Rebel Meet up! December 29, 2008 4:03 PM   Subscribe

The Chicago cabal* has given its blessing on a separate northside Meetup! So what say, Chicago northsiders? Any night but Wednesday, Tommy Nevins? Prairie Moon? I don't hang out in bars (--cough--), so I'm open to suggestions. *TINC

Damn, since I started this, I'm going to have to go.

Do they serve alcohol in Evanston?
posted by lee at 5:46 PM on December 29, 2008

They do indeed now serve alcohol in Evanston, and incredibly you can even buy packaged alcohol. A sure sign of the coming apocalypse. However, the thread is open to alternative north side locations, for instance, there's the Fireside on Ravenswood around Bryn Mawr, something in Skokie (does Skokie have a nightlife? There's a scary thought-- Skokie nightlife).

I submit The Old Town Ale House near Wells and North. We can check out the naked Sarah Palin and Blago paintings.

Much further north than that and I may pass.

On the upside I can wear my North Face jacket and go around saying, "Hey, look at me! I'm on the northside! I'm going to go shout racial slurs at the women at Wiener Circle.

Man, I hate those Weiner Circle jerks.

I was joking about Evanston, but they are still there!

The Fireside is awsome.

Tommy Nevins holds memories of terrible food and annoying company for me. But if the meetup is somewhere that close to me without being that place, I'd have little excuse not to go. (Of course, I could still worm my way out, I'm sure.) Wednesdays and Thursdays aren't great, but I could make it late.

I remember Prairie Moon being OK. Some diner-type place would be cool with me, too.

Is this an Evanstan meetup or a Chicago meetup?

Because if it's Evanstan...

FUCK YOU ALL.

I vote for Wrigleyville North. If you've never been there, you've gotta check it out. It's pretty much as dive as you can get. They don't have food, but there's mexican next door and they let you bring it in. They'll also let you have food delivered. On the weekends they have a band full of old vietnam vets playing country and blues standards. Pimpin'

Any night's fine by me, but I'm out of town till the 20th for winter break. So try not to have too much fun before then.

Man, I hate those Weiner Circle jerks.

...and yet, if we were to kill them, we would be the ones sent to prison! Befuddling.

Well, I start out in Evanston, and since my kids will tell you that dragging my sorry unsociable ass out of the house takes unusual fortitude, I focused on there. But as long as it's not much further south than Irving, I'm good, and then we can call it a Chicago meet up for the people who are scared of Evanston. ;)

I like the idea of Fireside; easier to park than Wrigleyville. What about Monday or Tuesday Jan 12 or 13? I have no idea what time these things get going, but I'm off work at 6 both days, in Winnetka (wfrgms, if you think Evanston's a drag, try Winnetka some time).

Other far north side suggestions:

Moody's (You may think it's only for summers and the beer garden, but it's actually really cozy and neat in the winter too. They have fun hot beverages on the menu.)

Old St. Andrew's

T's

Charlie's Ale House (The one in Andersonville, not Navy Pier obv.)

Carol's Pub

Simon's (It's Glogg season!)

Firehouse is good too.

I'd like to suggest something far, far more North-side.

How about Milwaukee?

wfrgms, quit yer whining and meet us at the Billy Goat, then.
posted by eamondaly at 8:42 AM on December 30, 2008 [1 favorite]

I don't want to drag you in any particular direction, because I am not that far from the Billy Goat (but the whole Wednesday night thing, always an issue), but I may be in. Now that I have been to a meetup (in NOLA,tho) I am ready to take on another. And I do get up to the Hopleaf for the BookSlut readings.
Hey, love Milwaukee, too!
posted by readery at 9:01 AM on December 30, 2008

No love for the NW suburbs, huh? In any case, it's probably easier for me to get to Milwaukee than Evanston, so I'll agree with quin.
posted by desjardins at 11:05 AM on December 30, 2008

I'm about halfway between Milwaukee and Chicago but Milwaukee would probably be easier for me too.

Backroom at T's seems like it would work well...though I've never actually been to a meetup, I can't say for certain...but oh I've imagined them.
posted by MCMikeNamara at 12:30 PM on December 30, 2008

I'm for Moody's (great idea) or Fireside. Date? time? How does this work? Since I started the thread am I in some way responsible? (shit)
posted by nax at 4:22 PM on December 30, 2008

Backroom at T's is a good call, McMike.
posted by applemeat at 6:46 PM on December 30, 2008

Wait.... what sort of meetup thread is this anyways? This is NOTHING LIKE ICELAND!
posted by Bageena at 7:54 PM on December 30, 2008

How about Monday, January 12, Moody's Pub. I don't know the best time so someone add that.
posted by nax at 5:22 AM on January 1, 2009

um, hello? anybody out there?
posted by nax at 12:15 PM on January 2, 2009

Well, since I live about 2 blocks away I can probably be there by 5:30 or so... In my experience most other meetups start a bit later than that, but I also imagine this won't necessarily be the usual Billy Goat crew so who knows?
posted by misskaz at 2:39 PM on January 2, 2009

I'm interested. I can never make it down to the Goat, but burgers and brews by the (one of many) fireplaces at Moody's? I could be in for that.
posted by jeanmari at 2:55 PM on January 2, 2009

Monday.

I don't have to get up at 0400 for a flight the next day.

Sold!
posted by eriko at 8:18 PM on January 2, 2009

Okay, Monday January 12, let's call it 6:30 to 7 start, Moody's Pub. I don't know how to get this to show up in the sidebar. Anyone?

Whoah! It's there! MetaTalk magic!

Looks like I'll be missing out on both Chicago meetups this month. I'm in Israel until the 19th. If we try and get a northside meet going again next month, I'm in.

Have fun!

After 9 days away from the intarwebs, I had to declare MeFi bankruptcy. Somehow, I caught this, which is great, because I've been secretly hoping for a North Side meetup for quite some time. I'm going to try to make both of them!
posted by SpiffyRob at 8:57 AM on January 5, 2009

I have been saying for the past year I'd go to a meet-up, yet never seem to be able to make it. Moody's is a few blocks from my apartment. Hmmmm....

I might just have to try harder this time to go.
posted by Windigo at 7:01 AM on January 6, 2009

I was going to join tonight's meet-up, but it turns out there are conflicting events among my internet friends! So I'm going to the Hideout to eat soup tonight and then I expect to make the Moody's meetup on Monday.

This is on my way home from work now. I just may stop by!

I've got derby practice that night, but if any of the power drinkers end up at Cafe Bong ("You can't go wrong at the Bong") for karaoke around 10, I'll buy a round.
posted by eamondaly at 1:28 PM on January 8, 2009

I was all set to attend this one until I noticed that I have opera tickets for the 12th.

So I miss *both* January meetups--I lose!
posted by crush-onastick at 12:03 PM on January 10, 2009

Who goes to the opera on Mondays? I had no idea they were open.
posted by desjardins at 9:53 AM on January 12, 2009

Assuming at least one person chimes in to confirm attendance, I'll be showing up at 7pm.
posted by veggieboy at 10:56 AM on January 12, 2009

I'm gonna punk out for tonight. I'm already exhausted and I've got some things to do. Bleurg. Hopefully this one isn't a bust so there'll be a "next time" for me to show up for.
posted by adamdschneider at 1:34 PM on January 12, 2009

I'm not in the mood to cook tonight so my husband and I will probably stop by for burgers. Nax, will you have signage or something to make it clear This Is the MetaFilter Nerd Table?
posted by misskaz at 2:20 PM on January 12, 2009

OK. . . leaving now. Should take me about 45m to get there.
posted by veggieboy at 4:22 PM on January 12, 2009

I would love to meet you all but I need a fair amount of momentum to get my car into my alley as it is (damn sloppy snowplowing!), so with blizzard warnings, I'm going to chicken out. Have a drink for me and drive safe!
posted by readery at 4:44 PM on January 12, 2009

Alas, work has me trapped. I was trying to get myself up and get out there, but.
