What are MeFites listening to? December 11, 2007 3:45 PM   Subscribe

We just added some Last.fm stuff to profile pages and tweaked the design a bit.

Last.fm just got the Twitter and Flickr treatment. So if you send what you're hearing to Last.fm, and you have your Last.fm username in your profile, your recent tracks will show up on your profile page. (Check out mathowie's profile to see it in action. He likes Laurie Berkner? haw haw!)

And of course, this means we can do fun stuff like Recently Listened Tracks by everyone and even Top Albums.

We also tweaked the profile pages a bit to accommodate the recent track lists. If you spot problems, post them here. (Metafilter's valuation just skyrocketed!)

In my defense, iScrobbler doesn't track my iPhone music plays, so I miss out on hours and hours of stuff. Also, I have a child who likes kid music and my library is the one we play her songs off.

Snazzy!

Now, to follow a longstanding tradition, I make you feel unappreciated by dreaming of things to add to it (but mollify the sting by wishing for something probably totally illegal in some countries): how cool would it be if we could actually listen to the tracks by clicking on 'em (ie the ones that LastFm allows you to), or even coolio-er, have a MeFi internet 'radio station' automagically playing an aggregation of the top MeFi tracks. Hell, the same thing for MeFi Music tracks, and a third station with a mix of the two. Also, a great big golden pony to worship! I AM MAD WITH IMAGINING INTERNET POTENTIAL!

stavros, if you click the track names, you'll get a flash player on last.fm's site with at least a preview. I also wanted previews inline, but as you can probably guess, last.fm is kind of in the business of driving people to their own site so their API doesn't offer it.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 4:15 PM on December 11, 2007

Actually, stav, Last.fm does support embedded stations. The Pirate Bay plans on integrating embedded stations into it's site, so I'm sure matt and pb and the gang could do something similar here, if they wanted to.

But I want you to know what it is! You've read my comments, now see what music I like. I'm a unique snowflake and you're sure to be impressed!

I guess what I'm trying to say is that even if Franklin Fucking Dee Roosevelt was user #666, I wouldn't care what kind of music he liked as long as his spelling was decent and his AskMe question history didn't suggest he was wicked mental.

I'm the type of person that can't have complex music playing when I'm really concentrating and coding and stuff. I only listen to the Boards of Canada if I have important crap to do. If I'm just answering email and browsing mefi, I can listen to Spoon or whatever, but when shit gets real, I have to have instrumentals (I listen to a lot of jazz too during those times).

One reason why this feature sucks is that it encourages people to post about how they have to do something about their recently played list because it's not hip enough or whatever. And to post about user x's lame play history in contentious threads about music. It contributes to crap comments about music preferences, is what I'm saying. I don't want to read bullshit debates about how "user x's most played is radiohead lol so what does he know about jazz?", nor do I want to hear about how some of you edit the music that you listen to in order to show the world how cool you are. Because of sites like Last.fm, listening to music, even on record in your own home, becomes a social, community activity rather than a personal private experience, and thus has become partially governed by social, community rules--including what it is cool or uncool to be listening to at any given moment. Thus, this feature helps to enable the cult of music as fashion while simultaneously representing another nudge for Metafilter towards Facebook-lite.

Mayor Curley, as good god damned usual, stands on the side of the right and true.

posted by Phire at 9:51 AM on December 12, 2007

I hate to say something as dull and obvious as this, but the aggregate face of mefi music preferences as seen in the Top Albums list is by its very nature not a fair commentary on the actual spectrum of music-listening habits of individual mefites. It could reasonably be renamed "Albums that have had at least a fair amount of popular success, and thus to which several mefites have listened", but that's kind of wordy.

The recent tracks listing is a lot more entertaining and schizophrenic, though even that tends to be dominated by whoever is currently running their mp3 player uninterrupted.

This concludes the joyless, curmudgeonly, probably unnecessary defense of the rich musical palette belied by our otherwise neat and shiny new aggregation toys.

Do you all mostly scrobble, or browse last.fm? It's not possible to assume what shows up here is representative of real musical tastes if what's recorded are our forays into new genres. Of course, the whitebread indierock makes it look like the former, but hey it could be the latter, right? Maybe I should check those albums out too...
