The title of the proposed LA meetup. July 20, 2008 6:55 PM   Subscribe

I'm in LA working for a large sports league for the next two weeks, and I haven't met up in this city since E3 2005 (wow, three years already?). So, to keep me from dying of boredom, is anyone up for a meetup between Monday July 21st, and Friday August 1st?

I'll be staying at the LAX Marriott if that makes any difference, also, I will have a rental car and am willing to drive.

Let the negotiations begin.

Which quadrant of town shall we narrow in on? North of the 10 or South? West of the 405 or east?

I went to that last Wednesday on the myopenbar.com recommendation. The 2.50 'ritas are plain, over ice. Blended and with flavoring (like strawberry) is a dollar more...still a killer deal. They also serve one mean chimichanga, that rarest of delicacies in this forsaken town. There's a bar and a dance floor, or plenty of seating in the dining area. If it's Barragan's, I'll be there.

Fair enough, but I did totally own up to it at the Anaheim meet-up.

Besides, the main factor in me missing my previous meet-up (girlfriend freaking out that I was meeting people from the internet, because I had met her through the internet, so I obviously had some ulterior motive for going to a MeFi meet-up) is so very much not a consideration any longer.

FYI, The dodgers have home games the night of the 25th & 26th so there might be a bit of traffic (i.e. unbearable, mind numbing traffic) trying to get there Friday or Saturday.

They're out of town on Wednesday for $2.50 margarita night.

And there was a meetup in Sherman Oaks!?! It sucks being a noob.

All right everyone, I made agendas for you all. Please help yourself to the coffee and donuts that our new receptionist Barbra brought in. That's Bar-bra, not Bar-ba-ra. Without further ado, that brings me to the point of this meeting, vis-a-vis, notwithstanding, which is to propose that we meet on Saturday as some folks prefer to meet following a payday and weeknights are challenging, particularly for those of us who work rather faraway from these westside meetup points, and the primary reason that westside meetups are as popular as they are, after all, is because 99% of LA meetups are on the west side.

And a closing point, if I may: whoever uses the last of the paper - please reload the printer. I was waiting on a fax all afternoon due to a paper supply discrepancy.

Thank you, everyone. That's all I have.

Oh, dhammond... Could I see you privately?

OK.

What we have here are five days—Monday through Friday.

Friday's out (Splatta's gone).
Monday's out (No time machine)
Tonight should be out (Last minute)

We have Wednesday or Thursday.

Bookhouse sez "Not Thursday. On Thursday, I re-enact Strawberry Shortcake episodes on Venice Beach as one-man crime dramas."

So, we're down to TOMORROW, CHUMPS.

Options for place—

Saints and Sinners. Advantages: I know some of the bartenders; good, strong drinks. Disadvantages: Kinda costly, can be loud, has theme that is taken perhaps a little too seriously. No food (though near to Thai Boom).

The Irish Times. Advantages: Rarely crowded. Decent beer prices. Disadvantages: Not much parking. Seats kinda uncomfortable. Beer selection is mediocre (hope you like Guinness). Food sucks.

The San Fransisco Saloon. Advantages: Great turnout last time. Good seating. Has decent beer selection. Disadvantages: Sometimes crowded (last time, that was our fault). Mediocre food; mediocre beer prices.

The Over-Under. Advantages: Um… It's a place I've never been and I enjoy novelty. Apparently a sports bar taken over by hipsters, which could either be an advantage or a disadvantage.

Given that (unless someone has more options that are better):

San Francisco Saloon looks best. Tomorrow. About 7:30? Gives folks time to get off work and get some grub (there's actually a pretty decent Mexican short-order place near there, called Tacos La Flama).

Good?

P.S. - I personally can't do Wednesday OR Thursday of this week. So, no matter when we do this, somebody's not going to be able to go. Maybe everyone involved here should just list a day that works best for them and the date with the highest votes is the one?

If it's a weekend night, I'm more willing to head over to the dreaded east side, where the dead stalk the earth because zombies are, like, ironic, or something.

Isn't there a tool for doing this? I mean, some sort of robot fuhrer scheduler?

Let's try this: Doodle thing. Pick what night works best for you, and what side of town. If you can make multiple times, vote for 'em all.

Dude, we had a couple-a meetups on the East side and it was all a bunch of West siders bitching about how they had to drive across town and couldn't get shitfaced. Oh, and that weird guy with the open shirt whose Playstation I've been perma-loaned.

Plus, homeskillet is staying outside of LAX, which is on the Wess-iide.

And we over-ran the Anaheim meetup even.

But call for one on the East side, make it a weekend, and I'll try to get over there. If more folks were interested in crazy rock shows, I'd call for meetups when I was on that side of town, but I feel bad dragging my regular friends along when the show sucks, so I'd feel super-bad being all, like, come see this noize group by the way they may blow, but some guy said that they'd have Black Velvet whiskey.

I'm not against East side meet-ups. But the problem is that for the meet-ups I've been to on the West, the Westies come out. For the meet-ups I've been to on the East, the Easties have flaked.

But c'mon, have a meet-up on the East side that you put together. I'll be glad to go (assuming, of course, that it's not my malodorous presence that causes folks to flake in the East). Hell, I even went to the Valley (and had fun!), and would go again if one was out there that I could make.

Heh. So, OK, Amy and I went to see the World Famous's band, and got there just a bit after 10pm. Even noting the change in time, I'm a bit surprised that they'd finished—Zen Sushi must be the only punk club ever to run on schedule.

Instead, we saw some Carol-Burnett looking chick front a competent trio (The Human Value) that kept threatening to get good but didn't (five minutes of her humping a mic stand while wailing "You don't understand me!" made me feel like I was an unwilling proxy for previous boyfriends/parents). Then The World Famous left…

The next band, well, I didn't catch their name then, even though they said it three or four times. Turns out that they were The Urinals, who I was really excited about seeing but who, in the context of the guys in front of me, were underwhelming. What I liked most about The Urinals/100 Flowers (who I hadn't realized were the same folks until I read the page, though I have albums from both, since some dude at a record shop was big-upping them… This makes me feel a little foolish) was that they were incredibly brief blasts of punk rock, kind of like what Guided By Voices did later for indie rock. This current band had the unfortunate problem of being too competent for their material, generally. Well, and being a punk band who's started writing mid-tempo stuff too, which isn't their forte. The bassist and drummer are still fantastic though.
The final band that we stayed for I think was called The Horrors of Toledo, though I could be libeling some other innocent musicians. The best way to conceptualize them is to wed the drums from Cherub Rock to the guitar line from All Apologies (minus the final four notes), since that's exactly what they did. They were OK, I guess, for a mediocre grunge revival band that sounded like they should be at someone's high school talent show.

There was apparently also a stage downstairs, but I couldn't find it and no one wanted to tell me where it was. Which wasn't the only gripe about the venue: $6 for Fat Tire in a plastic cup? $8 for a gin and tonic might be OK, if you hadn't given me a gin and soda instead, and less than half a shot of gin. It tasted like legacy liquor, snuck from parents after older siblings had already watered the bottle down to mouthwash proof.

At least it was only $5, and gave Amy and I plenty of practice in snarking at bar bands and finding gas stations in the armpit of the 101/110/10 interchange.

The thing with the quakes down here in LA is that they seem to happen regularly enough that I'm not nervous about a 'big one.' It seems to vent the pressure rather than hoarding it. Up in the bay area things have been ominously quiet for what, almost 20 years now? That's scary.

Well that was interesting. Put a little twist on the term 'couch surfing'. I hope all is well with the rest of you LA-fites. The thing with the quakes down here in LA is that they seem to happen regularly enough that I'm not nervous about a 'big one.' I was flabbergasted watching the news afterward. The newscasters and city officials seemed to relish reminding everyone that this was 'just a precursor' and 'THE BIG ONE IS STILL COMING, NEXT TEN YEARS!' Talk about scaremongering!

As for the meetup, it looks like Barragan's closes at 9:30 tomorrow. Should we move the time up accordingly, say 7pm?

Hmm, that's weird. I've been in the bar a lot later than 9:30, so I'm wondering if that time is correct on the website. There are plenty of other bars on the block if we need to get out of there at 9:30. 7pm is fine with me for meeting.

Yeah, that struck me as weird too. If that's the haps however, I'm down for whatever little joy we may find in the surrounding area.

I have no idea how much traffic there'll be, so leaving Ventura at 6, I might be there at 7 or 830. See you then!

darn it, between work being a swamp and the emotional exhaustion of a memorial service yesterday, I think I'm just going to have to go home and collapse tonight. Sorry, splatta!

I'm totally not making it tonight, since my bus barely gets me home by 6:30 and, well, I'm a big baby whiner wah wah. (Make me the shirt. I'll wear it.)

But, I am going to Spaceland to see Nomo on the third, by God, and if any of you wanted to meet me out there, I'd encourage it. They're a large Afro-jazz ensemble whose great albums don't even really do them justice. They totally kick the ass of the Antibalas cod-Fela too, mostly through excellent actual jazz chops. They're the kind of band that you actually have to be Hitler not to enjoy. That's right—you have to be both dead and evil to not have fun. If you're only one or the other, I'd still tell you to come out (though I refuse to carpool with the dead).

Yeeeeeah, I can't come tonight either. Weeknights are often kinda tough for me. (I accidentally typed "weennights" the first time. Those are even tougher. Boy howdy.)

I'm shocked that klang won't be driving across town! speicus and I will be there, we'll do our best to represent Michigan.

Yeah, but I NEED to get drunk (and not drive) tonight. I've been editing these damn letters all day, to the point where I'm starting to take umbrage at the violation of labor laws in one of the stories about a grocery-store threesome. I'm all, like, y'know, the manager shouldn't just be offering you an extra couple of dollars to stay after and stock—he should be paying you time and a half! (Also, that's not how stocking gets done, and in a grocery store where it's so big that you have trouble hearing each other, you'd need more than three people to stock it, and also what you're doing is facing, and that's handled by the reps from the suppliers who buy shelf space, and I'm sorry, putting the whipped cream back on the shelf… Eww.)

Anyway, have fun! Interested in Nomo?

Ween made me a hundred dollars today, so I might have a weennight after all. But I think Thin Lizzy and I will miss this one due to me being a sour bastard, although the mood might strike us different later tonight.

Nomo sounds interesting, but I fear commitment.

I'm coming. Google tells me to go take the 2 down from Glendale but the 5 is equidistant from me and I could get on the 2 from there. Should I trust the machine or find my own way?

And I'm going to Barragan's, dammit.
posted by jmhodges at 5:26 PM on July 30, 2008

2 or the 5 should work, as long as you end up on the 2 as it ends. Then make sure you get off Glendale before you get to Sunset, use either Scott or Montana to jog over to Echo Park Blvd. I'll be there in a few minutes.

The lady and I really have to go to one of these. Maybe after we get hitched and she's done with school.

We need more meetups with cheap booze and a waitress who was efficient as ours was last night.

There was something glorious in the way she'd gravitate those bar trays laden with saltysweet tequila drinks over our heads, wasn't there? Blessings from above, manna from heaven, you know.

Absolutely. And "e-f-i" is vowel-consonant-vowel and I will maintain the proper pronunciation for as long as the peer pressure will allow.
