At some point in each potential burning man attendee's life, he must come face to face with an awful truth: I will NEVER actually attend Burning Man.

I'm pretty sure I'm going.

i will be there. so will my friend, a long-time lurker Mefite whose user number is below 100. how might we find you?

Good question. I'll have a big picture of pancakes! So you'll just have to ask all of the people with big pictures of pancakes if they're me.

My first Mefi meetup and it's going to be at Burning Man, conveniently located a few feet from my camp! This sounds great.

I don't know about you, but this is where I bitch loudly about Burning Man while secretly wishing I had the time and/or money to attend.

Burning Man is for sellouts!

Next year maybe we'll get all the MeFi dorks without enough momentum to go on their own and make a big dork camp out of it. I haven't been since 2001 or so and would like to go again at some point.

Barring unforeseen circumstances, I'll see y'all there.

Every year I think I'm really going to go, I look at that $250 on my dresser and think, man, that's half the price of a good camera, why don't I use it for that instead?

salvia writes "Every year I think I'm really going to go, I look at that $250 on my dresser and think, man, that's half the price of a good camera, why don't I use it for that instead?"

Well to be fair, $250 is less than half the price of what you'd need to spend to do burning man right.

...and what are you going to do with half of a good camera?

jessamyn writes "Next year maybe we'll get all the MeFi dorks without enough momentum to go on their own and make a big dork camp out of it. "

This will certainly stand out, because lord knows there are no dorks at burning man!

Leaving the $250, or receiving?

Either way, it's still necrophilia.

I would so get off my ass and finally get around to going to burning man if there were a MetaFilter camp.

Well, maybe I would. I'm with jonson.

Yes, I have been to BRC many times and thought I would never go again, but would consider it, were there to be a MeFi camp. I still have like a dozen 10 gallon water jugs, several tubes of body paint, and desert goggles for everyone.

I love the idea of a real-life AskMe, we could paint ourselves in green and attach "favorites" to each other.

"I'm going to a place where it'll be 90 degrees during the day and 10 degrees at night. What should I pack?

"I recently read that Highway 50 in Nevada is the loneliest highway in America. How do they even measure this? What is the second loneliest highway?"

"What is the best way to attach two pieces of rebar to each other? Is there some kind of clamp I can buy? I have a lot of duct tape and twine -- will this work?"

"Dear Hive Mind: My gf has taken to walking around in the nude in public, through huge crowds of people. How can I become more accepting of this? Or am I right to feel totally jealous?"

"[ToughDecisionFilter]. I'm trying to decide between dropping acid and taking ecstasy. Which do you recommend?"

"How to quit my job? Some recent experiences have made me realize that I'm not living life to its fullest working here in this office. It's so boring I can't even concentrate. But I made a two-year commitment. How do I tell my boss?"

I'll be there and I'll try to find the meetup. Also, my camp will be making hydrogen filled soap bubbles for you all to blow up every night at midnight at 4:30 and esplanade.

pombe: yay, hydrogen economy!
posted by aubilenon at 11:47 AM on August 20, 2007

Glad you've seen the Hydrogen Economy before! This is my first year working on it, but we've made a lot of improvements to it - hopefully it will be cooler (hotter?) than ever.
posted by pombe at 12:43 PM on August 20, 2007

I'm looking forward to checking out hydrogen economy. I kept meaning to stop by last year and never got around to it. It was only while I was parked in the line to leave at the end of the week that I discovered what it was all about. Since we're practically neighbors this year, I'll have to come and visit.
posted by mullingitover at 8:54 AM on August 21, 2007

Man, if there were a Mefi Burning Man camp I would be SO VERY THERE.
posted by fuzzbean at 12:20 PM on August 21, 2007

Hey pombe, we'll be shakin' yer hydrogen economy on tuesday night then. I'll be over w/ our lil' artcar, the Unimog! Yee haw!!!!
posted by lannanh at 12:37 AM on August 22, 2007

We'll be giving out snowcones at 9 and Habitat to do our bit against global warming - stop by! Also, lannanh, I camped with the Space Cowboys in 2005 and rode that Unimog up and down the playa clinging to the rooftop - looks like Martha might be a better bet this year given the apparent high winds.

Burning MeFites! Alas, I will be busy slinging ice at Ice 9 with my beloved campmates (a couple of MeFites among them) during the time of the meetup.

BUT, I'd like to welcome Metafiltarians of all persuasions to drop by my camp, The Playa Security Agency at 8:30 and Estuary.

Look for all the signs, the laser maze, and the white dome on the corner. We'll be serving up Liquids of Mass Destruction at aBARgrahib and invite you as well to attend our Neighborhood Watch Party on Tuesday and our Luau in Space on Thursday.

Details on the parties and copies of our deliciously secure public service announcements can be found here.

If you want to find me ask for Agent Squeeze, Agent Papa Bear (I'm camp dad or, as I prefer, camp dada), or Mark. MeFites will get royal treatment after the required cavity search and DNA registration.

I'm leaving in 18 hours.

Out.

Heh heh. Well, that's mighty fine! You young folk run along and enjoy yourselves, now!

Next year maybe we'll get all the MeFi dorks without enough momentum to go on their own and make a big dork camp out of it.

Somehow, when I read this I didn't click that this wasn't going to be it's own event, Burning Matt, somewhere perhaps less daunting and more comfortable. I think that the MeFi community would have a lot to bring to a self-established festival. Dynamic interests, only a one-time, $5 entrance for those after the first 14.5K and, best of all, self policing!
