Happy podcast anniversary Matt, Jessamyn, pb, Cortex & all of us who love MetaFilter :)

You guys were talking about Orkut's popularity- here's the Le Monde map on social network services.

I think the mystery Québécoise caller was loiseau.
In addition to Viewropa: MadameMartin.
Thanks!

Hmph. The first podcast to come out after my hugely popular front page post, only after it's become irrelevant because the site has gone dark.... you waited this long just to avoid mentioning it. How very, very petty.

I can absolutely see why the reference to the ending of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly was escaping Jessamyn's brain. You absolutely wouldn't wanna invite speculation as to which one was which.

I think jessamyn was talking about the SNL digital short which parodied the finale of one of the seasons of the OC. Here's the the Metafilter thread about it. It was pretty funny.

I would say it's more Death Cab for Cutie guy, not Modest Mouse.

peacay: I think the mystery Québécoise caller was loiseau.

I even posted in the MeTa thread that I'd called! : (
Maybe you 'merkuns were expecting it to be pronounced loy-zoo or somethin'.

Maybe you 'merkuns were expecting it to be pronounced loy-zoo or somethin'.

After reading the site in text for years, it's totally brain-bending to hear audio versions of everyone's username. Like with jouke's name, we were blown away by the pronunciation clashing with how we guessed what it sounded like in our brains years ago.

So, did he get his laptop back? He's commented since, so I assume he did...

I found the timezone part of this one appropriate, as I downloaded the podcast to keep me awake until 3 AM, so that a post on the green would be seen by Californians first thing in their morning. Eerie timing! Maybe not so eerie as the Dyatlov business, but I'll take what I can get (and keep my tongue, thankyou).

My name is pronounced Astrizich Zombizitch.

Well that makes no sense at all. How is that any kind of Mexican standoff? (Dunno about the SNL skit because it's not there any more.)

Obviously, this was the correct analogy:

jess, cortex and pb struggle for access to the mefi server after mathowie's death.

No kidding? So is mine.

This is the SNL skit (I changed the FPP link). I guess it's not a Mexican standoff per se.

Thanks bluefly, I knew immediately what she was talking about, and I was just starting to dig through my old links in an effort to find it.

It's a shame that the Predator link from the original post has been pulled from youtube. After watching the cleverness of the others, it was a perfect conclusion to the meme.

Whoops -- somehow I forgot to call in even with the extra week. One day!

Wow, thanks for going back to the Adam Shepard story, jdroth does a much better job of interviewing him than the original article and I might have missed that link.

Oh -- the Bob & Doug title is supposed to mean "it's a beauty way to go, eh?"
posted by loiseau at 8:33 AM on March 3

Yay, loiseau! You got it! Score one for Google Translator! (On my end, not yours. I speak no French, hein?)
posted by not_on_display at 9:18 AM on March 3

Well, it's a bit too literal a translation... ("chemin" mean road) but I got the gist.

I haven't listened to the podcast yet, so I don't know if this gets mentioned or not, but I just wanted to make sure that Audrey Johnston gets credit for the song "Shelter". All I did was post it.

Hey, speaking of all the great songs coming out recently -- is there going to be a MeFi Music Challenge theme for March?

Anniversary podcast is #23? Very Discordian, I must say!

No, I am leaving tomorrow and still without my laptop. Small mercies, having my super excellent new laptop waiting for me when I arrived here in Canada took away the sting a bit, but man am I pissed off.

None of the legal advice worked out, btw. Left messages on four different lawyers' answering machines, never heard back from one. Go figure.

On the other hand, I guess this is part of my small individual contribution to defending freedom, so hey, it's all good.

Sweet! My dorky TMBG Ask MeFi made it to the podcast! And I made #1 and Jessamyn laugh (and yes, kinda make fun of me). My life can officially end.

Jessamyn: the concert is this Saturday night in Jackson, Miss., ... I think the Ask post will still be open, so if it is I'll post a recap.
posted by fijiwriter at 10:44 AM on March 4

I was worried that super excellent new laptop was the one that was stolen, so I guess that's something to be thankful for, though the laptop seizure still sucks.
posted by misha at 4:10 PM on March 4

True story: when Meatbomb spent the night at my house, the fan in his laptop was so loud, I was sure it ran on unleaded.

Excellent podcast, once again.
