparable across cycling and swimming, so if anyone else was interested, I would rather make a swimming group there that was all swim. Or am I misinterpreting your suggestion?

Click the "swimming" tab about halfway down this page:
http://weendure.com/group/metafilter

It tracks your swim distance and times that members report. So I'd say join the group, start tracking your swims and we may just move all three to there (since the nike+ running thing kind of requires an ipod and stuff) in the future.

Swimming? Sounds like it involves effort. How about a beer-drinking contest instead? Although...we would get to see mefi chicks in bikinis...maybe an ogling competition...

Really inappropriate derail, people.

I wish I had easier access to a swimming pool- this sounds like fun!

So we could have a dusty little swimming annex attached to your robust cycling page? As nice as that offer is . . .

I'd like to have a swimming challenge for swimming if enough people are intersted (they may not be, but it's Sunday so I'll hold out hope a little longer). But I would like it to be about swimming and not a dingy add-on.
posted by dame at 11:31 AM on August 12, 2007

I'd be up for it.
posted by grouse at 11:35 AM on August 12, 2007

dame, it's not a dingy add-on. There's a group specifically for metafilter activities on a site that tracks our distance and times for exercise, and everyone that's a member there can participate. The "cycling" part is on equal levels with running and swimming there. I mentioned it because you'd already have a critical mass of users, the tools are there, and people are asking for a swimming challenge.

It could be as easy as saying "hey, we're announcing a swimming challenge, go here and track your swims" and be done with it. If you want to find a different site and create a group and track swims feel free, I was just trying to share the easiest path to getting a challenge out there.

No sane distance swimmer wears a bikini, keep your HURF DURF BOOBIEZ talk elsewhere please.

I'd be in, though I'm actually okay with the dusty swimming annex if the run/bike are also going to be there.

I'm in. I can't tell from the Weendure site... is there any differentiation between pool and open-water swims?

I'll participate if there is a cannonball or most painful bellyflop category.

That bikini derail was totally inappropriate. Now about this drinking competition?
posted by nowonmai at 12:28 PM on August 12, 2007

The homepage has a bike on it, FFS. You are a cyclist not a swimmer. How can one even look at it and think you are going to treat swimming equally? More to the point, how is most active even calibrated? Is it just going to be time or distance? Because if so it is going to be inherently cyclists. So what is in it for me that I couldn't get better by even just starting a group that was MeFi swimmers and about swimming, which, triathletes nonwithstanding is actually, you know, a different sport?

Also, "helping" is not jumping in and saying, "Nice idea: let me make it secondary to something I already did."
posted by dame at 12:37 PM on August 12, 2007

I would participate in this if it existed.

"helping" is not jumping in and saying, "Nice idea: let me make it secondary to something I already did."

"helping" is also not being defeatist about a perfectly fine idea and putting words into other people's textareas. I actually clicked on the link mathowie provided, and noticed that the swimming groups get their own logo (a swimmer!). We Endure is a site that helps groups of people track stats in their exercising endeavors. It is a good venue to host what you are looking for; the fact that other MeFites are already there isn't an insult to your idea. This is an insult to your idea: who swims anymore, jeez?

It is set up as a cycling group, right now, yes? The "most active" leaderboard, for instance, doesn't seem to differentiate between sports, leading it to be cycling dominated, no?

I am not against using we endure, but I don't want to just be a tab in some group about some sport I could give a flying fuck about. He did not and has not addressed any of my concerns, instead being like, well, it was easier to stick you in this corner. What is hard to understand about this? That I am as insulted as I am? I don't know what to tell you about that: people get weird about different shit, huh?
posted by dame at 2:04 PM on August 12, 2007

I understand how insulted you are; it is very clear in your tone and text. It is indeed weird, the volume and extent of your pain. From my perspective, it is the expression of that feeling in this context that is baffling. I do not see it as conducive towards your goals to be as upset as you are in this forum.

Which is not to say that you should not be upset. That is your matter, and I leave it to you. But bringing that here, now, with your goal of getting a MeFi swimming group going, does not make sense to me. Could you clarify?
posted by Gunner's Mate 1st Class Phillip Asshole at 2:11 PM on August 12, 2007

Nevermind about clarification. I think my point is that you should <monty python>GET ON WITH IT</monty python> in regards to organizing a swimming group and leave this insult business aside, or in email.
posted by Gunner's Mate 1st Class Phillip Asshole at 2:17 PM on August 12, 2007

Why not just change the We Endure group so there's no primary activity? It looks like "Most Active" is determined by time spent, so all three sports would be equal. Apparently a little bicycle icon can be extremely upsetting.
posted by stopgap at 3:04 PM on August 12, 2007

dame, you can create your own group at WeEndure just for swimmers.
posted by hydrophonic at 3:33 PM on August 12, 2007

Right. Which is what I was thinking might be an option. I just want this to be as real as the others and not a half-assed add-on, lost amidst a wholly unrelated challenge. I'm sorry I was a jerk in the way I went about expressing it.
posted by dame at 5:00 PM on August 12, 2007

metafilter needs this like dame needs a bicycle.

I don't swim, bike, or run, but I think the swim challenge thing is a great plan...

Dame, if you think that joining the swim section on the MeFi WeEndure thing is going to make you "lost amidst a wholly unrelated challenge" then by all means make your group somewhere else. Just don't be too surprised when all the people who are already on WeEndure wanting the swim section to start a challenge don't join you.

This idea would be way better if it had been thought up by someone who thought of more than just themselves.
posted by DMan at 8:23 PM on August 12, 2007

I'm already swimming so if I could join in tracking my (pathetic) distances somewhere that sounds motivating and fun.

I don't mind joining in the already established group at we endure at all.

If it is cool with people tracking their swimming distances only there then I think I might just join in anyway.

It gives you a list of everyone and their distances when you clicky on the tab, and I don't care that the logo is a bicycle.
posted by gomichild at 9:15 PM on August 12, 2007

Over on the we endure group, I removed the cycling icon (by saying it was for all three sports) and added text saying it's for running and swimming too.

The homepage just tracks time spent doing whatever activity you've done, and each individual tab tracks distance and time.

I'm a swimmer, too. Just joined the we endure site. But I basically go only once or twice a week and swim the same distance, so my Activities page will be very boring.

I think there should be a challenge involving participants seeing how far they can run over a bed of coals.

This is probably why I'm not in charge of such things.
