Downtown Los Angeles meetup?

Further to miss lynnster's L.A. meetup suggestion, how about a downtown meetup sometime in September? Mrs ob and I have recently moved to L.A., downtown L.A. at that, and a meetup would be just swell. The Edison is a great bar and klangklangston has suggested going on a night when there's a good show on at The Smell which sounds just dandy to me. So how about it folks?

If so, make sure you visit the scenic and lovely MacArthur park.

Bring small bills. Fives, tens, twenties. Most of the crack dealers there prefer not to make change. There are about a dozen corner bottleshops nearby if you need brillo pads, a rose-in-a-glass-tube or a tallboy of high gravity malt liquor in a paper bag.

Also, don't worry too much if someone shoots you and dumps you in the lake. Some of the locals have a quaint way of showing affection. Generally your body will be recovered during the weekly dragging of the lake, but sometimes the CHUD people get to it first.

Here's The Smell. Upcoming weekend shows that could be good include the 20th and 27th of September. There look to be good shows during the week, but my old ass can't get up and going now that I'm working 10-hour days over at the Flynt factory.

Fantastic. Well, I'm happy to sort out reservations for The Edison but I'm out of the country until the 5th. I'm happy with weekends and either of those I think is good for me, although seeing as my birthday is on the 19th I might be a little dusty on the 20th, but what the hell!

You know, if we make it on a Thursday, the Edison has 35 cent martini night... plus, it's less crowded than on the weekend...

Yes, but they've changed the policy, and now you just get one 35 cent martini. They have these Indian Head nickels that they give out at the door as tokens to make sure you don't get more than your one martini.

Yeah, it's true you can only get one but it's always well made and yes, it's 35 cents. The place does get crowded though so once we have a date in mind and numbers I'll call to make a reservation. I know that on a Wednesday reservations are already in for most days that week, so I think a week in advance should do it.

Whilst I'm on this patchy internet connection in Italy, I'll put my vote in for the 20th as that seems to be what most people are aiming for. Is that cool folks? If so, once I get back we'll take final numbers and I'll make a reservation for the Edison.

SCHEISSE! I can't make it on the 20th. I promised a friend that I'd come to her birthday bash and I just got an email that it's on the 20th (which isn't the day of her birthday I hasten to add.) Damn and blast, it all seemed so easy.

Maybe 2 meetups makes sense - I'd love the socializing aspect of the Edison, but I'm not particularly that interested in listening to a live band. It seems to me that going to a concert is less than optimal for social interaction. It's hard to hear people talk, frankly.

Amanda rushed over to Ted's prone body and slapped his face, hard. Nothing. I'm still up for a meetup that then ends up at The Smell btw. I'm actually not too happy that I can't make the 20th as it seemed the best date, but I'm sure, seeing as quite a few folks seem to be keen on downtown meetups, that we could arrange another quite soon.

The 18th is at The Edison. I think that the 35c Martinis stop at 8pm, so 7pm is probably a good time to start... I'll book a table today for next week as it gets really busy there.

So, here's the deal: As I'm not sure quite how many can make it, I've been conservative and reserved a table for eight. So 6pm, Thursday 18th at the Edison it is.

If you think you can make it can you shoot me a MeMail? Next Thursday will be busy there, so it'd be good to get the numbers right. Also that way I'll mail you back with the reservation info.

Don't worry if you can't make it until later. I'll do my best to hold the fort down for a while!
