Why is the home page so slow to build?

Why is the home page so slow to build? When I go to http://metafilter.com, I have a 7-10 second wait before I start getting any data. Is it just Cold Fusion churning? Link detail pages come over after just a 1 or 2 second pause.

It's due to my chunky SQL programming. I spent a few hours last weekend trying to optimize them, but they still need a lot of work. Even sitting next to the metafilter box, I see the index page building take about 7-8 seconds on average.

I'm working on it.

Open the source! :-)

SQL is something more people know that Cold Fusion, perhaps we can hack at it for you.
