May Day Bank Holiday Weekend in New York! April 27, 2008 9:35 AM   Subscribe

NYC meetup next week? Sunday or Monday, 4 or 5 May?

I'll be in New York City on those days and would love to meet up. I am flexible on the date so people can post their preference here. Also suggestions for a venue would be good since you're the domain experts. I think I am going to be staying in the East Village.

I'll be in New York Monday night. Chelsea. I can't offer a best spot but I could also meet.

Oh! Yes! I'm totally down for htis and it's right before my birfday. (If it's Sunday, please after 6). And if you are satying in the east vallage, you're in luck, as we rarely venture north of 15th or west of 3rd.

Manitobas!!

Heh, I was thinking about the NY meetups and how much I enjoy them when they are not in the East Village (and hey, I like the EV, I used to live there...)

But anyways, I could venture out for a bit. Any night is good for me.

I've got finals coming up, so I can't come down. Dump a cuppa joe on the sidewalk for me.

Sunday is better than Monday for me. And let's get out of the East Village- I've had all the Manitobas I can take for awhile (no offense, jonmc).

My new air hockey league is meeting on May 5th at Manitoba's. Ya'll should come out! Air hockey fun for those who want it, regular bar-type action for those who don't.

Hi-Fi shouldn't be too crowded on a Monday.

I miss Brownies. Funny they kept the URL for Hi-Fi.

I'll be on a flight to London, and there for two weeks. Been meaning to email grouse about some kind of meetup there.

I think I could do either night. I lack the prowess for competitive air hockey. I can watch things happen with the best of them, though.
posted by Bookhouse at 3:34 PM on April 27, 2008

The Air Hockey league is for fun, not competition. In fact, I'm the organizer and I suck more than anybody else there.

And it's a killer bar. And Handsome Dick told me he's voting for Obama, because Bruce Springsteen said he should.

The 5th is Cinco de Mayo, fyi.
posted by Stynxno at 4:10 PM on April 27, 2008

That is a damn good point.
posted by Bookhouse at 4:17 PM on April 27, 2008

Is that a bad thing?
posted by grouse at 4:45 PM on April 27, 2008

Stynxno, is there something related going on that you wanted to do?
posted by brujita at 5:00 PM on April 27, 2008

It's a bad thing because the bars will be far louder and more crowded than on your average Monday night, or a good thing in that the bars will be far louder and more crowded. Me, I hate people, so it's a bad thing.

We can go someplace to eat rather than to a bar.....
posted by brujita at 5:06 PM on April 27, 2008

It's not a make-or-break deal for me, by the way. I'm a trooper.
posted by Bookhouse at 5:11 PM on April 27, 2008

I, too, would rather not go out on Cinco de Mayo. Hi-Fi looks like it would be a cool place for us to meet up on Sunday night- how about we meet up there around 6?
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 5:23 PM on April 27, 2008

Sounds good to me.

And I'll be in NYC this week but only until Saturday. Party on, folks.

I live in NYC and Monday is also the last day of classes for me so I will be ready to have a relaxing cocktail whereas Sunday I'll be grading papers like a lunatic fwiw.

I always say I'm going to go.. this time I might just go. ^_^

I'll be flying 19 hours into NYC on the 6th. Sad :(

I'm back in town so I will try to join at HiFi if I can, but we're moving into our new apt this weekend so who knows.

Also, I'm soft-planning a sort of urban-adventure meetup (i.e. not primarily based in one bar so much as learning about a few interesting nooks and crannies of a given nabe), dates TBD once I hear back from special-k on when he's coming out to visit next month. Stay tuned...

i'm with Sunday too. Manhattan on Cinco de Mayo is just a general pain in the ass - kinda like St. Pat's day can be. Plus, there's a taco truck in Queens with my name on it for Cinco de Mayo. Viva Mexico!

I'll do my best, but I might have to eat delicious outer borough Ethiopian food then.

I'll try to be there. My boyfriend and I are driving out to Connecticut to see potential puppies that afternoon. I don't know how tired we will be. Maybe we'll be infused with puppy power.

Just to avoid any confusion, we are meeting at Hi-Fi at 6 on Sunday. See y'all there!

If I didn't have an indoor soccer game at 7pm, I would have stopped by, since it's about a block from where I live, but alas, I gotta make the game. Enjoy yourselves!

I have an important thing to do tomorrow, but if does not run late I will try to pop by. I have missed too many of these and my pal B-thoth says they are great.

Sorry I peeled off from the group early, piratebowling and I went to the park for a bit to do a tarot reading, and we wound up having to break up a domestic disturbance and call the police. Everyone had fled Crif by the time all that had blown over.

We wound up at Lucy's on Avenue A...sorry you weren't there for the last leg. :-(

Hey, kids, sorry for the disappearing act after Crif Dogs. I was talking outside, and then all of a sudden we were walking, and then without even realizing it, I was walking home without saying proper goodbyes. I'm easily confused, and as meetups split into small groups like that I find myself getting lost and distracted by shiny things. It was lovely seeing all of you, old favorites and new friends alike. Also, thank you all for reintroducing me to the wonder of the hot dog.

This lady and this dude were having a big screaming fight in front of their two small children that went on for about ten minutes, and then she hauled off and punched him. Me and thankyoujohnnyfever got in the middle (I got my shoe-lace stepped on and a toy thrown at my by the enraged womanoceros) and stopped her attack, telling them both that they needed to take a walk in opposite directions and blow off some steam. Which was tricky, because that lady was really booking it trying to circle around the park to catch him on the other side, so I called the police. Fortunately, TYJF helped the guy into a cab before she could catch up and further humiliate herself and traumatize her children.

Whoa, someone who looks a lot like me in the mirror forgot all about this... Catch you next time! Sorry about that.

So here's the deal. The night before the meetup, I had a dream that I was turned into a moose, and suddenly hunters appeared in the woods and I had to run for my life. They shot at me as I struggled to cross a frozen stream (it's really hard to run as a moose if you've never done it before) and finally I escaped-- by hiding in Gladys Knight's basement.

Upon waking, I learned from the internet that the moose is a valuable shamanic totem: "Moose calves are born with their eyes open, and those with this totem are usually born with their inner eyes open. Moose uncovers the depth of who you are and aligns you with your inherent wisdom. Moose teaches us to value ourselves and reward ourselves for a job well done."

That evening at the meetup, the first thing I saw when I entered the bar was the Buckhunter video game, and the screen it was flashing said HUNT MOOSE. So of course I did, to complete the circle. And stynxno took pictures of me fulfilling my cosmic destiny-- a job well done. So what I really want to know is, where are these pictures?!?

(Also, Gladys Knight was not on the jukebox. Brujita and I checked.)

I just realized that we should have checked K rather than G.

Agreed. All, shootin' moose and steppin' between feuding families.
posted by piratebowling at 11:02 PM on May 5, 2008

It's probably best I couldn't make it (just stepped off a plane that night); I might have placed my body heroically between the gun and the moose, and nobody likes a martyred wet blanket.

Hah. I couldn't make it because I was in Wyoming - shooting moose! For reals.
