Philly: May MetaFilter Movie Meet Up May 5, 2008 9:35 AM   Subscribe

Because I like living on the edge, I want to invite you--Philadelphia-area internet strangers--into my home for an evening (or weekend afternoon) of snax and movie watching. This idea popped into my head because of the recent Sneakers thread (the fact that so many people gleefully clicked through to answer the question made me realize that you are the type of people I need to watch movies with).

Dates up for consideration:
Friday, May 16
Saturday, May 17
Friday, May 23
Saturday, May 24
Sunday, May 25
Friday, May 30
Saturday, May 31

Appropriate movies and snax are up for discussion, though there will most certainly be cupcakes.

I was just about to ask if I could pick up a couple of kilos of shit while I was visiting, but apparently not. I think your occupation needs a hyphen between dealer and wither to avoid further confusion.

I suggest *not* doing it memorial day weekend, as many people - such as myself - may have other plans already. I will somewhat arbitrarily suggest the 24th, since I like Saturdays.

Also: Cupcakes are excellent.

(Not that I'm really planning on visiting from 5000 miles away. I was just curious about what sort of kook opens their house to this crowd of fedora-sporting weirdos. Besides Jess, of course.)

Isn't the 24th part of memorial day weekend?
posted by JanetLand at 9:54 AM on May 5, 2008

Besides Jess, of course.

I went to a meetup at mediareport's house before I ever had one at my own house.

(really, we just need an excuse to do our spring cleaning. and a group of strangers is a good reason. i wouldn't want to be mocked on the web for having a dusty and cluttered apartment.)

Hmm. I appear to have decided that Memorial Day this year will be on on May 33.

Either way, I'm out of town through the 30th to marry a couple of my friends, so I stand by "some other time."
posted by Tomorrowful at 10:06 AM on May 5, 2008

Sorry, Jess. I was referring to your habit of having visitors you've never met come stay with you. I've always been awed by the generosity, but horrified by the potential for having to deal with insufferable house guests.
posted by PeterMcDermott at 10:08 AM on May 5, 2008

It's usually good friends who make for insufferable house guests, with strangers there's a protective layer of awkwardness.

I'm definitely interested. Sundays and Fridays might be best for me. Where, approximately, are you in the Philadelphia area? Is it the kind of area where we'll need guns at night?
posted by Deathalicious at 12:13 PM on May 5, 2008

Most certainly yes, please! I could suggest a movie or movies...but does anyone have a particular genre in mind? Do we want old or new? I love anything but horror. :-)

And many thanks in advance for making us your spring cleaning excuse, Sarah!
posted by chihiro at 12:35 PM on May 5, 2008

Ah, good point Deathalicious. I'm just a couple blocks from City Hall. Every single mode of public transit is within four blocks of my apartment door. Parking is...okay. There's a lot around the corner that's only $7, and on Sunday the meters are free.

In Scientological Russia, the meters are e!

I hope you guys have a fun meetup.

I'm in! Any of the days you suggested except Sat. the 24th work for me. And I'd be happy to bring something baked and yummy, cupcakes or otherwise. Thanks for suggesting this, Sarah!

Sounds spectacular. Unfortunately, Memorial Day weekend is right out for me. If it's another weekend, I'm in, and if it's then, have fun!

If the day works, I'm in...but I'm not going to try to dictate when it'll be. I'll keep an eye on the thred.

Okay, no Memorial Day weekend. I guess I'm the only one that didn't have plans that weekend beyond sleeping in!

Revised Dates up for consideration:
Friday, May 16
Saturday, May 17
Friday, May 23
Friday, May 30
Saturday, May 31
posted by misanthropicsarah at 1:58 PM on May 5, 2008

Well, I'll be busy on the 30th and 31st, so I vote against that. In fact, I vote *For* the 17th, but the other dates will work too.

I find it a little creepy that you've wrapped yourself into Metafilter to the point where you're having a Meetup at your own house.

I may have a thing Memorial Day weekend, but I'm free on 16-17 and I think 23.

Deathalicious, we will protect you. Several of us are trained in lethal scorn and sarcasm.

I don't like very many popular movies. Can we watch something fucked up?

I'll bring something not-dessert. Salsa and guac, anyone?
posted by desuetude at 2:43 PM on May 5, 2008

For me, AFTER May 19 is the only possibility. Because that is when I am defending my master's thesis. That I mostly have not written yet. Cheers, y'all!

Although I could maybe be persuaded to the 16 or 17 IF there are baked goods and I have not lost my mind. Other dates are fine.

No, but if that's what you're into we could have a meetup at my place.

Anyway, I am interested in this.

Hey guys, I would love to meet some Philly mefites. I was sorry to miss the last meet-up. I would prefer the 30th, but the 31st or 23rd is fine too. I'll be out of town the 16/17th.

I'm in lovely Appleton, WI for Memorial Day weekend, so I also vote for doing it the weekend after or before.

So. Did we decide on the 23rd?

Next issue: What movie do we watch?
posted by desuetude at 1:56 PM on May 8, 2008

I think I may be able to make this one! Wooo!
posted by galimatias at 2:56 PM on May 10, 2008

Official decision: May 23. 8pm.

People should bring their own beverages as all we have is water, diet coke, and various kinds of milk.

I will provide some snax (with an "x") but please feel free to bring things to share.

If you're definitely planning on coming, memail me and I'll send you my address, etc.

Movie-to-watch discussions can happen....NOW.
posted by misanthropicsarah at 6:38 AM on May 12, 2008

movies i suggest, just because i have them on hand or would probably buy them anyway:

sneakers
back to the future I, II, or III
ghostbusters I or II
gattaca
the sting
butch cassidy and the sundance kid

um, i don't know why, but i feel like i should only suggest sci-fi/techy/from the 80s/awesomely awesome movies from the 60s & 70s. it's just this vibe i get from metafilter. like you wouldn't enjoy watching it happened one night or desk set.....
posted by misanthropicsarah at 6:54 AM on May 12, 2008

I only quibble with your list in that the films on it have played on cable/regular TV fourbazillion times.

(I did just finally see The Wicker Man and was impressed by both how awesomely good and yet awesomely WTF!able it was.)

Anyway, I'll be thinking of you at my house in S. Phila., mere minutes away via the Broad St. Line or bicycle. One day i shall make it to one of these things, provided it's at a park or some other kiddy place. Have fun !
