DC meetup over Memorial Day? Any takers? April 12, 2008 8:13 AM Subscribe
I'm planning a trip up to DC over Memorial Day weekend. Anyone wanna meet up? My days of travel are somewhat flexible, but basically somewhere between Thursday the 22 and Tuesday the 27.
I'll be staying with a friend who recently moved to Adams Morgan, and I'm pretty much not in the know as far as what's around. I'll likely be carless, too.

I'm in, probably. We should be moving to DC the week before.

I'm up for a meetup on that Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Adam's Morgan works perfectly for me.

I would be interested in meeting you and some DC Mefites around this time.

I'd like to see another DC MeFi meetup - I have yet to make it to one (I went to the Mexico City one - my first), and i'd love to have one in my home city. How would Thursday, May 22 sound for people?

For me, at least, Thursday would be the least optimal day, as it's the earliest I could possibly get there.
I'm glad people are starting to answer though! I was wondering if there were any mefites in DC!

Ok, later is good. Let's hear some other suggestions.
And yes, there are tons of MeFi-ers in DC.

Stewriffic: I think these threads tend to go more smoothly if the OP picks a date/time and puts a stake in the ground. As for location, I think the last meetup at Nanny O'Brien's went really well. It'd be convenient for someone staying in Adam's Morgan.

Well, if y'all had a good time there last time, excellent. It looks like MeFi has a facilitator/host at Nanny O'Brien's as well. I'll give him a heads up about it, what say?
OK Friday, May 23. Nanny O'Brien's. I'll memail peeedro.

Have fun!

That's fine. This is DC, many of us do not own cars.

I wasn't thinking when I responded to Stewriffic, but I leave the 21st for two weeks of backpacking in Oregon and will not be in town for the meet-up. That shouldn't necessitate any changes in the meet-up plans; I can still reserve the big table in the back room and since I have more lead time for this meet-up I should be able to bully THE POWERS THAT BE to offer the MeFites some drink specials.
Also, for anyone sitting on the fence, the City Paper chose Nanny's as their best Irish bar. That, however, may only indicate that the staff at Nanny's have been sleeping with the right people.
I'm only coming if our hostess is a pirate again.
I don't know if that was ever explained fully, but we call our manager The Pirate Captain as a reference to Anthony Bourdain's description of his formative restaurant experience in Kitchen Confidential. The pirate ship is an apt metaphor for our little bar (and probably most others) as the people I work with are singularly motivated by booty. And I mean that both in terms of treasure and sexual exploits: the bar staff is driven by the opportunity to make mostly tax-free income in the manner of cash-in-hand at the end of the night while they are all on a mission to sleep their way through the city's population that is attractive, willing, or drunk enough to fit the bill. They lie, they cheat, they steal anything that's not bolted down or on camera, they drink Jameson and Jäger as if it's their daily multivitamin, do drugs and pop pills, fuck anyone, and take pride and comfort in their freedom from desks, rules, dress codes, and a normal life. But they do observe a moral code, which is not set down in writing, and I am just starting to figure it out.
At the center of this chaos is The Pirate Captain--sometimes holding things together, sometimes stirring the pot to make a bigger mess.

I am a single parent on the 23rd and the 26th, but I'm sure the baby would love a red pickle.
By the way, anotherpanacea, whoever's stool sample that is should really get themselves to a gastro-interologist post haste!

About what time do people think they'll be showing up and staying 'till? I'm flying back into DC that night, and I'm not totally sure when I'll be getting in; it might be fairly late but if there's a good chance people will be around I'll try to make it over.
I missed the last one but had a great time the one before that...be great to see everyone again.

Sure. Let's say 7. Do I have to do anything special? I don't have any metafilter signs printed up or any of the special accouterments I've seen in other meetup pictures. Anyone care to help on that front? This is me if anyone needs someone to recognize.

Turns out that it's a tee shirt. Green tie-dye with the number 34 on it. A lot like the one I was wearing week when Ollie North walked by me at Glen Echo. The same one, in fact.
