Quoting capabilities for MeFi mail? February 5, 2009 12:50 PM   Subscribe

Quoting capabilities for MeFi mail? Yeah, I know, it's not meant to be a full-fledged mail client, but it's annoying when someone responds to something you said and you have to go back to your sent folder to remember what the heck it was.

Oddly enough, I was thinking the same thing.

It's not meant to be a full-fledged mail client, is the thing. It's possible to manually quote, so if you're exchanging email with someone who is game, you can always get that going with them. But barring that, it's one of those "if you need a more featured email client, move the conversation to an actual email client" situations.

I had a full-fledged male client once. Those were dark days.

I WONDER WHY.

Could the memail exchanges be made threaded or something?

Could I have a real pony? I'm so hungry.

I think this goes into the "not going to happen, sorry" category. We really want MeFiMail to be a basic messaging service for the site so people can get in touch about some little issue. Any real back and forth stuff needs to be ported to Real Live Mail.

When I reply to MeMail, I see the replied-to email right above the composition box. I can easily cut & paste applicable text from one to the other.

Any chance of being able to put hyperlinks in MeMail?

What not_on_display said.

EarBucket: Paste the address in on its own line. It will become a link. ... which it says on the Compose a Message page. Hi! I'm Caaaaptain Obvious!

Well, could the type be made larger, by default? Never understood why it's so small.

BB, I can't tell if you're joking or not, the text looks like whatever "normal" sized is on my machine. Can you send a screenshot?

I'm not joking, it really does look smaller. I'll send a screenshot.

It's possible to manually quote

As there's no HTML support, it is cumbersome to manually quote, and the results are difficult for the writer and reader to parse, for anything more than a rudimentary one-line response. Just one observation.

No argument there, just saying that if it comes to the point of needing to shoehorn in functionality that we're not likely to support, it's doable. I very rarely do anything like nested quoting in mefimail either, and find it cumbersome when I do. But that's not the sort of thing I use mefimail for; I divert to email for those conversations.

So, uh, threaded conversations are out?

This is a site that doesn't even have quoting for comments!

Also note that you can send Mefi Mail to your email automatically. Just go to your profile, click "Edit Profile" and scroll down to these options:
Display email to other members? :
Forward MeFi Mail to email? :
Opt-out of MeFi Mail reminders? :
Opt-out of MeFi Mail? :
and check the "Forward Mefi Mail to email" option. If you sent up a folder and mail rule, it can automatically be thrown in a folder.

See, no odd spacing with blockquotes

yeah, I get memail in my gmail, but I can't reply to that. I have to come back here.

EarBucket: "Any chance of being able to put hyperlinks in MeMail?"

Seconded! Bold, italics, blockquotes, etc., are largely flourishes that can be spared in a basic message (and advanced mail features are better left to a full client) but hyperlinks are different in that they tie content to specific words. The lack of it makes it difficult to use links clearly and effectively, or to quote material that already has them. I've had to butcher more than one message in the past to accommodate the lack of hypertext (Footnotes? Stopping a sentence midway to put a URL on its own line? etc.). And I don't even use MeMail that often.

If there's one feature MeMail needs, it's hyperlinks.

I'd also to have a MeWebServer so I can make MeWebPages on top of which I will implement a MeBlogosphere.
