Everybody needs a mux. April 16, 2008 12:46 AM   Subscribe

Can we add muxtape to the social apps list on profile pages (and of course to the keen new social explorer)? I'd love to keep track of the mefi-mixes.

I'm listening to zosiablue right, but only because I just happened to spot her name on the muxtape front page in the split second it was there.

you could always add it to your "blurb about you" section.

I'm actually more interested in seeing other people's mixes, though. It would be great to see a list of everyone with a muxtape via the social explorer thingy.

Thanks, Sarge; listening now, and it sounds great! I currently have a Laundry Day mix up, btw... to be replaced whenever the next big significant event occurs in my life. Like Cookin' Supper, or Taking a Bath.

I'm already there. (and I stole the Miriam Makeba track of Jessamyn. I am not ashamed.)

Nice mix sarge!

Does anyone know if muxtape will let you upload one long MP3? As in a side of an actual mix tape.

That Miriam Makeba track will cure what ails you. I have two: jessamyn and library.

Doh. For the longest time I couldn't see what the big deal was with a site that just lists songs on a mixtape. That's because I use NoScript and Flashblock and the result was that the blocked flash icons are down at the very bottom of the page where I never saw them.

Hey, my first post to MeTa, but wanted to make up for my little snark in the original muxtape thread. I've since jumped on the bandwagon as a fellow muxtape-lover; it's nice and simple, easy to use, and easy to share. I'm all for sticking muxtape in the social exploder doohickey.

Oh, and here's mine - currently all Japanese music..

I was going to come in and be all oh cool yes can we have this pony, and now I'm tabbing open various peoples' muxes and realizing that over the weekend I acquired a goodly amount of new music that I haven't even listened to yet, and I don't need to discover anything new right now because I haven't even listened to all the old-new stuff I just got.

I only have two ears, people. And for some reason my boss doesn't like it when I have my headphones on when she's trying to talk to me.

There is too much goodness! Please make it stop. For a little while, anyway.

Oh!

It doesn't just display mixtape playlists. It plays the songs.

I'd like to take back all the things I've been muttering under my breath the last few weeks about this goddamned site with the kids today and their yadda yadda.

Instead I can get ready to complain about corporate IT blocking it in a week or two. As long as I get to complain about something, I'm good.

Probably. It won't shock me if the whole site vanishes at some point. It'll sure sadden me, though, I've already found new stuff to buy through it.

I'm most worried about the final bit in the terms, though. "Muxtape is alive." I don't know why, exactly. It just sounds ominous, as when the RIAA attempts to pull its plug, it'll launch all ICBMs and commence to trying to kill Sarah Connor.

Yep.

I think what helps also is that it is a stream, rather than downloadable content. I notice they added a "buy this mp3" Amazon link to each track now, as well.

I did an all-female one awhile back.

I looked at this yesterday and tried to find some instructions or idea about how it works for the person who signs up. But I couldn't find anything on the site. I don't want to sign up unless I actually want to use it, and since I don't know how it works I don't know if I want to use it or not. Am I missing a link or something? Or can someone tell me the process to set up a muxtape (I assume I have to upload my own files?) really briefly? Is the user documentation this bad once you sign up?

And yeah I could just sign up. But I don't want to give them my details or whatever if I don't even know what they are.

Okay, yeah, here's mine.

I hope you guys still think I'm cool enough to hang around here after you see what's on the mix.
posted by rtha at 2:56 PM on April 16, 2008

shelleycat, once you get in there I think you'll find everything to be pretty self explanatory. The only thing they ask for is an email (you can always use a throwaway Yahoo one or something). As you guessed, there's a thing where you upload up to 12 files (the only rule seems to be that you can't have two songs by the same artist, for some quasi-legal reason or whatever) and then you can put them in whatever order you want, since this is supposed to be like a mixtape, and the track order on a mixtape is very important, heh.

And that's it, pretty much. There are so far no other geegaws or doodads to deal with other than picking a color. It's all that Web 2.5 Big Font Simplicity type of thing.

rtha: I hope you guys still think I'm cool enough to hang around here after you see what's on the mix.

Mine has Lohan and Britney on it. I think you will be ok.

Thats strange. I was able to put two tracks by the same artist on my mix. I just made it today, maybe the rules have changed.
posted by Sailormom at 3:32 PM on April 16, 2008

I think the rules, such as it is, is enforced, if it is at all, reactively rather than proactively.

Cool, that's exactly what I wanted to know. Thanks.

They really should have some small paragraph somewhere saying this, plus the bit about how random listeners can stream the files (since that part's not totally obvious). Would take them all of five minutes. I looked at this site ages ago, rolled my eyes and left not realising how much good functionality there actually was. It's actually a pretty cool site, they should totally blow their own horn some more.

OK, after thinking about it for most of the day, I finally went with idea/theme #1. Some songs are NSFW, in case you're worried. Others are really, really NSFW. That was fun though. I'm glad someone finally explained this whole thing (see cortex, you weren't the only one).

A friend recently asked me to come up with a mix of one song from each year I've been alive (without irony). That one will take a bit more time I think.

See? Not crazy.

You know what it is? You know why I believed that there could be something as foolish as a site for nothing but posting mixtape tracklistings, that other people would go look at and, like, say "oh that's a really great tracklist good job here's mine"? Something nuts like that? Do you know why I would think that?

Do you, you great lot of nutters?
posted by cortex (staff) at 9:36 PM on April 16, 2008

sleepy pete, that's a fun idea from your friend. Of course it will only work on muxtape if you are 12.
posted by taz at 9:46 PM on April 16, 2008

cortex, there's a place called Art of the Mix that's just mix tape ideas without the songs (or at least was until sendspace and the like came along), so maybe that's what you were thinking of? I know I hated AotM because I could never actually listen to the songs.

taz, I know, but I could always sign up with close to three different e-mails. Three in a little while... yeah, I know, what a drag it is getting old.

Also, here's idea/theme #5: days are widgets. It's work avoidance, OK?
