Seattle Meetup, with sun and booze April 21, 2009 10:13 AM   Subscribe

Seattleites: rtha and gingerbeer are going to be in town the weekend of May 9th. How about we have a meetup?

I'd be up to bring them to the Twilight Exit at some point. Or possibly taking over the Cal Anderson chess tables.

Crap. Second meetup in a row where I have opera tix. I could be up for something during the day. I got some showing off to do.

I just had those show up on my flickr stream. Congratulations!

If the weather holds, I was thinking we could do something in cal anderson park during the day (also it is close to Rancho Bravo, which I documented here). I've been tempted by the giant chess boards, along with some board games and other such outdoorsy type things.

Wooo! Seattle meetup! I've heard that Seattle mefites are pretty cool. Is it true?
posted by rtha at 10:32 AM on April 21, 2009

Also, May 9th or 10th is what I had in mind, in case folks already have plans for that Saturday (silly sidebar not letting me pick a range of days).

Oh yeah! And congrats, Slarty!

Yay meetup. I still haven't been to Rancho Bravo.

I suggest the big table at Oddfellows which is right off Cal Anderson and a hop/step/jump from Rancho Bravo. One downside is that Oddfellows' food is overpriced, but last time I was there they had Oly on tap. Yes, Oly. On TAP. For $2, I think.

Ravi is darling! Happiness to the Bartfasts.

Congratulations, SB! That is one adorable baby, all right.

And I would vote enthusiastically for a daytime meetup, since I have to drive up from Olympia, but either way I will likely be there.

Sounds like fun.

Meetup! Meetup! Meetup! And this time I'll try to actually come! Daytime sounds good.

And congratulations on Slarty Jr!

My calendar is clear after 6:00, I haven't made one of these since the four top at Grinders sandwich place in Shoreline.

What a sweetheart, Slarty! Congratulations!

As far as the meetup goes, I agree that the Twilight Exit would be a great venue. It's usually pretty empty during the day, plus they have deep-fried bacon.*

I'm also very fond of The Hideout, though the food offerings there are fairly limited. It can get a little crowded at night, but during the day it stays pretty empty.

But regardless of where or when folks decide to get together, I'm in.

*I mention the bacon for informational purposes only; I can neither endorse nor discourage the eating of same.)

> plus they have deep-fried bacon.

I can whole (clogged) heartily endorse the chicken fried bacon. You can order your BLT to be made with it.

How is it that I've lived in Seattle this long and never heard of deep friend bacon? My inner glutton is weeping.
posted by Smarson at 2:20 PM on April 21, 2009

Bacon is one of my deepest friends.

Kat Allison, could we carpool? I too am coming from Olympia, and would love to finally get to a mefi meetup! (Plus dw is always bugging me about how I never come to Seattle.) And yes, a daytime thing on Saturday is definitely better for making the long trip northwards. :)

unless something suddenly comes up, I will probably go. Daytime would be preferable.

epersonae: Sure thing! My e-mail's in my profile, so just drop me a line once the date gets settled.

Because a meetup with out of towners isn't a true meetup until there is a tour of awesomeness, how about this:

Saturday, 2pm at South Cal Anderson Field (near Oddfellows / Ranch Bravo). If it is nice, we can get beverages and burritos and go sit in the park. If it is bad weather, we can just go to oddfellows.

But wait, that isn't the whole thing!

For people interested in adventuring on, we would move over to the Twilight Exit for dinner and more drinking, before soldiering on to other parts of Seattle yet unknown. Along with bacon, they also serve tater tots.

(This is actually part of my general plan of events to drag rtha and gbeer to)

I probably won't be able to make the early part but might be able to join y'all later. Is there anyone who's going who could MeMail me their phone number?
posted by grouse at 1:30 PM on April 22, 2009

grouse- check your memail.

For anyone else who will want to catch up with us later, shoot me a memail and I'll give you my cell, i figure with these two crazy californians in tow, we will be hanging out all over capitol hill as the evening progresses.

You people are not making it easy to ignore this one are you? I have standing saturday plans, but I just may be able to squeeze this in. Undecided!

This is sounding awesomer by the minute. Seattle, mefites, beer, and taters - what more could you ask for?
posted by rtha at 4:39 PM on April 22, 2009

I'm in!

No way. That whole thing sounds awful. Well, except for the beer, and the mefites, and the park, and the bar.... Okay, fine. I'll be there.
posted by gingerbeer at 9:08 PM on April 23, 2009

This has the potential to be awesome, especially with the taters. Count me as Potentially In.

Where were the burritos from?
posted by spinifex23 at 12:02 PM on April 24, 2009

Rancho Bravo, an honest to goodness taco truck that has taken up occupancy inside the old KFC across from Oddfellows (and Cal Anderson park). $4 or so for a burrito.
posted by mrzarquon at 12:30 PM on April 24, 2009

My life just got a whole lot shinier. Thanks! I love taco trucks, and it's about time Capitol Hill got some real Mexican street food!
posted by spinifex23 at 12:43 AM on April 25, 2009

Anyone who wants to show up 8 days early for this MeFi shindig will get a delightful treat: a free performance by my friends' awesome circus arts troupe. I hope it's okay to pitch this here. They're assembling a giant freestanding aerial structure in Cal Anderson, and I've been looking forward to this show for months.

(I'll try to make this meetup but my health has been extremely iffy lately.)

Oh, and a followup update (and a bump for other folks).

I've just accepted a job with a company out of LA. I will be heading down next friday to start 4 weeks of training. There is a chance I may be returning to work out of Seattle, but if not, this may also be my last Seattle meetup for the foreseeable future.

Well, holy shit: 10th.

I'm out for this May deal, but like, the tenth? yes.

I'm debating whether to take the reins on a Seattle 10th meetup or just concede that we have two meetups three hours in either direction and there's no need for the duplication.

Maybe we can discuss on Saturday.
posted by dw at 11:05 PM on May 5, 2009

Well, there are rumblings about a sunday meetup in portland, so you guys could do a saturday meetup, and then interested parties could take the train down.
posted by mrzarquon at 11:17 PM on May 5, 2009

One last note: Rancho Bravo is cash only -- no cards. So bring your cash money if you want the burritos.

Holy cow, this is a great meetup. It is still happening, as a few of us are now at mrzarquon's. Seattle mefites rock!

I was pretty amused to hear that there were photos being posted while I still considered the meetup to be ongoing. Such a connected bunch. It was fun meeting new folks and seeing some familiar faces again as well. Hope to see y'all again soon!

Probably the best meet-up I've been to, though I don't regret leaving "early", as I later attended a function at Fantagraphics, just over the hill from where I live. I met Ellen Forney. We discussed late 60's muscle cars, autoerotic asphyxia, shime-waza, Gracie jiu-jitsu, and the death of Vaughn Bode'.

Cal Anderson park used to be skankville supreme for many years, they did a really good job in restoring the park. Outstanding choice, mrzarquon!

Great to see folks, glad everyone had a good time.

Unfortunately, I don't have any photos to upload, because in my foresight I thought to go charge my battery before the meetup. I did not however, remember to bring said charged battery with me.

Sorry to bug out early, but it was nice to fit a few more faces to names, rtha, gingerbeer, and jacalata. And the person sitting directly across from me, was it silkygreenbelly? I missed talking to grouse yet again, and it looks like hattifattener showed up later? You guys are awesome, though, can't wait to do it again.
