AskMe cited in Walrus article August 15, 2008 3:05 PM Subscribe
This AskMe question about sad music was cited in an article in the May 2008 issue of the Walrus.
Perhaps of interest for those of you who like to keep track of such things :) The article's not bad either. The Walrus is a Canadian New Yorker/Harpers wannabe that never quite manages to hold my attention. I was flipping through a back issue today and discovered this AskMe citation, which I had missed before.

also, the little figures in their ad on top of the page look like dildos, not walruses

Clearly they need to rebrand as LOLRUS.
And then get a bucket.

Metafilter: Can anyone recommend some pensive, melancholy, dirge-like chamber music for rainy days and blue moods?

Weird, most of the responses in that AskMe are what I'd call "achingly beautiful," not sad. Maybe that says something about me. Half glass full?

The Walrus is a Canadian New Yorker/Harpers wannabe...
In direct competition with THE EGGMAN I suppose.

Well, there's a pull-quote if I ever saw one for the Walrus.

It's a good quote. Personal ("my attention"), yet profoundly universal.
(Yes, I've bought it several times out of nationalistic guilt, and have never made it more than half way through.)

I've bought it in airports and also wanted it to be good. It reads like a Canadian campus newspaper without the BOGOF restaurant advertisements.

Here I was thinking there was an Eastern chain called BOGOF. Thanks goodness for Wikipedia.
The Walrus exists merely as a way of showing that you're of New Yorker readership quality, but with that CBC guilt.

"CBC guilt"? Huh. I dunno, man.
PBS guilt, sure; that's where I'm a freeloader. But CBC guilt? They're using taxpayer money on crud like JPod, and I'm supposed to feel guilty? No, sir.
The guilt associated with The Walrus and, moreso, MacLean's, is better compared, I think, with the Harvey's hamburger: Sure, it's a bizarre and unbeefy texture and always tastes burnt and the silly giant pickles don't really fit, but it's the only Canadian horse in that race and would be doomed to failure if we didn't all suffer the gristle every now and then.
That said, I've never read The Walrus, and MacLean's is waiting room only, assuming there's not a Time in the pile.
