First comment was a stupid derail, but the discussion recovered from that pretty well. Or at least as well as a lot of Americans debating Cuba can get. Kind of late to be going to MeTa about it now.

Wow, that D.B. Cooper story is the best thread hijack ever! I especially thought it was cool that the stewardess lives right up the road from me and the writer met her at one of my wife's favorite restaurants. I agree it would be a great foundation for an FPP.

Chlorus' comments in other threads indicate a hard-on for Che. I mean, lets face it, Che was dashing and charismatic and looks fuckin great on a t-shirt. And t-shirts are obviously Chlorus' only exposure to the nuanced collective entity that is Cuba. So, you really can't blame him.

I interpret this in a similar way as I interpret homophobic comments. As in 'This person is obviously a repressed bottom.' Only this time with a geopolitical t-shirt iconography twist.

Y'know, about a year or so back I wrote a song about ol' Che. I'm going to take the liberty of posting it here:


The Day I Met Che Guevara

one fine and pleasant summer morning
with the song of the cicada in the air
i heard the voice of che guevara
from just behind a tree
and then i saw a ghostly version of him there
he said what's up with all these t-shirts
folks are wearing nowadays
i swear my face is plastered everywhere

he said i do not like the way
i've been appropriated
this is just consumerism
plain and unabated
my face is on the t-shirt
but my case remains unstated

i said esteemed senor guevara
i'm hearing what you say
i've often thought the same thing
i'm glad you've come to me today
if i could help you spread your message
please, che, tell me the way

he said that's right, my gringo friend, i've chosen you
to rekindle revolutionary spirit
and though smashing capitalism
might seem a distant dream
in fact we are surprisingly quite near it
i've got one simple instruction to give you now
and you'll know just what to do once you hear it

then he looked me in the eye, said listen carefully
for really not much longer can i stay
then i noticed that his ghostly form was fading
and his voice was sounding further away
then a sudden sharp crescendo
of cicadas chirp chirp chirping
blotted out what mister che had come to say

so he was gone back to the ghost world
and i just stood there
disappointed with the way the whole thing went
but after while i went right back to thinking
how i was gonna pay my next month's rent
then i went and bought a che guevara t-shirt
the most ironic fifteen bucks i ever spent

That documentary was pretty interesting. I just finished the first one, is Che heavily featured in the second part which is also about sustainable farming and the Cuban government's efforts to open up a free(ish) market to encourage people to grow their own food with very few imported resources?
