MeTa10th: Where are the Californians?

As writing this, there is one proposed meet-up, and that's Sacramento. Sorry, Sac-Town, but that's a bit far for this central/south-coaster. The Ventura/SB/IV/SLO meetup was a blast, so I'd like to demand we return to the Maverick in force, but we might get run outta town. Should we lay waste to LA? Flatten SF? Or claim SB as our own? Or do we reunite with Chad?

Fun game: fill those four asterisks with whatever you like

Maybe you've been absorbed into Oregon, like Seattle.

Yeah, at least two SF mefites are going to Portland....

I assumed LA would do something, but I'm not sure where or when. We've got a posse, but all this sun makes us flake.

I'm waiting for someone to volunteer to coordinate L.A. so I won't. Save me from myself, someone!

I think everyone's too busy being outside enjoying this beautiful weather. Or too hungover from post-Cinco de Mayo festivities.

Still waiting for someone to initiate the SF/Bay Area party, though!

Scody, you are officially not saved from yourself. I'm a party-goer, not a party-planner.

Hmmmmm... Hmm. Hmm.

I've been to meetups in all three places in the past three months and they are all fun in different ways, and the only advice I have is: cityfolk are lazy and do not travel far for their fun and do not have high opinions of parties in the boonies. Which is the way we like it, eh boonies dwellers? *indigent rabble in herringbox shoes shouts "yay"*

So, I'd been assuming I'd go down to LA, which is close enough for me and has very many delightful mefites. If you guys want to carpool and crash and all that, we are happy to volunteer our waystation.

Being an out-of-towner in both Big City Areas, I'd feel silly initiating either. That, and I fear paying for a huge bar tab. But if I can start one and pass the decision-making off to others (or at least the offering up of possible locations and whatnot), then I'll start this thing.

Indigent rabble says: Los Angeles would be good for me! Well, or SB. But LA seems more likely.

I don't do well with responsibility in general. I'm even worse with meetups.

I cannot be trusted with the 10th Anniversary MeFiLA.

*sighs*

OK, I'll start the thread, ON THE CONDITION that I am only assuming the mantle of CO-organizer, and someone else has to jump in to help. *looks meaningfully in the general direction of klang/space kitty/mandymanwasregistered/miss lynnster/et al.*

I personally think that it is necessary -- IMPERATIVE -- that the SF party be held at the Tonga Room.

Dude, LAers are notorious flakers. You're a brave person. Good luck.

scody, I would really like to be of help, but I'm just not quite local or nearly LA-literate enough.

UNLIKE SOME PEOPLE I CAN THINK OF, who reeeeeeally know LA suuuuuuper well.
posted by Ambrosia Voyeur at 2:17 PM on May 6, 2009

Also, am i waaay off in thinking that if LA people DON'T flake like crazy, and we get some imports as well, this could be the largest of the 10th anniversary meetups? We are kind of legion.
posted by Ambrosia Voyeur at 2:22 PM on May 6, 2009

Yeah, I think we should get a good turnout!

It's not the presumed SoCal flakiness that worries me re: organizing; it's the flakiness of the people involved in the book project I'm going to be working on at that point, so I can't even say for sure yet if I'll be on deadline the week before or the week after the meetup. I may be totally footloose and fancy-free come mid-July, or I may be up to my eyeballs in final proofreading and murderous thoughts.

Sorry, Sac-Town

Or as I like to call it: the Sac, as in, welcome to it.

San Diego is probably too far for central coast people, but if you know anyone close to San Diego... ahem.

I will be in California during the party! Unfortunately I don't know where yet. Somewhere along the coast riding a bike. I would guess between SF and LA inclusive. I have a dream that there will be little meetups happening at every small town down the coast, so no matter where I wind up I will be able to go to one. (this is totally the way it should be all the time everywhere, by the way.)

Hey scody! If you get the thread rolling I'll jump in there. We're all cool with meeting at Jumbo's Clown Room, right?
posted by mullingitover at 3:22 PM on May 6, 2009

up and rolling, my friend! (I think a Jumbo's meetup would be an automatic WIN, but we wouldn't be able to take pictures. The bouncers get testy!)
posted by scody at 3:29 PM on May 6, 2009

For what it's worth, I can't take on a Bay Area meetup plan myself because I'll be out of town and will have sporadic contact with the outside world for a few weeks leading up to the meetup dates, and that would be lame. But I will be back a few days before that weekend, and I'm willing to help out anyone who is brave enough to helm the thing.

I've been kind of anxiously awaiting the details.

I'd be happy to plan some kind of SF thing, but I'm abandoning y'all and heading for Portland, where they are promising me crappy beer and maybe if I'm lucky I get to crash under cortex's pool table.
posted by gingerbeer at 5:25 PM on May 6, 2009 [1 favorite]

Jumbo's is too small to handle a meetup of any more than four or five people.

I say we get together at Wurstkuche. Most meetups are sausagefests, anyway, so we might as well make it official.
posted by Parasite Unseen at 6:48 PM on May 6, 2009

heh... you read my mind.
posted by scody at 6:54 PM on May 6, 2009

I might be in the area*, but I'll be in Portland also for the meetup and a friends wedding.

But we've found that most places will let you reserve a room, if you agree to a minimum tab for the night ($400 appears to be the average in pdx anyway), which may work for you guys as a general idea. Much easier than trying to commandeer tables as the night goes on.

*got the job at the company (why I was visiting y'all a while back), I'll be in town from may 18th-june14thish, and possibly moving down after that if they want me to be local.

If anyone missed it, here's the LA planning thread, and there's a San Diego anniversary meet-up in the works. That is all.

Has anyone organized one of these things before? Exams will be over soon and I’m feeling not so lazy, so IF I were to initiate the SF/Bay Area party (it’ll most likely be in SF) what should I expect?
posted by blithecatpie at 11:35 AM on May 7, 2009

Hey, I threw some ideas into the ring but it looks like people are looking for more outdoorsy kind of fun, at which I'm less than expert.

That being said, AFTERPARTY AT JUMBO'S!

*ahem*

dude, I'm totally up for a Loteria/Jumbo's double-header. If all else fails, you and I will do that, and everyone else can go get sunburned on the beach.
posted by scody at 12:20 PM on May 7, 2009 [1 favorite]

blithecatpie, I'm still a bit confused about the whole PayPal bit (mostly: does the paypal signer-upper take responsibility for the tab? Or just excess damages?), but it seems meetups just need someone to spear-head the organization. You start the congo line, others join in. Or something.
posted by filthy light thief at 3:35 PM on May 7, 2009

filthy light thief, from my understanding, the only need for the PayPal account is to receive the $50-100 that will help subsidize the tab. Otherwise, the host just has to show up, be responsible for the event, take care of the tab and make sure everyone contributes to it...

...right??
