This place is new and seems very exciting.
posted by hermitosis at 7:39 AM on November 15, 2007

It's pretty small, right? Will it be able to handle the legions of Mefites that are sure to attend?

At any rate, I hope to be one of the horde. I always say that, and never make it, but since this is a Saturday it's more likely than usual.

OMG, a Central European Bar that is serving Doc Brown's Cel-Ray?! I am so there.

amro, I have been in touch with the owners, and I think it's going to be okay. At any given meetup, our legions seem to be between 5 and 20 people spread out over several hours, which shouldn't be too much of a strain that early in the evening.

Oh, a meetup for my birthday? That's really thoughtful of you guys, but it's not 'til May.

I'LL BE THERE!

Will be there mos def. I was starting to wonder if everyone decided to go into hibernation for the winter or something.
posted by kkokkodalk at 10:02 AM on November 15, 2007

Should be there, but could be a little late due to a family birthday lunch that will likely drag through the afternoon.

My two favourite things: MeFites and referees.

(Eh, I'll be in town in late April. Keep your calendars open.)

Pete Wentz and Ashlee Simpson will definitely be there. Definitely.

My birthday! Awww, you guys shouldn't. No really, you shouldn't because I can't be there. Stupid geography.
posted by deborah at 3:15 PM on November 15, 2007

...I just realized that for some reason I typed out "Foxy Boxing" like it was a proper noun...and I'm kind of sure it's not. Even if it is, let me just go on the record to say that I did not type it that way because I was being grammatically correct, but because I had a brain fart and for a split second was conflating foxy boxing with Foxy Brown.

I know I've said this for the last...I don't know...four NYC meetups, but I've put this in my calendar and I really am going to try to be there. The last few have sounded like so much fun.

P.S. - date has been fixed in the sidebar but not in the title field on this page.

Ha, I actually almost proposed a NYC meetup yesterday for the very same day (12/14).

So I may finally attend, though the menu at this place doesn't look very good.

I'm a vegetarian that doesn't drink or like sour things. So I'm basically down to a pretzel or a linzer torte.

ATTENTION:

*ahem*

So, I just spoke to the owner over at Katja. They're excited to have our party, and asked that I pass on the fact that they have another party coming in at 8:00.

This is fine, since usually after a couple of hours we move on (like locusts) to the next good time, but I want to suggest to you all that

A) We change the start time to 6:00, and
B) Please make an effort to be reasonably on time.

Their banquette seats about 16 and their bar about 8, so we should be fine for space. I'll do a roundup closer to the date so I can get a pretty clear look at what sort of troops we'll be invading with.

In the mean time, check out my Foxy Boxers

Sounds good! 6 p.m., Saturday December 15th. Be on time, or miss the party.

How stupid would I be to try to drive in from NJ? Is there parking around the bar? (I've only ever taken the train in.)
posted by amro at 10:42 AM on November 16, 2007

The correct answer to "How stupid would I be to try to drive in from NJ?" is always "Very, very stupid. What the hell are you smoking?"

Wow, brujita. I was previously unaware of Dondi's existence but now may need to upload a new user picture as a result. He officially goes on the list of people I bizarrely resemble (alongside such proud company as Alyssa Milano, Winona Ryder, and Speed Racer).

Huh, I've gotten Winona Ryder, too, but that's usually from people trying to flatter me. I get Moira Kelly much more frequently, especially from The Cutting Edge time period.
posted by piratebowling at 10:33 AM on November 17, 2007

I wish someone would say I resembled someone like Winona Ryder. I don't look much like anybody or anything (I'm looking at you, dude who asked me if I was an Eskimo), and the one time someone said I resembled anyone, they said I looked like the legendary Korean singer In Soon-Ee. But I think they just said that because she's Blasian too. But it's cool. Girlfriend is fierce, and she's an awesome singer and performer.

A fez should be worn all the time not just at meetups.

I'm looking at you, dude who asked me if I was an Eskimo...kkokkodalk, that reminds me of the Sherman Alexie poem where all sorts of people come up and ask if he's their nationality; I think it's " Because I Was in New York City Once and Have Since Become an Expert".

And I'm out - my grandmothers 85th bday celebration (yay!) was moved from a lunch to a dinner (boo!) which means I probably won't get to meet up with you folks unless I dash quickly over to Manitoba's and/or Katz's sometime later in the evening.

As such, is there any sort of consensus (or mandate from TPS/Hermitosis, given that it is their production) as to where the party will be headed post-all that Austrian goodness?
posted by langeNU at 1:10 PM on December 10, 2007

Hmmmmmmm..... let me confer with him and see if we can come up with a schedule. Otherwise, I'll send you my number.

When we leave Katja at 8 (as we must, since they have a party booked), let's go to Cake Shop on 152 Ludlow for, well, cake! And coffee and beer, etc. But mostly cake. Shouldn't be very crowded that early.

BEST of the wurst.

You should have seen the look on people's faces when the waitress explained to me how that one piece of wurst came stuffed with cheese and wrapped in bacon. It was like cats when they hear the can-opener.

This was my favorite meet-up in a long time. I'm really grateful to those who came and made my night. Also thanks to people for letting me nibble off of your plates.

Awesome meet-up!
Just to let everyone know, the picture of me cracking up was just after kkokkodalk explained to me what a "key party" is.

Can we go back there again? I want to order the violet cordial next time. (Every day I try to be more and more like hermitosis.)
posted by rmless at 9:41 PM on December 15, 2007

For a night as fucking cold as a witch's underwire, it was a pretty big group. I'd happily go back-- the management seemed thrilled to have us, and we could easily have fitted more people.

Okay, rmless, expect a full regaling of my father's redneck nuptials in the near future. In the meantime, the happy couple is registered at the Oriental Trading Company if you wish to send tidings.

So in New York would a key party be with apartment keys or metrocards?

I had a great time (Great organizing job, TPS/hmt'sis/stx'no), and I'm sorry I had to leave to early.

Topics of conversation included:

Key parties (as mentioned), prenups, gingerbread Brooklyn, Berlin, Rock Band/Guitar Hero, making your own pasta that's not called pasta (hint: use a plastic bag and scissors), a hat with discrete kitten ears (as shown), and a plate with a pretzel next to a banana (careful: not a banana).

JonMC and Cunning, it would have been good to catch up with you. And where were Amberglow and Dame?

And HIst, I tried to search for "heteroflexible cupcakes," but google came up empty. Is this something I should post anonymously to askMe?
posted by nobody at 2:13 PM on December 16, 2007

I find it so appropriate that I had to explain key parties since my outfit theme for the evening seemed to be "your alcoholic aunt who tells you inappropriate things in a drunken haze."

And hooray for mefite Blasians. Represent.
posted by kkokkodalk at 2:35 PM on December 16, 2007

Oh, but y'all are a pretty- and nice-lookin' bunch a mefites. Also pretty nice lookin. And the food at the place looked delicious.

We (SF Bay Area) had ours at a Belgian fry place (it would sound weird to say Belgian French fries). They were good too - but there weren't any bacon-wrapped, cheese-stuffed hotdogs. Maybe next time.
posted by rtha at 8:57 PM on December 16, 2007

Oh, nobody, don't waste an AskMe question. If you need help defining heteroflexible, I'm more than prepared to familiarize you with the concept.
