Nice work Flapjax! (if that *is* your real name).

Wait, I thought we hated BoingBoing here. Doesn't this mean we have to stone him?

I can never keep up with this stuff.

Hooray for flapjax! (Surgeon general's warning: having flapjax at midnight may give you bad dreams.)

Caduceus - Can't you see?! They're trying to drive us apart!

Congrats, flapjax!

"his new album, Roomful of Ghosts, which has a blog too."

His album keeps a log of interesting sites it's browsed over the course of the day, which it then posts to the web?

Congratulations! He's should be considered part of the Mefi staff with the work he does in Music. Maybe a title like "Official Music Ambassador," and we could give him, like, diplomatic immunity, and a seat on the UN council.

Then came the hypothetical hurdy gurdy man,
Singing songs of ghosts.

He looks kind of old to be a hipster.

Congrats, flapjax.

He looks kind of old to be a hipster.

But young to be a hippie or a hepcat. And just the right age for a hoopy frood. So it balances out.

what? we need BoringBoring to validate flapjax's awesomeness?!??

see? they can't even get their facts right!

Congrats flapjax. Hope the album goes well.

Whenever he posts anything, even if it is something I think that I will have no interest in at all, I always have a look. Can't think of many other MeFites I would say that about.

Hey y'all, and greetings from an Atlanta hotel room, where I've just woken up. Catching an early morning flight back home to Tokyo today, and waking to this thread was a most agreeable start to my long travel day. Thank you all for these comments, this humble hoopy frood is very honored!

Awesome (and entertaining) review - I don't know who Mark Dery is, but if he likes flapjax he can't be too shabby. Congrats!!

Ha. I liked him before he was a MeFite. It's just amazing to me that he once played with Tom Cora. Congrats, flapjax; it's always great to have a new baby in the world.

Fun fact: Superchunk was originally called Chunk but had to change their name because flapjax had already taken it.

I was under the impression being old was cool...wait, then what did I get old for?

Very cool, Flapjacks.
I like what I've heard. Now you have to have a world wide tour.

We have always been at war with flapjax.

And flapjax is at war with the airlines. Well, not war, exactly, but... my flight from Atlanta to Detroit was delayed due to mechanical problems, which meant that I wouldn't have made my connection to Japan. They put me and the family in a hotel. We're watching Animal Planet.

That is all.

Yeah, I remember when I learned that flapjax at midnite was Samm Bennett and I was all like OMIGOD YOU'RE SAMM BENNETT and he was all like I CANNOT TELL A LIE I AM SAMM BENNETT and I was all like HOLYMOLY YOU'RE GEORGE WASHINGTON TOO and he was all like I AM AND BENJAMIN FRANKLIN WAS NOTHING BUT A WANTWIT AND A SARCAST AND AN OYSTERWENCHFORNICATOR AND HE'S GODDAMN ON THE HUNDRED DOLLAR BILL WHILE I LANGUISH ON THE ONE WHAT THE DOUCHE DEPARTMENT OF THE TREASURY and I was all like uh... what and then he started talking about his pig.

True story.

Being old *is* cool -- it's those hipsters who are dubious.

OTOH, hoopy froods are where it's at, granddaddy-o.
posted by PeterMcDermott at 12:28 AM on February 13, 2009

everything i've heard from this cd so far is way beyond good. imagine what kind of stuff he'll turn out when he gets old!
posted by msconduct at 5:26 AM on February 13, 2009

Well hot damned. In my abundant naivete I had only identified flapjax as a really wonderful scholar of music who constructed thoughtful, mesmerizing posts on musical topics. Now I find he's also best known as a mainstay of the 1980s New York avant garde music scene (!).

Good giggity!
posted by cavalier at 1:07 PM on February 13, 2009

Thanks for the heads-up indeed, gen. I quickly figured out that flapjax was awesome (both posting- and music-wise) back in 2006 when he started showing up here. But I never imagined he could play the pig!

Boing Boing, in its own way, is a perfect description of what he does best. Boing boing, tingle tangle, boing boing, mingle mangle. Scrip scrape, ting tang, boing boing, boom chicky boom. Repeat.

p.s. Speaking of Chunk, this fantastic song is hard to get out of your head once it's in there. It's my favorite song about a city in Alabam’ — although Randy Newman's Birmingham (by another cool old guy) is also not so bad.
