Now I wish I hated steampunk with the righteous fervor of many other MeFites, because a Hellmouth joke would go down pretty smooth here.

You must have some brass ones.

Say "hi" to my nephew, Magpie Killjoy.

Yes, I do, actually. Unfortunately I won't be there as my dirigible is in the shop.

You can't miss me. I'll be the one wearing brass-lined goggles.

Stand tall, Ardship. There will be no shortage of piss-taking in here. I am with you for moral support.

Do post photos.

Reminds me of the time I was up near the stage at a Grateful Dead concert, and the guy behind me was waving his arms and shouting, "Hey you! YOU! In the tie-dye!"

See, I like steampunk in theory, but I'm waiting for the higher skill level end of the trend to expand. But hey, if someone wants to wrap themselves in an old leather jacket covered in tinfoil going "Felicitations! I am Dr. Julius Ethel Rosenberg III", more power to them.

Anyone want to meet at the farthest possible location from Sunnyvale on that date?

(caveat: I'm about to eat some delicious steamed hams)

Damn, I wish I could go, but I probably won't be in town. Please take some pics, and/or post some band links.

yes, and you call them steamed hams, despite the fact that they are obviously grilled.

With a Riddley Walker reference for a user name, Ardship, you can do no wrong in my eyes, but you are a brave, brave person for posting this here.

It's a small photo, but the guy in the Babbage Engine picture here appears to be the very definition of neckbeard.

I was just about to say the same. Could loving that book make me... a little bit steampunk? Crikey. I hope there's not a one drop rule when they start putting the steampunkers in camps.

Hardly surprising that someone with that name would fantasise about a world without electricity...

It's been fictionalized as the Difference Engine

Um, what? That's what babbage called the thing.

S'alright M.C.T.--I find the "your favorite fandom sux"-isms more amusing than anything.

*blushes*

though if I see you, I'll be forced to beat you with a rolled up Hellboy poster.

I think I know the reason this thread got as little snark as it did. When a friend of mine was in middle school a Korean student transferred in. A student by the name of Phuk. Phuk never got any shit from anyone because there was nothing anybody could do to twist around to be funny or rude, it already was.

Similarly: Anyone want to meet at The California Steampunk Convention in Sunnyvale over the Halloween weekend?

There's nothing to do or say. It's already funny.

Disclaimer: Liked The Difference Engine a lot when I read it, same with A Nomad of the Time Streams.

Sunnydale: There's another Hellmouth in Cleveland.

A lot of people get that wrong.

Do the groups of people who go to steampunk conventions and those who (used to?) go to Renaissance fairs overlap much?

That's pretty weird--there's no Korean "F" (or "ph") sound, and I can't even really think of any Korean name that could be Romanized this way. Sure he wasn't from somewhere in SE Asia? Thailand? Cambodia?

This was a story told to me many, many years ago, I probably have misremembered the nationality. PhĂșc is a Vietnamese name.

The PA ren fair is still pretty popular. Turkey legs and all. They have a microbrewery, too. Not that I've ever been.

I'm guessing it's more closely aligned with the anime/cosplay crowd.

There's room for a Venn diagram of ultimate horror here.

Now I'm imagining Furry Steampunks. Cheers for that.

They also cross over with my ultimate hate, people who randomly use the term "Lovecraftian" for things that are barely or not all Lovecraft like.
posted by Artw at 4:08 PM on October 20, 2008

In Rhode Island that's not a problem, Artw, because goddamn everything here is Lovecraftian. Sometimes I think H. P. didn't so much write his stories as just talk to his neighbors about their day and transcribe that. Weird fucking state (which is very much part of why I love it here).

I wonder if it's too late to come up with a Furry Lovecratian Steampunk Cosplayer costume for Hallowe'en... Captain Nemo visits Innsmouth...

Would that involve going as that guy wearing a panther head mask while being eaten* by a giant squid?

* which I mean in the sexual sense.
