Los Angeles-area Mefizens, I will be in your fair 'wood from Tuesday the 15th 'til Sunday the 20th.

I'm mostly occupied during that time, but I am free for dinner or a drink on Tuesday evening or Sunday evening before my redeye flight back to Montreal. I'm also hoping to make a trip to the Museum of Jurassic Technology on Sunday afternoon.

If you'd like to hang out and/or punch me in the face for something I've said to you on Metafilter, please let me know.

Just hypoethically, what if someone were to want to punch you in the face for something you've said to them on metafilter, but they're not in the LA area? Are you willing to accommodate a more geographically diverse group of potential face-punchers?

Just hypothetically.

I'll have to check my calendar for the months to come, but I'm sure it can be arranged.

We (contraption y yo) are moving to the area in that very span of time, could make a 17th or 18th eveningtime thing, and would be more than happy to break in our SoCal Residence with a meetup.

We live about a mile away from the MoJT, and would likely be up for something on Sunday. Maybe foursquare.

Also, Tuesdays are our regular bar night, and the bar'd be a good one to have a meet-up at, so long as we got there early enough to grab the annex. It's bring your own iPod night, which is both good and bad, and the bartenders are entertaining.

tiny trivia fact: when I built metafilter in early 1999, I lived one block away from MoJT, on Cardiff. There's an awesome thai food place two doors down (Emerald Thai). Be sure to order the "flaming meat".

I for one welcome our flaming meat overlords. I'm sorry, it had to be said.

I would be up for a Tuesday or Sunday meetup, but I'm wary of people bringing me somewhere to "learn things" and "get cultured". Foursquare and loads of beer sound mighty fine though.

Derek, if you've never been to the MoJT, you should go at least once. I won't ruin it by trying to describe the experience, but it's not what you'd call a traditional museum experience.

Sounds like good times, I'm in.
posted by Space Kitty at 12:00 PM on April 12, 2008

Then I must insist on a bar visit toot sweet before any learning shenanigans occur.

I've been looking for a good excuse to go to that Jurassic museum for a while now. So if a MeFi-style invasion of the place is being planned, I'm in. Drinks on Sunday evening would be good too.
posted by epimorph at 3:13 PM on April 12, 2008

I'm (probably) in! Decide time and place amongst yourselves (either Tues evening or all day Sunday) both seem fine to me.

And yeah, the MJT rocks, precisely because it confounds such boring expectations as "learning" and "culture."

I'd love to meet you Ambrosia Voyeur, but I think the 17th & 18th are out for me.

I could get into an excursion to the MoJA on Sunday, though -- maybe food/drinks after?

And we might make a Sunday afternoon thing, but as you may see, we're gonna be meeting up in SF the night before, so it'll be a test of my committment to the party lifestyle.

Sunday would be awesome.

I've been in this burg for about 6 months now, and haven't had a single taker on my standing offer to check out the MoJT. Of course MetaFilter comes through for me. I can't commit, but I'll be keeping a close eye on these proceedings.

I'm up for it as well. Have we settled on a day?

Let's pick a day so we can sidebar this bad boy.

Gotta be Sunday for me. The museum closes at 6:00; whaddya think, 2:00? 2:30? 3:00?
posted by loiseau at 9:50 PM on April 14, 2008

Have fun--I will be entertaining my visiting parents.
posted by mandymanwasregistered at 10:06 PM on April 14, 2008

I'd vote for 3:00. There's a nonzero probability that I wouldn't wake up in time for 2:00. :) Besides, it's not a very big museum.
posted by epimorph at 12:41 AM on April 15, 2008

I can't make it to the museum Sunday afternoon, but if you're planning food/drinks after 5 p.m. or so I could possibly make that.
posted by Kraftmatic Adjustable Cheese at 3:57 PM on April 15, 2008

Vote for 3pm. I'm sure it'll run a couple of hours after that.
posted by jmhodges at 4:04 PM on April 15, 2008

MoJT at 3pm on Sunday is looking good for me, unless I'm incredibly lucky. Probably down for food/drinks afterwards as well. Any suggestions for places near the museum, or would it be better to hash it out that day with those who show up?
posted by carsonb at 4:25 PM on April 15, 2008

I don't know about places nearby. Thai place that mathowie mentioned would be alright but working it out there would be fine by me.
posted by jmhodges at 6:15 PM on April 15, 2008

I'll look around. It's my memory that drinkin' establishments are a bit thin on the ground there (the ones in Culver are overpriced and suckish), though up near Sepulveda, they get better.

Oh arg. Now I'm in San Diego and my mom's looking at me saying, "I'm fine. Your sister just made you think I was dying because she was feeling sorry for herself and wanted to go home and have you take care of me instead. I was weak yesterday but I'm fine. No, I wasn't knocking at death's door yet."

I mean.... yay, my mom's ok. But arg because I just cancelled all work and life plans and drove nine hours straight thinkin' I was about to become an immediate orphan and instead I'm having fantasies of sororicide. (??? and if that's not a word, I'm making it one.)

D'aw! Missing a meetup AND a miss lynnster sighting. dhammond and I will be out of town, but there had better be photos to come back to, dang it!

So... Is the plan to meet at the museum at 3 pm and go from there?
posted by epimorph at 10:57 PM on April 18, 2008

Right. I got an email asking about places to go afterwards. It kinda depends on how folks feel and how long they take. I've been through the museum, like, five or six times now, so it only takes me about 20 minutes to see everything I need to see, but it usually takes an hour to an hour and a half for most folks (though museum fatigue can set on something fierce).

Afterwards, we have choices based on whether we want drinks or not (I say yeah) and dinner or not (maybe?), and based on how much walking folks feel up for. The best place for drinks (Saints and Sinners) is pretty much out of walking distance from the museum, but close enough to drive (it's actually perfect bike range, but that's unlikely to be the popular mode).

There's food nearby, and also by the bar (a pretty good thai spot and a pretty good mexican joint).

Anybody who wants to skip the museum can email me and get my phone number, and I'll tell you where we end up.

Got email from loiseau. She'll "be at the museum of jurassic tech at 3pm tomorrow for sure"

Man, I wanted to make it but I've gotta stay in SD for one more day. :(
posted by miss lynnster at 9:02 AM on April 20, 2008

I may try to swing by the museum but I'll email klang for info on post-museum drinks, which is a slightly higher probability.

HEAVY METAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
posted by loiseau at 8:04 AM on April 21, 2008

Yeah, so, it was Metal Sunday at the bar that I usually go to, which is run by metalheads but is not a metal bar. So, yeah, that was loud.

And AWESOME!

I'm sorry that I didn't check my email again and get Mzurer's info. My bad.

I think louseau was the only one who took photos. Da Shiv sez y'all too much pressure.

I came late to this post and the bar, but I had good time (er, in both?). We should have gone to the Thai place Math Owie recommended upthread. Next meet-up at Rae's Lounge?

I don't know who it was I talked to at the meetup about drinking in public in Montreal, but when I was at the corner store earlier tonight I noticed they have a bottle opener nailed to the wall just as you go out the door.

Hi! I just moved to SoCal! Anybody wanna come to a housewarming party at my house? It's not exactly near you, in all likelihood, but it'll be a lot of fun. Saturday. Ventura. 5pm. Crashing space available. BBQ and Boozeathon. Memail me, eh?
