Metafilter Wand: 27-66 damage per second. March 11, 2008 11:20 AM   Subscribe

Are there still any Metafilter-specific World of Warcraft guilds?

Hopefully ones that would lend themselves either to "social guilds" or to leveling — I've not raided much yet and I think I'm a bit too n00bish to start it quite yet. But, frankly, I don't know anyone in the game, and am curious if I know any Mefites on there. Nine million people, after all.

Two are mentioned in the Mefi FAQ, but that particular page looks like it might be a bit dated, especially since the domain name of one of the two doesn't even exist anymore ...

Well, I don't know about other MeFi folk, but I'm on Hyjal with Hylander Alliance and our guild is fun, has a nice mix of grownups and kids and takes a fairly laid-back attitude about raiding--we do fun raids in old world instances as well as Kara and the like. We're pretty good about helping folks level and I'd be happy to help you if you wanted to start a new toon on our server. My main is Krystaleena a lvl 70 Hunter.

There, now you know someone else with a high geek score.

huh. i've been wondering the same thing. i've been through all the content there is in the game at the moment, and haven't played in a few months because content is my motivation and not the damn gear.

if people are interested in congregating somewhere and tackling WotLK, I would be down for sure.

Since a lot of MeFite Azerothians are going to browse this:

My guild, Juggernauts of Kael'thas-Alliance, is currently recruiting for 25-mans. Kara attunement is required but you don't necessarily need to have experience. We farm Kara for badges and end up sharding most of what drops, so we can get people geared up pretty fast. We also run ZA for fun, and are working on downing Gruul (have downed Maulgar a few times).

If you're interested in joining a friendly guild that's on the verge of pushing into SSC/TK, send me a MefiMail! We'd love to have you.

Everybody should post their Armory info so that all future Metafilter-drama can be settled via corpse-camping.

I run an Alliance guild on Windrunner. We're very happy to have folks come on for whatever they want to do. Our raid unit is only up to SSC/TK, and our PvP crew is mostly just at the having fun stage, but we do a little of everything. We have 4 KZ raids going at the moment. The focus is on being supportive and having fun.

We're a 21 and over guild.

Here's a post about our last social event -

My wife and I, as well as at least one of the officers, are daily MeFi readers. We'd be happy to have a few more folks, and wouldn't mind being a "MeFi" home in WoW.

I know most of those words individually. In that order, though-- total impenetrability.

Metafilter Wand: 27-66 damage per second.

Honestly? I really don't think so. I'm pretty sure that a MeFi wand would do a nearly infinite amount of Fire Damage, with a duration of approx 1 week. I'm sure there would be a small amount of Shadow and Arcane damage, not to mention stunning and decreased speed. Along with the -5000 armour reduction, you would probably gain a +75% chance to catch anyone around you on fire. Oh, and no one would understand you because you'd only be able to speak gibberish.

My wife and I have been wanting to start a "casual" guild for adults (our current guildmaster is somewhat immature; she's constantly promoting her alts to officers, and chastising us for using Guild gold; also, I have a little difficulty taking orders from someone still in high school). So we'd be willing to start one up (PvE) if others like Mike are interested. Maybe on one of the brand new realms?

blue_beetle: It doesn't matter what the stats are, no one is going to use a blue wand no matter how good it is when there are so many easy to get epic ones.

So true. I quit WoW 6 months ago and still miss it. I used to play 20-30 hours a week which wasn't that much compared to the rest of my guild.

I'm on Proudmoore: 47 Prot Warrior (Viesse) and 40 Hunter (Tethyra, need to respec her talents). I'm in a guild, technically, but I mostly started it so coined and I could pool resources more easily. Having said that, if people are on that server and interested in grouping up or leveling I'd love company; feel free to friend me or send me game mail/MeMail. I have yet to PvP though I'm not fundamentally opposed to it.

I'm not terribly serious about it (anywhere from 0 to >20 hours a week, depending on whether I game on weekends or have lost interest that particular week). But hey, WoW is fun and Mefi is fun; ping me.

This would be great! I ended up in some guild for my main char with a bunch of people I don't know. I'd rather be in a guild with a bunch of people I don't know from Metafilter! I have characters all over the place, from Boulderfist to Kirin Tor to god knows what else. I am a nerd.

We should start our own guild. And name it something uber geeky. And our tabards should be blue, green, and grey. And it should cost 5G to join. And you can't raid for a week. And did I mention that I am a nerd?

(our current guildmaster is somewhat immature; she's constantly promoting her alts to officers, and chastising us for using Guild gold; also, I have a little difficulty taking orders from someone still in high school)

I've written like five responses and deleted them all for being too mean. I will try to keep this friendly and constructive:

1. Throw out all of your gear. Literally all of it. (Except for your fraternity ring.) None of it is any good for hunters. Get gear with agility. Spirit is not your primary stat. (DON'T SPEND YOUR GUILD'S MONEY ON THIS)

2. You should respec. Your talent spec skips or only partially invests in most of the most of the best hunter talents. (DON'T SPEND YOUR GUILD'S MONEY ON THIS)

3. It's poor form to complain about people objecting to your taking money of theirs that they prefer you not take.

4. Judging by your guild leader's Armory page, she seems to have some understanding of what she's doing. (Though I'm kind of mystified as to why she skipped SoC.)

5. Fuck, I got ganked by some asshole standing on a hut while typing this. We all suck so bad :(

Ooh ooh! Do me next! I'm Zulrum (the one and only), a very casual player who just came back to the game recently. Don't expect to see any raiding gear, just welfare epics.

MeFi Armory contests, ain't nothing better!

Anybody play on Gorefiend?

1:

I am not a hardcore WoW player; I have a wife, 3 kids, and 2 jobs. I have fun with the gear and spec that I currently have. You're not being mean, you're being elitist, and you deserve to be ganked.

I do not use my guild's money; in fact I've put more money into the bank than taken out; same with gear. But then why should I be surprised that, as an elitist, you're a know-it-all that knows-nothing?

I'd be down to join a Metafilter guild, but how would we possibly agree on a server to play on? I'm quite attached to my main character that I've been building on Kirin Tor. She's horde, and her name's Shadenfreude. But I think I heard something about being able to transfer characters over now, is that true? And how will we agree on a faction? Flip a coin? Majority rules?

I hope the non-geeks stay out of this thread. I feel like I just did something really embarrassing, like publicly announcing in a non-gaming forum what character I play on World of Warcraft or something like that. Oh wait...

Actually, I meant to come back to this a couple days ago.

There is an existing MetaFilter guild on Maelstrom (PVP) called The Blue. It was created in June or July 2006. I checked in there a couple days ago and found out that, somehow, I'm now the guild leader (I'm #1! I'm #!1, I'm #1!). Checking the other members last login dates, the most recent login was 10 months ago. I think it's safe to say the guild is pretty much dead. BUT, if someone wants to revive it, just let me know in a MeMail and I'll transfer guild ownership over to that person.
posted by deborah at 12:27 PM on March 19, 2008

I'd be willing to transfer over one of my alts if a Metafilter guild started up somewhere. Not if you're all filthy Alliance, though.

WCityMike: SSC is Serpentshrine Cavern, and TK is Tempest Keep. They are generally considered to come after Gruul and Magtheridon in 25-man raid progression, but before Black Temple and Mount Hyjal.

The problem with starting a new guild is that it will likely fade away. Since there is nothing in-game that has a MeFi focus, people will naturally end up doing their own thing. Without a common focus you'll never build the support or leadership structure needed to keep things running. The best way to go is to latch onto an existing guild that a) is open to such a thing and hopefully is run by MeFi folk, and b) has a diverse activity set that will support a random sampling of MeFi WoW players.

My guild has those qualities. See above for links.
