Where were you when the bomb went off? August 13, 2007 8:04 AM   Subscribe

Meatbomb the West Coast! LA stizz, yo. August 23 (er so— road trips itineraries are notoriously hard to get spot), the esteemed will be out in LA with his lovely (who apparently we apparently put a guilt headlock on about the Pacific, scummy and salty). Since me an' the Hodg are the two points on this, and since we've only been here two months (each of us! Wild!), we'll be looking for places what where to doing this. Come follow inside, all!

I say somewhere on the West Side, but that's because a) I know other MeFites are over here, and b) I don't like driving. Hodg is some sorta Encino man though, or something...

Meatbomb, are you going to need a place to crash?

You know it happens every time. They're a good kid all their lives, and then as soon as they move out to L.A. they get hopped up on goofballs and start making MetaTalk posts that sound like they were written by a Nigerian businessman. We as a website have got to figure out a way to prevent our children from moving off to the godforsaken big city. More county fairs?

A Thursday? Yeah, I could probably do that.

I'm pretty sure Meatbomb is driving from Erie to Chicago today so is unlikely to check in here until later. fwiw.

Yo klangsterson: I remember you being suave and articulate not more than a couple months ago. Is the L.A. air that bad for you?
posted by ardgedee at 11:09 AM on August 13, 2007

The air coming out of the goofball pipe is.

ps - I was in 4H. I remember doing a project on some aspect of farming or animal life that was very well-received amongst my fellow members. Goofball free for going on 30 years!

Aside from being mildly wary of klangklangston now (nods soothingly, looks for exit), I would be thrilled to be a part of the LA Meatbombing.

Still hoping to see Meatbomb in DC, but as I'll be in LA from the 20th to the 24th (work + scouting for my upcoming permanent move there!), why not seize the opportunity when it presents itself? I'd love to meet some LA folks too.

Only place I know to suggest is the Short Stop on Sunset near Dodger Stadium. I'm staying near Barnsdall Art Park, and I'd prefer not to go too far west, but I will if need be.

Dudes, we are so there, can't wait to see all you good people.

If there are places to crash, that is an extra bonus. If there are special herbal diet supplements, that will make me cum, because I am very up for the full Californian clean living experience I have heard so much about. In fact, just typing the words "herbal diet supplements" is getting me a little bit hard. But hey, enough about my erection, right?

Obviously I have no fucking clue where this thing should happen, but wherever it is I am totally there, with my excellent woman.

I will be there. Oh, yes, yes I will.
posted by jmhodges at 7:11 PM on August 13, 2007

Oh, and Encino is, indeed, my place (hey, its close to work, okay?). Meat, you could crash at my place. I could give up my queen sized bed for the evening.

There is pretty much zero choices for places to hang around my part of town. Those looking to get hooked up with some massage therapists will find them aplenty, however. Don't expect me to help.

Safari Sam's down on Sunset seems an alright place, but I've only been there once and that was during Bootie LA, the pirate-themed mashup night. Suggestions?

Also, goofballs are delicious.

I'd love to finally hit a MeFi meetup, with the bonus that I think I'll actually be in town!

Safari Sam's night be nice, or we could take over the biergarten at the Red Lion!

Hey, it looks like this didn't get into the meetup list. Should we create a new thread with the Add Meetup or just get an admin to hack us up a fix?
posted by jmhodges at 7:12 PM on August 14, 2007

The Red Lion is just a couple minutes away from me (it's in Silver Lake, I'm in Los Feliz) and is awesome, so visualise me doing a thumbs up-kind of thing regarding that destination.
posted by the_bone at 8:03 PM on August 14, 2007

I'm okay with Red Lion, as long as no one as any strong objections.

posted by mzurer at 12:20 PM on August 15, 2007

Since it's on a Thursday, and maybe some people from the west side would wanna come, I propose something like 7?
posted by starscream at 4:56 PM on August 15, 2007

Getting from the Westside to Silver Lake by 7:00 on a weeknight could take more than an hour, which might make some people a no-go (me, for one).

Oof! I was looking at September... I'll be coming from The Valley if at all, and chances go up if it's near my home, which is near Klang's, which is near Culver City. On the other hand the last one was a mile from my house, and I didn't make it, so I would not make any plans based on me, if I were you.

Scody (et al.), what would be a better time? 8? 9?
posted by speicus at 12:11 AM on August 16, 2007

8:00 would give me a better chance to make it, though with my orgy of book deadlines these days, I'm still not a guarantee. 7:00 would be totally out (I don't leave work till 6 or 6:30 most nights).
posted by scody at 2:32 PM on August 16, 2007

I am so sad to have missed this - since Monday I've been having really bad dizziness, it comes and goes, but I can't walk in a straight line, and I probably shouldn't drive. I actually drove down to The Red Lion tonight, but I shouldn't have; I realized that I was going to be acting too weird to meet new people, and that 'Hi, I know I seem drunk, but it's actually this weird balance thing' wasn't a great conversation starter, so I just drove back to my hotel. I need to head home tomorrow and go to the doctor. So sorry y'all, I hope I'm in LA for the next one, and I hope Meatbomb is still heading to DC next week.

I thought I did post those pictures to flickr, like, forever ago. I dunno. It's shitstorm central at work today (a designer's out sick, so I've gotta cover, and trying to figure out where people store their files and what stage they're at with their shit is a fucking nightmare), but I'll try to post 'em again, assuming there's power at home—we had a brownout/blackout last night.

Oh, wait... are these photos from the August 23, 2007 meetup? I've been populating the Photos metadata for past meetups where possible, (perhaps mistakenly) searching attendees' Flickr archives for EXIF dates that coincide with meetup dates. Those pics claim to have been shot on April 1, 2006... 'zat a previous Meetup, or just incorrect date/timestamping by your camera?
