Chicago Meetup this February?

Previously: Free books, free cereal, new conscripts, and sweet victory for Team 'Stache Gordon. Let's go again.

Details: I'm personally open to almost anything in the coming month, but I'm aware that this February (and its bumper crop of holidays secular and religious) could be a minefield for even the moderately scheduled. I'll designate the week from 2/18 to 2/24 as an arbitrary starting point, but I'm content to let the crowd decide. As to venue: last time we nominated the Michigan Ave. Billy Goat Tavern as an unofficial Official Meetup Location. Should we make it Officially Official for this outing?

Nice!

That span is great, particularly the 20th and 21st.

I could handle two meetups in one month. And so can you - drive up north for the Milwaukee meetup. We promise not to call you a FIB.

Any time after the 18th works perfectly for me. And as eamondaly was agitating for a meet-up over in metachat, I whole-heartedly support the endeavor (and the Billy Goat as official unofficial meetup spot).
posted by crush-onastick at 11:55 AM on January 31, 2008

That is so funny: I fired up my browser and came straight here specifically to start a meetup thread. I nominate February 20th.

I am tentatively up for this.

if I have money (things are very tight here right now) I will be there with bells on (provided I can get said bells out of hock)

What's wrong with weekends? I work way out in the burbs and I live in another burb. Getting into the city after work on a weekday evening (and then the hour-long drive home, when I have to work early the next day) is not my idea of fun.
posted by desjardins at 7:42 AM on February 1, 2008

In my experience, no-one shows up at weekend meet-ups (unless they are a special Hey! [insert celebrity member here]'s in Town!) Probably because it's easy to stop at a meet-up after work, but people are less inclined to do so on a weekend, when they're schedules are more free.

I don't think I have a free weekend from now until June.
posted by crush-onastick at 9:03 AM on February 1, 2008

oops. I mashed "they are more free" and "their schedules are looser" into a single aggravating error. Bad crush, no biscuit.
posted by crush-onastick at 9:04 AM on February 1, 2008

I would like to attend, but having a variable schedule I won't know until a day ot two before, if then. I can't do the 20th or 21st, but weeknights are usually as good as weekends for me.
posted by readery at 6:16 PM on February 1, 2008

I'm semi-new to town and would look favorably upon a meetup. 20th's better than the 21st, as long as we're tallying votes. Thanks, Iridic!
posted by sachinag at 7:49 PM on February 2, 2008

So, uh. I guess it's the 20th since that's what's in the sidebar?

I will try to be there.
posted by sparkletone at 8:12 AM on February 4, 2008

The 20th it is. Bring your dancin' shoes.
posted by eamondaly at 11:38 AM on February 4, 2008

Rockin'. Can't wait, and welcome to town, sachinag.

Eamon, if you've cut the mustache, can you bring the trimmings so we can all take turns wearing them?

I am in. Billy Goat's, right?
posted by ztdavis at 8:18 PM on February 4, 2008

what time, now?
posted by jtron at 7:39 AM on February 5, 2008

People usually start showing up after 6:00ish and start going home after 11:00ish, right?
posted by crush-onastick at 9:10 AM on February 5, 2008

I'll try to be there! I have a dentist appointment that afternoon and was planning to head home after that. But I'll see if I can't drag my fiancé back downtown with me.

The weak leave around 11-ish, yes.

Who are you calling "weak"? oh wait, I resemble that remark. . . .

"2/07 Chicago Meetup"

The far-gate is completed and the crazy-glue is drying. Everyone come to my place at 6pm. Make sure you wear period-appropriate-clothing as we don't want to upset any of the primitive Chicago me-fi's from the year two-thousand-and-seven!

"What's wrong with weekends?"

We like each other in a, "Hey, I'll stop by after work" sort of way, but not in a, "Let me plan my weekend around it" type of deal...

What day was the last meetup on? I think I Wednesday. That seemed to work well I think.

Anyway, I'll be there.

The strong go on to see the be-cool stick.
posted by wfrgms at 6:59 PM on February 5, 2008

I guess I need to add metatalk to Google Reader so I don't go missing things like this.

I'll be there WITHOUT my damn non-sticking name tags. (We can sharpie directly onto our clothing.)
posted by iguanapolitico at 7:10 PM on February 5, 2008

I can come! Woot!

But now I want hamburgers :( I know what I'm getting for lunch.
posted by halonine at 7:33 AM on February 6, 2008

Yay meetup! It's been way too long since I've seen you people.

I will try to be there depending on weather.

(We can sharpie directly onto our clothing.)

Why not just write on our foreheads?

People with bangs (myself included) will just have to have their heads forcibly shaved...

I very much plan on coming!

Ah, crap - was looking forward to this but had something come up. Have a great time, and I'll look forward to pictures and the next go-round!!

How is everyone's week going so far? Can I get a woot for who is going to make it tomorrow night?

Also, round about what time do most of yall plan to commence with the festivities? As I don't plan on being requested to jump a dead car battery I should be able to make an appearance fairly early unlike last time.
posted by wfrgms at 10:34 AM on February 19, 2008

I expect to be there, unreasonably early, as I cannot cotton to hanging around my office after the partners leave.
posted by crush-onastick at 11:28 AM on February 19, 2008

Woot!

I'll be there at whatever time leaving Highland Park at ~4:40 gets me there. (Probably nearly 6, after parking etc.)
posted by iguanapolitico at 12:20 PM on February 19, 2008

I'm in, around 6-ish. Forecasts call for an 80% chance of drunkening.
posted by eamondaly at 1:04 PM on February 19, 2008

Quick recap:

We're getting together tomorrow, Wednesday, starting at 6:00 PM. The place is the Billy Goat Tavern (map), situated on Lower Michigan Avenue a little north of the river. To reach the tavern from the upper part of Michigan Ave., you'll want to descend via one of the convenient stairways scattered around the Wrigley Building.

Naturally, you can show up at any point in the evening and bring whomever you'd like. See you there!
posted by Iridic at 1:28 PM on February 19, 2008

I should be there at approximately the same later-than-6 time I was last time.
posted by sparkletone at 2:00 PM on February 19, 2008

Ugh. Windchills in the -20 to -30 range forecast for Wednesday night. With a scary, ALL CAPS National Weather Service advisory and everything.

Everyone wear hats and shit!

I'm going to work really hard today to crack 600 favorites.

That way I'll know I deserve those Meetup beers tonight.

I'm balking slightly now, as I just got a whole bunch of work to do. So if I don't show, don't call a cop. If I do show, it might be for a short time. And if I don't show, drink to me once or twice. :)
posted by iguanapolitico at 9:22 AM on February 20, 2008

I'm out. Too cold and I'm a puss.

Have fun, Chicago!

So if I don't show, don't call a cop.

We can't just taze you until you agree to come ourselves, can we?

Oh, right. We can.
posted by sparkletone at 12:22 PM on February 20, 2008

Aw, don't taze me bro.

It's looking like I'm a definite no-show tonight. Too much to suddenly do. Too much travel time. Too cold.

Drink and be merry!

All I have to say is that the view from the women's room at the Hancock is worth the risk.

Oh the drunkening. And then the Bloodening. I think I left articles of clothing behind at the top o' the 'cock.

Yeah, I lost my super toasty scarf. Boooooooooooo.

Sorry for the hasty departure: the 147 is an elusive beast, and I couldn't afford to miss it. After such a crappy weekend, last night was exactly what I needed. Woot! Thanks, everyone!

Hey! Leave Tom alone! I thought he was very nice!

Mr. Tom Kranz is a communist and a lover of sheep. Which of these things do you support whole-heartedly?

Or do you support both?
posted by sparkletone at 2:15 PM on February 21, 2008

I too am sorry I had to leave early. I missed the women's room in the John Hancock lounge, the full drunkening and bloodening, and Tom Kranz. But I did catch up on much-needed sleep, and managed to barely finish my lesson plan.
posted by hydrophonic at 5:02 PM on February 21, 2008

I heard that Tom Kranz is secretly a nazi sympathizer. Or not so secretly, apparently.
posted by kpmcguire at 5:07 PM on February 21, 2008

I am extremely disappointed. In all of you. (Except that nice Tom Kranz boy. He's a straight-spined lad and a credit to his parents, and you could do a lot worse than follow his example.) You kids - with your exotic martinis, and your picture taking, and your lunar eclipses, and your fraternizing with the Irish...

[Sighs heavily. Shakes head.]

But Dad, Dad, I only drank the whiskey, just like you taught me!

(And Tom Kranz isn't that nice. He put the glass in Eamon's scone. I know he did).
