Birmingham, Alabama meet-up in March?
(Mini-Meetup this Week!)
I've been meaning to post about an Alabama meet-up for a while - so what do you think? I'm thinking the lion days of March...
Also, there will be a mini-meet-up in Birmingham this Thursday the 22nd of January at 8:00 pm:
BitterOldPunk and I will be swapping spectacular/infamous Birmingham crime stories (axe murder gangs in the twenties; closeted/homicidal/handy-with-a-knife Birmingham police officers in the seventies; etc.) over drinks and food.
All are welcome.

Hey, cinemafiend and BOP! I'm in the 'ham! I'm down! Thing is, the mini-meetup on Thursday is, unfortunately, no-go for me, due to prior commitment. And your suggestion for March is also NG for me, cause I'll be back in Tokyo by then. SO... howsabout something in between? For example:
Any way to make the mini-meetup on Southside happen tomorrow or Wednesday (20 or 21)?
Failing that, could y'all see getting together on Feb.2 or 3? I know those are Mondays and Tuesdays, which might not be optimum... Saturday Jan. 31st might be OK, too.
I just can't believe what a crazy coincidence it is that I'm here now and you called a meetup. Wow!

I'd actually rather be out on a weeknight -- weekends are for amateurs. My schedule is flexible -- pretty much any day after 7 PM is fine.
Though it now occurs to me that I do know of two other MeFites who'll be in town by Feb. 9. Hmmm.

BOP, I'll be here til Feb.5, but with some side trips here and there before departure.
In my comment upthread I mentioned Wednesday availability (day after tomorrow), but that's now out. I'm gonna lean heavily on pressuring you 'hamians into meeting up on Feb. 2 or 3. Whaddaya say? Seems like BOP is pretty open... cinemafiend, how are you on one of those days?

Let's move it all to Marty's and meet there on Feb 3 around 8 PM.
If I go to Marty's twice in rapid succession it frightens the help and alarms the management.

Aw, hell, nola, it'd be GREAT if you could make it. I know I made some noise awhile back about trying to get up your way on this visit, but it wasn't in the cards for this time around. We'll surely have at least one drink in your honor!

Also: someone bring a camera. My meet-up budget does not include flying DaShiv in. And unlike many MeFites, I do NOT have a camera.

I'm guessing Marty's is going to have a better selection of beers than what I can get at the bars here in Leeds, so suggestions will be welcome if I show up.

Marty's is a dive, which is why I love it so. Their beer selection is reasonably broad, but hardly great. Plus -- no draft beer (they might have Bud Light or something, I dunno).
But it's a great place to snag a bottle of Newcastle and a cheeseburger.
In fact, that's the entirety of Marty's menu: cheeseburgers.
Hope no one attending the meet-up is a vegetarian. If so, we can always go up the road to that Thai place near the fountain. They're pretty good.
I suggested Marty's because it's one of the few bars that doesn't blare music so loudly you hafta shout to be heard across the table, it'll be dead at 8 PM (it only starts filling up after midnight), smokers like me can indulge our filthy habit anywhere on the premises, and all the bartenders and bouncers know me.
Hmmm. Just checked their website and they don't start serving food until 11 PM. That can't be right. I could swear I've eaten there way earlier than that.
Well, we can start there and move elsewhere. There's only about a dozen bars and restaurants within walking distance.

Oh, and: Marty's doesn't take plastic, but they have one of those charge-you-an-arm-and-a-leg ATMs.

Thanks, BOP, for the Marty's info. No loud blaring music is a big big plus. An extra added plus, as we say.
I'm not veggie, and cheeseburgers are fine by me, but then again, if they don't start doing food til 11, then food is a bit of a non-issue. I'll probably get to Marty's with some sort of dinner already in me anyway, but, like you say, moving elsewhere is always an option. Flexibility is always a good thing!

I can vouch for the fact that cinemafiend is a fine fellow. Now, that calendar-fuckup BitterOldPunk, I don't know about him, though... and be warned, if you do go to Marty's, you WILL smell like tobacco for the next three days.
