Although cortex callously and without hesitation deleted my fabulous single link youtube front page post, I still see it, albeit with a re: sidebar.

So does this mean I can go look back in the archives to my early days, and if I find the right day and time I can see me old deleted posts?

Or should I just make a quick "Ann Coluter declawed Palin with a circumcized, fixed-gear portobello" post to the Blue so I can see what it looks like?

Or maybe someone could post a screenshot ot a self-visible delete thread. Whadya say, plexi?

Oh I see, the "re:sidebar" means the blue line looks like an email reply or something.

We were trying to come up with a way to highlight it without highlighting it too much. The intention was to show you your deleted post so you can see the deleted reason once you click through.

Prior to this, we got a lot of metatalk posts saying "zomg, where did my post go?! why are you cesnorship hitlers?!!!" so we figured this would at least alleviate the disappearing posts thing, but I can see that it's not super clear why that line on the left is there or that it means something is deleted.

The new version of the deleted posts greasemonkey uses a red left border and red text (both #fcc) and also includes the deletion reason inline. Thus.

You're going about this backwards. When a post is deleted, all of the worthy content around it should slowly fade away, leaving only the lone, closed post to read for all of eternity. Then, when the user goes to MetaTalk to complain, no matter what they type and submit, their post should always come up as a new thread that says, "Sorry for my shitty post." And they shouldn't be able to comment in the thread. Then someone should knock on their door and punch them when they answer.

Alternatively, a voice recording of Matt saying "Bad dog!", the sound of a newspaper swat, followed by barking.

More seriously, perhaps an ajax-y way of removing or shrinking the post, so that once seen, the poster isn't reminded of their post every time they reload the page for the next couple of days.

posted by solipsophistocracy at 11:10 AM on October 16, 2008 [1 favorite]

You could display them in a black box, like the deleted-reason comment is displayed on the post's page. That would make more sense to me than reusing the "original poster" or "best answer" type markup from elsewhere. (Or do you want to keep that box for official messages from on high?)

Or you could use css to overlay the post with a frowny face. Or a sad puppy. Or an animated gif of Hitler censoring things.

Instead of just a blue bar, it should have the word DELETED in white-text vertically on the blue bar.

Instead of just a blue bar, it should have the word DELETED in white-text vertically on the blue bar.

Well, it should certainly say DELETED somewhere, instead of a mystery bar. From cortex's screenshot, there is no way you would know it was deleted.

It should also say "YOU ARE A BAD PERSON", but I can see why that would not be done.

A picture of the system in action, re: this post.

I don't get it, do people see their posts like that (with the bar) all the time, or do people only see their posts like that when they've been deleted? Because as it is, that bar is the same as the "this comment by original poster" indicator bar in AskMe, which has nothing to do with deleted posts and thus is confusing.

You know Cortex is getting called out a lot. I don't really take issue with the deletions (here and there sure, but this is all so subjective) but the fact that the callouts are coming so fast and free is an issue. I think it boils down more to respect than to to the underlying reason for the deletion and by that I mean I think sometimes Cortex in an effort to be funny disrespects the posters too much. I don't think he really means it as disrespect, come on listen to him, he is all fun and games for the most part, but nevertheless, feelings are hurt. I think leaving a post is usually better than deleting it, unless it is really awful (or obviously double, in which case their is usually little dispute) and when it goes some humor is fine, but with respect. This is a tough, tough job and he is doing it quite well. Despite the occasional hard feelings, I think you have to say he is a big positive contribution to the site. So, with perhaps a bit more empathy on his part in writing deletion reasons I think this becomes moot.

That's what happens when you act all "just one of the guys" most of the time - people forget you have superpowers and then BAM! you wipe them out and they have this dissonant feeling that their chat-buddy could at any instant wipe away any trace that they ever existed. If you want people to remember that you have more power than them, you need to keep a little distance. Plus (and probably more accurately), because cortex hangs out the back here in MeTa so much where things are a little more chatty and ill-defined, so his powers are a little less obvious. Maybe a little mark beside the moderator's names to remind us like, oh, I dunno, a gold star maybe?
