Problems selecting EST time zone March 7, 2009 7:59 AM   Subscribe

Why can't I set my timezone to -5 (EST)? It's not an option in the drop-down menu.

the setting in the preference is an offset to the server time, not a timezone.

I believe the dropdown is the offset from native server (PST) time, not from GMT. So if you want EST, you should set it to +3.

Even if the dropdown was an offset from UTC, the number you wanted would change tomorrow.

Simple, there is no EST. It's all a dream.

Have you not seen Thursday? Time does not exist. It is an emergent property based on the collapse of the would know that probability of independent events into the probability of a series of events. But the most likely probability is that you will indulge your petty illusion.

If you want Hammer Time, set to +1.

Can I make a drunken MeTa thread tonight about how I was watching the clock, and it went from 1:59 am to 3:00 am and how I think this is a sign of the coming apocalypse and how that's the last post you'll ever see from me as I'll be hiding in my bunker with a hundred thousand cans of SPAM, a bed made from Twinkies, and a shotgun with a couple thousand rounds of ammunition?

'Cause I'd sure like to.

Speaking of Why...Why is the 'Y' in "You tell me what they have in common" not part of the link to the McNasty thread on the MeFi sidebar? That's what I want to know.

I have to say that I love living in the same timezone as the MeFi server. It makes dealing with these esoteric time issues so much easier than before.

Highly recommended for any truly dedicated MeFite.

Eleven. Eleven. It's not even funny. Time zones? That's ridiculous.

Imagine the plight of poor Arizona. Through no fault of their own, tomorrow they will move from a -2 to a -3 offset from the east coast, and from a +1 to 0 from the west coast. No wonder it's so frickin' hot in Phoenix.

And these guys are from England and who gives a shit?

Plus one for the Time Zones reference, minus several million for stealing my line.

I thought EST went out with hot tubs and big gold medallions.

Yes, that's an obscure Bloom County joke.

"EST" is therefore a complete misnomer. There is not, nor has there ever been, anything 'standard' about Eastern Time.

But try telling that to the people at the LSAT when you've just been charged a $70 'late fee' that's charges when you register on or after the fifteen when you registered at 10:30 pm on the fourteenth. They won't listen. Not even when you explain patiently that it says nowhere on their web site that Eastern Time is the standard of choice. "Sir," they'll say, "everyone knows that Eastern Time is the Standard. Bullshit!

That's a joke, right koeselitz? You do understand why EST is called Eastern Standard Time, just like Central Standard Time, Mountain Standard Time, and Pacific Standard Time?

AH-- yes. Eh - a joke.

Yes, it's because that's what time it is about one-third of the time.
