Who has the most favorited comment? November 13, 2008 11:09 AM   Subscribe

It's possible to find the most favorited post of all time but is it possible to find the most favorited comment of all time? Or a ranking system that does something similar to the post system (week, 30 days, all time) for comments?

With a little help, it could be this one. Change the course of history, MeFites!

I can't remember which fave lists exist vs. don't, but you can always go plumbing through the Infodump for the definitive answer.

God I love favewhoring MeTa threads.

IIRC, some of the high-count comments include the Woz drop-in (311 last count) and Pastabagel's 'Mr. Rogers as the last earnest man' (567).

Oh, and hermitosis' account suicide comment tends to hover around 500.

I can't say for sure, but I'm fairly certain the most favorited comment of all time would be hermitosis' "If 500 people favorite this comment, I'll disable my account" comment which, at time of writing, stands at 499 favorites.

This right here is how I should start my day every day, with a reminder. A reminder that I've emailed Steve Wozniak and he actually emailed me back. It's better than coffee.

No, that doesn't make me awesome - I'm just some guy. But a very nerdy guy. So nerdy it's almost like being a die-hard Christian receiving a personal visit or phone call from Jesus.

Yeah, Wozniak is just some guy, too. But whether on accident or on purpose he damn near single-handedly reinvented my entire fucking world.

Unf unf unf.

Wasn't it that comment by kittywhiskers about how the particular surface properties of rose petals allow the flowers to retain rainwater when in droplet form?

You're all wrong. It was the recent comment about lineups in the UK. 668 and counting.

This question gets asked every now and then. Usually the comments that are linked rack up a pile more favourites as more people discover them.

Burhanistan - every time I see a reference to that, I audibly wince.

You know, make a little sucking noise through my teeth, in half thrilled embarrassment?

Favoriting is not ranking.

Well, we say that, but if you've got ten comments in a thread, and one of those comments has fifty favourites, then you can extrapolate that at least fifty people particularly enjoyed that comment, as opposed to the other nine comments in the thread, one of which was probably mine and if it was it was probably flagged as noise, so you can do some back-of-a-coaster calculations and determine that the one comment with fifty favourites is "more good" than the other nine comments with no favourites, hence that one comment has effectively been "ranked" as the best comment in the thread.

Certainly it would be hard for people to deny that when they are skimming a particularly large thread, their scrolling finger tends to pause over the comments with x favourites a little longer than over favourite-less comments. Just the same way you'd maybe be flicking through movies/music/games indexes on Metacritic and employing closer scrutiny to 90+ ratings than to the loser ones in red, the latter of which either star Will Ferrell and Cameron Diaz, or were recorded by Bright Eyes & His Fancy-Nancy Band (guest starring Liz Phair), or are collaborations between John Romero and Derek Smart. Man, fuck Derek Smart.

Unless it's a "favorite this 500 times" comment.

Outside, so yummy.
