A Page for Job Seekers, Please November 26, 2008 7:20 AM   Subscribe

Pony request: can we have a place in the Jobs section for "Job Wanted" posts, please?

I asked a mod if it was OK to put a job-seeking post on the Jobs page and they said no, so can we have a dedicated section for job hunting? I'm sure I'm not the only MeFite who's been laid off recently, and this seems like a great place for networking. Off the top of my head I can't think of any local MeFites who work in my industry, but you must be out there somewhere!

Seconded.

For networking? Search askme for question in your field. The person with the best answer will probably work in your field too.

Is it okay to use the Jobs section for on-off type projects? "I need a bookbinder to bind this PDF, etc. Pay is $100 + cost" or something like that? Is that okay?

I think that is OK, Pastabagel. I don't see why assignments can't be posted.

The only problem I see with this is the section getting overcrowded, i.e. way more people looking for jobs than people offering them.

My experience in JobsMe has been the opposite. I've never received a single resume in response to a posting. Conclusion: No one on MetaFilter is looking for a job.

I always see jobs that I'd love to apply for and figure people realize I'm an incredible internet jackass and wouldn't hire me, regardless of my sparkling wit, reasonable nature and prowess as a programmer.

hah, I went over to jobs, and my coworker popped over my shoulder: "HEY WATCHA GOT THERE A JOB BOARD???".

That reminds meā€¦ Back to trawling craigslist for new job opportunitiesā€¦ (Not fired yet, but never can tell).

Ahahah. I've applied to a good number of gigs on Jobs, and often within half a day of posting, and usually get "Oh thanks, but the job has been filled and it's actually done now, so uh, bye."

We considered this at the start of Jobs, but with the impending downturn, maybe we should do something like this. I just have to think through all the nefarious ways jerky spammers could use it, and make sure it's not a target for more of that kind of junk.

mathowie, maybe limiting contact through memail would be a good place to start?

Conclusion: No one on MetaFilter is looking for a job.

It looks like there are something like 10 jobs for NYC and 10 jobs over the whole rest of the planet. Does anyone even use this thing?

I would like to see this feature added to Jobs.

Alternately, how about the ability to upload a C.V./resume much like we can upload a user picture? Option on user profile page: Display Resume? oY oN

It would get overrun.

Posting resumes sounds like heading down the road to duplicating LinkedIn features. You can link to a LinkedIn profile from your MeFi profile. And you can view everyone with a LinkedIn link. I wonder if there's some way to use this existing system and maybe add a way to say, "I'm looking for work now in [my industry]. See my resume on LinkedIn."

It would be nice if this could be made to work - somehow.

No one answered my posting, entitled: "Wanted: Bad-ass motorcycle guy."

pb: maybe jobs get tagged, and users have a tag pool they're interested in?

Why not post job the mefite is looking for in "Hiremata"? The automatic link of the poster's nick would take any interested party to his/her user page where a resume could be posted. If Mr. Employer is not a mefite and can't see the resume, the job seeker might want to post a throwaway email address for contact.

If Mr. Employer is not a mefite and can't see the resume, the job seeker is absolutely compelled to post a throwaway email address for contact.

I think mathowie should just hire everybody as admins. After all, he's paying cortex now, what's another 30,000 employees?
posted by jacalata at 12:37 AM on November 27, 2008 [1 favorite]

Clearly, adding 30,000 new employees to the payroll would not strain the system short term. However, the $300,000,000 (US) in total year end bonuses might require the infusement of government funds in addition to long term pension guarantees ...

Some poor confused bastard just signed up and posted that he was looking for a job in an AskMe thread from April about, you know, trying to get that sort of job.
