SXSW Austin meetup? February 21, 2008 1:58 PM   Subscribe

Although I'm not going to South by Southwest, maybe the SXSW visitors and the Austin natives could have a meetup? SXSW is March 7 -16 this year.

I am on a panel March 8th at 5pm, vaguely talking about "user revolts" and MetaFilter along with a bunch of other folks. I'm in town until the 12th. I'd love a meetup.

I'd be interested in a meetup, if it doesn't conflict with my movie-going that week.

What about Sunday, March 9, in the afternoon? Last year we met at Opal Devine's on 6th so maybe somewhere else this time.

"user revolts"

I'll say!

I'm not going to SXSW but I do live in Austin, and could probably make it. (Although I have said that about two past meetups without showing up.)

I want a talk on revolting users.

The Austin Bloggers group typically has a get-together the afternoon of SXSWi's first day, at the Mongolian BBQ joint right next to the convention center. I'll double-check the exact time and get back with that, but that would be a logical meetup opportunity.
posted by adamrice at 3:17 PM on February 21, 2008

that would be super-cool. I've never made it to a meetup in Seattle or Portland, but since I'll actually be in a central location.... (as opposed to the time (2001-ish?) I rode the bus from Lakewood to Seattle, ended up at the wrong place, and just came home again. somewhere I have a great pic of the closed sign from the restaurant that it was supposed to have been at. oh, my life pre-cellphone....)

Not going this year. :(

Opal Devine's is quite a hoof from the Convention Center, or at least was for me last year.

I'm in! Sunday afternoon would be fine, will be in town Friday through Tuesday afternoon.

I think Sunday March 9th in the afternoon would be great. Noon?

Brainstorming here: There are several mexican restaurants on South Lamar, but not within walking distance of downtown. The Cedar Door is a possibility, it's at 2nd and Brazos 1 block east of Congress. The Dog and Duck Pub at Guadalupe and 17th is quite a jaunt if you're ambitious enough to hoof it, but maybe that would get us away from some of the crowds. Both of these have food and an outdoor patio if the weather is nice. A lot of places have the propane heaters on the patio for chilly days.

Cab sharing is always an option for the SXSWers, or maybe some of the locals would offer rides from downtown.

Yay, I was heading over to MetaTalk specifically to see if someone had set this up. I'll see y'all there!
posted by lhall at 7:31 PM on February 21, 2008

I'll walk up to a mile or so, but I'm cabbing it no place. I'm staying somewhere north of downtown, so public transpo works for me as well. Noon sounds great. I would like a burrito.

Scholz Garten at 17th and San Jacinto is another cool option.

How 'bout the Gingerman (4th & LaVaca)? I can't really think of a Mexican place downtown that would serve as a good meetup spot (Manuel's, Iron Cactus, Las Manitas), but someone feel free to correct me.

Gingerman or Fados would be good choices in the warehouse district. Cedar Door is closer to Congress. I might stop by to point and laugh at the tourists wearing their sxsw badges.

If you all are stumbling home late at night sit down at Magnolia is very good. Quick take out try Torchy's for excellent tacos near Star Bar on west sixth. Taco Deli is excellent, but not yet downtown.

I'll be around for music. I get in on the 11th. Leave on the 17th

If this happens after the 9th, I'm totally down.
I had a good time meeting everyone last year.

I'll nearly certainly be there, where and whenever 'there' turns out to be.

OK. As mentioned earlier, there will be an Austin Bloggers meetup, Friday Mar 6th at 6:00 PM, at the Mongolian Barbecue at San Jacinto & Cesar Chavez (East 1st St).

Obviously this doesn't preclude another meetup, but y'all are welcome to join in the nerdery.

Instead of a meetup, can we have a rumble?

But meetups are neutral territory!
posted by popechunk at 5:58 PM on February 22, 2008

Well, a question... shoudl the meetup coincide with the blogger meetup, or no? I'm sure there's tons of overlap.
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 6:09 PM on February 22, 2008

Well, Friday evening's the start of Film, including the Twenty-One premiere, so I'd personally prefer another date.

(P.S. Will have own car, if needed for transporting.)

Lunch on Sunday works better for me than Friday evening.
posted by donajo at 8:26 AM on February 23, 2008

I don't think it should coincide with the other meeting. I'll be traveling on the Thursday and (from what I can see) panels don't start til 3:30 on Friday, so later is probably better than earlier.

I just spent a few hours downtown looking at different places for the Austin/SXSW meetup, and The Cedar Door seems like the best to me. I have reserved the biergarten area for Sunday March 9th, from 12 noon until 2:30 pm. I told them I expected about 20 people.

The Cedar Door has a pretty good menu, lots of different kinds of beers, and a full bar. It's well located at 2nd and Brazos about halfway between the convention center and Congress Ave. If the weather is nice, the biergarten is a covered patio. If the weather is nasty, they enclose the biergarten, turn on the heaters, and run food and drink specials. So, I think we are covered for most contingencies.

Location, menu, and other info is at the link above. I look forward to meeting all of you in person!!!

If the mods could add this Austin/SXSW meetup to the list of meetups, that would be great. Thanks!

I added it, but I think anyone can add meetups. Thanks for taking care of this Daddy-O.

...and you can pick up wristbands starting Sunday March 9th at noon near Cedar Door. What a crazy coinky-dink.

I'll be attending, and there will be accordion.

I'm one of those who will be in for music, but not interactive, and would be up for something between the 12th and 15th for a sxsw meetup 2: electric boogaloo.

Did anyone mention that daylight savings time is Sunday morning yet? Please make a note of it.

Upthread I mentioned a (separate) blogger meetup on Friday March 6. An astute observer might note that today is Thursday March 6. In fact, that meetup is tomorrow, Friday March 7, in case anyone is interested.

I am so, so, SO sad that I will be missing this, but in the interest of not infecting everyone with whatever Cough of Death I have, I will. :[

Huh. Do I put my money where my mouth is? I usually do the grocery shopping about then, but I've gotta get out and do some flyer-hanging anyway, so I just might make it.

This is my first attempt at uploading pictures to Flickr, but here they are. Let me know if there's a problem viewing them. I went to another "meetup" after this one, so I'm not in my right mind.

BTW, I just logged out for the first time, completely by accident, and could not get back in, thank God you can email yourself the password link again.

Hey, I'll be arriving on Tuesday. Anybody still gonna be there? We can have an auxillary meetup.

I have a wristband and will be downtown Wed-Sat evenings, chilmost. I'll buy you a beer if we cross paths.

Thanks, everybody! Also, Tulia TX, Shot in Bombay, and Rainbow Around the Sun; the banjo thing with Bela Flick is surprisingly decent, especially musically; the shorts are good this year; avoid Bootleg, Wisconsin; Waiting for Sarah Marshall was the best sort of Apatow; and Battle for Seattle is 20 minutes of riot footage surrounded by 100 minutes of Sid Fields's Idiot's Guide to Dramatic Situations.
