plexi's post has images. Is there a "bank" of images we can use, image tags are now allowable, or was this inserted by a privileged person?

Perhaps a feature that lets each user post one and only one <img> per day? Sometimes ya just gotta say it with pictures... and a quota would avoid 4chan-ish cacophony.

it was a joke image from drudge, mentioned in last night's election thread in MetaTalk.

Ah! Thanks.

I should have included "or other".

AFAIK the lack of images is about preventing a kind of malware attack on browsers, not aesthetics.

You know, a bank of images would be a pretty good idea. If you like images on MeFi. Which I usually don't. So I'm just going to cancel this comme

A bank of images. You guys are pretty funny.

And what's with this post? We can embed videos now?
posted by daHIFI at 9:51 AM on November 5, 2008

I'm pretty sure that's actaully just another example of flagrant abuse of administrative power, daHIFI.

Damn. I noticed both those posts and though the long dark night of the image tag ban had ended.
posted by LarryC at 10:42 AM on November 5, 2008

No, it was a mere dalliance in an otherwise unstoppable march toward longerness and increased darkery.

Haven't browsers gotten past the whole being vulnerable to images thing? Or is that something that can't be fixed?
posted by dunkadunc at 11:27 AM on November 5, 2008

The XSRF thing is, as far as I know, a fundamental vulnerability.

Aside from that, though, mefi without images has been a pretty decent place for a while now; as someone who loves and cherishes the power of the <img> tag, I've nonetheless found myself personally pretty strongly inclined toward keeping it off the site.

I'd always assumed the lack of images was a safeguard against basilisks.

Rather than a bank of images, how about one image of Tyra Banks?
posted by box at 1:27 PM on November 5, 2008

Fuck the image tag. How many times do we need to pictures of elephants shitting?

It's those damned sirens. They energized the base.

Honestly, yeah, it's funny that we had such a relatively well-behaved election day & night but had a bumpy and link-happy 5th, but in retrospect I guess that shouldn't be surprising; either way the site was going to be in pretty hardcore catharsis mode.

I've been following this election, and the mefi view of it specifically, more intensely by far than any election previously, and I'm finding that as I stop and look around and try to relax after months of constant vibrating that there's a lot of weird stray energy trying to find some way to dissipate. Multiply that by a few thousand and it's not surprising that we've seen a lot of Oh And Also posts (some of them pretty damned poor) and some high emotions and some spiking silliness.

I'd guess by Friday evening we'll probably be more or less back to normal mefi idle, but we'll see.

Yeah, probably. But don't forget, mods, (and you too, puke & cry) to brace yourselves for what will certainly be an avalanche of posts on the Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh coming up next month.
