When you edit your profile, you get a nice free-form field for your “Relationship Status”. On your profile, it is listed as “Status”. (All other fields are described with identical language on both pages.)This has driven my pedantic self nuts for ages. Would it be possible to update the “edit profile” page so that it just asks for “Status”? Or, if we want to be wordy, for your “Status (Personal/Relationship/Whatever)”?
This is a thread for the "social links" sections of people's profiles. Let's make this a single thread for the mods, to: (a) report changed social link URL formats, (b) "social link" services that have gone altogether and (c) throw in any ideas of popular or up-and-coming services that you'd like to see there and that have a publicly accessible URL format for people's profiles. We're celebrating the launch of mltshp by adding it to the Social Apps options on profile pages (and deprecating mlkshk). While we're at it, we're also adding Ravelry support finally. Details inside! [more inside]
We've decided to move forward on an idea that's come up in MetaTalk previously: adding an explicit spot for pronouns on MeFi user profile pages. It's a small change: we've tweaked the free-form "Gender" field to "Gender and/or pronouns". [more inside]
Everyone is most likely familiar with the Profile page's "About" section explanatory text: "What's the deal with your nickname? How did you get it? If your nickname is self-explanatory, then tell everyone when you first started using the internet, and what was the first thing that made you say 'wow, this isn't just a place for freaks after all?' Was it a website? Was it an email from a long-lost friend? Go on, spill it.' I am curious if anybody's user name actually WAS inspired by an email from a long-lost friend. [more inside]
In an article published by the Guardian's executive editor for audience today, MetaFilter is mentioned in the same breath as Facebook and Twitter as an example of a website which 'provide[s] spaces for different kinds of communities to gather', despite having only a fraction of the membership and the traffic of those two sites. This is just the most recent example of how MetaFilter seems to me to be enjoying a greater public profile as of late. Is this so (or am I just imagining it)? If so, why? Can the staff or other users shed any light?
We’re rolling out a couple of new profile preferences options today: the ability to make the “Contributions” and “Social” segments of your profile page visible only to logged-in members, and the ability to enter your geographic coordinates but have them not be visible to anyone else. Come on in for some details! [more inside]
Today we added the ability to make an IRL event regional so that IRL alerts for the event go out to a wider audience. And now in addition to letting us know what distance you consider nearby, you can let us know what distance you consider regional. [more inside]
Would it be possible to have a link to the profile pages of the members in the chat room? Perhaps as an additional choice when you right-click their name from the list on the righthand sidebar? (alongside "ignore" and "private chat") [more inside]
Would it be possible to put a place for preferred pronouns in the profile? [more inside]
I have my preferences set to open links in a new window, but if I click on a user's website from their Profile page, the site opens in the same window. Is it possible to get those links to act like other external links? Is there a downside to changing it that I'm not seeing?
Metafilter as a general policy does not consider offsite behavior from the moderator perspective unless it is something ridiculously egregious. If you want to talk trash on a user here over on Reddit, more power to you. I think that's kind of jerky if you make a habit out of it, but whatever. People need an outlet. This is not in general a bad policy at all. I like that I can be more free wheeling with my commentary elsewhere without it potentially souring my relationship with this community. So in general, there is a firewall between offsite and onsite behavior and the potential for mod involvement. We've had debates about to what degree that should be the case in the past, but I think the consensus has been pretty clear that this is the right way to go so I don't really want to re-fight that battle. So I was on my profile page, and accidentally hit the "Pin It" button on my browser. The Pinterest window that popped up suggested just one rather surprising image to pin. [more inside]
The number of times I've intentionally tapped the profile link of a thread poster on my phone: 0. The number of times I've accidentally tapped the profile link of a thread poster on my phone: an embarrassing amount, uncountable in modern number theory. Can we do something about that? [more inside]
Someone suggested in the foreign language thread on the Blue that we have a Duolingo username exchange thread, so I thought I'd bell the cat. [more inside]
MeFi cyclists/runners: your Strava account, if you have one, is now linkable in the "Also On:" section of your profile. In this same update it looks like pb has also added: Steepster, Newsblur, Hacker News, ResearcherID, ResearchGate, and eBay (any others, pb?). Related link: MeFi Social Explorer (for finding other users with profiles on growing list of linkable communities). [more inside]
In this thread, there was discussion of creating a Goodreads widget, but nothing ever came of it. Is it still possible? [more inside]
It has lately come to my attention that there are several people here who are interested in creating and consuming fanworks. How would the mods - and the community at large - feel about adding an Archive of Our Own widget to the Social Apps part of the profile? They seem to exist at least to some extent because they are available on Dreamwidth (see my profile).
Is it time to update the "About" section of the Profile pages?
What's the deal with your nickname? How did you get it? If your nickname is self-explanatory, then tell everyone when you first started using the internet, and what was the first thing that made you say "wow, this isn't just a place for freaks after all?" Was it a website? Was it an email from a long-lost friend? Go on, spill it.Certainly we oldsters can remember the advent of the internet, and there was a time when we may have thought it was for freaks. But for many you may as well ask "When did you first use electricity?" [more inside]
This is just a PSA to remind you that we use the email you have attached to your account to answer contact emails from you (unless you change it manually in the email field on the contact page), and sometimes to get in touch with you if there is a problem with a post or comment, so please make sure that it is a working address. You can change or update your email in your profile preferences under "Contact Preferences," as well as choose whether you want it to be visible to other users, and if you want Mefi mail forwarded to your email. Is the Twitter section of the personal profiles broken for everyone, or just me? If it's for everyone, maybe the time has come to eliminate it rather than try to keep it working.
Seeing the thread on letterpress, I thought to seek out other MeFites and also let them know how to find me in GameCenter. We have a thread here about this, but I would like to request a pony in the form of adding GameCenter to the Social Apps section of the user profile. Please?
Small feature request: Can we have B, I and Link buttons in the Personal Info portion of the Edit Profile Page? It would make it slightly easier to edit that section.
Super minor pony request: the option to add a This Is My Jam updating widget to profiles? [more inside]
Is there a good collection of recent interesting/informative mefite profiles? If not can you all suggest some to me? [more inside]

Please make profile pictures bigger when clicked. [more inside]
Simple post: Metafilter achievements/badges/Mefi medals would be amusing. Is there any likelihood they'll ever happen/ideas on what people would like? [more inside]

If you've changed the default fonts on your profile, what have you changed them to? [more inside]
I'm curious as to when/why the 'I was a backtagging superstar!' was removed from profiles.

What are some really cool mefite profiles? [more inside]
The LibraryThing widget is pulling random books from your LibraryThing account. Since Twitter and Last.fm and many of the others seem to default to most recent, it seems like the LibraryThing widget should pull your most recent books too, just to be consistent.
Is it (or would it be) possible for users to share our correct ages on our profiles without displaying our entire dates of birth there? [more inside]
Would it be possible to add Mlkshk to the list of social apps we can add to our profiles? No rush, obvs. Thank you in advance for looking at this shaken, but not stirred pony!
Could we please add tumblr to the list of social app links that we can display on our profiles? tia
Is there anyway we can add Rotten Tomatoes to the list of social apps on our profiles?
Low-priority pony: mobile stylesheet for profile pages? [more inside]
Searched high and low, and couldn't find it on MeTa or the Wiki: Is there a list of all PRX user profiles linked to MeFi profiles, like there is for recent tweets by MeFites or lists for some of the other social apps?
Would it be possible to make the "location" section a link to a list of MeFites nearby? [more inside]
Request: Would it be possible to add Smugmug to the profile "also on" list?
It's a little ironic that my MeFi post on the supposed Julian Assange OkCupid profile has been censored. [more inside]
I like to know things. I like to know things about people. I especially like to know things about people who I interact with online. It bums me right out that it seems so few newer members take the time, or wish to, fill out anything in their profile. Is there any way to encourage this? [more inside]
Why isn't "status" an open text field, too? [more inside]
It's fascinating that the decision by the developers of Diaspora, the ("open" but currently in closed alpha) Facebook alternative to make "Gender" a text field got a lot of attention (mostly on Twitter), a lot of it rather negative. Considering that MetaFilter has always done that. (I pointed it out to them) [more inside]
deezil has an excellent spyware removal/virus removal guide in his profile. Are there other members with similarly useful content?
