Was it Maximum Fun? June 15, 2009 10:54 PM   Subscribe

Since we know that Matt, ColdChef, SassHat, mullacc and other MeFites attended MaxFunCon last weekend (which made the MegaMetaMeetup in L.A. possible), those of us who did not get there want to know... how was it? Did Jonathan Coulter sing any new songs? Did John Hodgman reveal any new facts? Were the BoingBoingers totally insuffrable? Was Lake Arrowhead as nice as the bottled water of the same name? Do you have pictures? Videos? Celebrity DNA samples? Inquiring minds want to know!

Mmmmkay, there is a metachat thread which led me to ColdChef's flickr set of the Con and it seems that Judge John Hodgman settled an argument between SassHat and mullacc (quad roller skates vs inline skates) during the recording of Jordan, Jesse, Go! (about 33 minutes in). But I want more information! Information! By hook or by crook...

Here's lots of photos. I have some to upload, which should go up tomorrow.

Also, check out the MaxFun forum dedicated to MaxFunCon. I have a recap of day one in this thread the MaxFun forum, and will add more later, when I recover.

Briefly... it was incredibly awesome. One of the best weekends of my life, and definitely the funniest. All the presenters were great, and were really gracious to hang out with a bunch of nerds.

Coulton did some favorite songs, Hodgman revealed the fact that he can swig booze from a bottle and pass it around to the crowd, so there was some swapping of Hodgman DNA, if that counts as a sample. everyone was great: Tig Notaro, Maria Bamford, Hard & Phirm, Jimmy Pardo, Kasper Hauser, You Look Nice Today, Merlin Mann, Charlie Todd. And the live Never Not Funny with Pat Francis and The Bammer was the highlight for me. It's available to Primo NNF subscribers for download.

Also, I have to say, Jesse Thorn was a fantastic host. He and Jordan both made everyone feel welcome and like family.

I just listened to that on the Jordan Jesse Go podcast like an hour ago and I had no idea those were Mefites up on stage -- cool bananas! Here it is.

Wait... John Hodgman was at a meetup?

Because that changes everything!

It changed everything so much that I can't even remember what it was like before and therefore can't actually provide any examples of how anything has changed.

No, Hodgman was at MaxFunCon, which was also attended by a gaggle of Mefites.

Ditto! I need to listen again now.

I am SO envious - after spending the weekend mournfully wearing TSOYA t-shirts on the wrong side of the world - and also totally delighted by the photos and stories that make it sound even more awesome than I'd feared.

My MaxFunCon experience, from a Community Website point of view:
(I apologize in advance for the length of this)

I hope this exceptionally long story shows how awesome this community is and how much I rely on it on a day to day basis. Before leaving home to go out to L.A. for a visit and MaxFun, I made the horrendously bad decision to have Lasik laser eye surgery, with the idea that my eyes would be fine by the trip. Those of you who are on my Twitter feed are certainly tired of hearing about it, but in summary: I still can’t see.

So: although mrzarquon had generously offered the use of his two bedroom, two bath apartment ON THE BEACH, it was too far for me to go with damaged vision, so I got a hotel room Tuesday at the Best Western on Sunset Blvd (where I’m pretty sure I bought heroin from Skeet Ulrich).Tuesday night was depressing and sad because my eyes hurt so badly that I couldn’t so see the comedy shows I wanted to that night, and I ended up sitting in my hotel room and crying. (Yes, I’m that pitiful.)

The next morning (Wednesday), I was saved from suicide by Ambrosia Voyeur, who drove down from Ventura to take me to breakfast and sight-not-seeing. Within minutes of meeting AV, I knew we would be lifelong friends. She’s so incredibly super-awesome. She took me to breakfast at the King’s Road Café and then to the Getty Museum, where we both pretended to be high-brow art fans for about ten minutes, until we both loosened up into a couple of “Hey-lookit them titties over there” schoolchildren. I can honestly say that I’ve never had more fun at a museum. She then drove me all over town and we discussed movies and books and various styles of pornography, and death seemed to come up a lot, too. She dropped me off at my hotel that evening with the assurance that she was available for any chauffeur needs that I had for the rest of the week.

Then, I called my best friend from high school whose little brother lives out in L.A. and he and his beautiful wife were kind enough to come get me from my hotel and take me out for sushi and tranny spotting. The next day, he also took me to Venice and to the Museum of Jurassic Technology, which many MeFites had recommended to me, and for which I will pay them all back one day—you bastards. I’m still having nightmares.

Thursday night, I got picked up at my hotel by mullacc and SassHat, who I believe were looking for a young male rent-boy for sex, but accidentally got me instead. They took us to the meetup at the Farmers’ Market and we walked around with the blind dude leading the way until we ran into the group. Off the top of my head, I remember meeting scody, Lyn Never, bryanjbusch, eyeballkid, Space Kitty, DaShiv, infinitywaltz, contraption, AV again, miss lynnster, klangklangston, Asparagirl, carsonb, vikingsword, Thin Lizzy…oh, god. I know I’m leaving a lot of people out, but it was loud and I couldn’t really hear all the member names…there was a guy there who worked for Disney that was really cool, a young lady who made me feel so much better about being blind by giving me lots of toffee…I sincerely apologize for anyone who’s name I didn’t mention. It was completely overwhelming. And everyone was really nice, and mathowie bought us some drinks and there was a huge orgy where…you know what? I’ve said too much.

On Friday, my friend’s brother took me onto the Sony lot where we snuck onto the stage of Jeopardy, but got caught by security before we could take a picture. Oh, and we crashed the cast party of “The Taking of Pelham 123” and had free food and drinks. It was pretty cool.

That afternoon, after turning down offers of a ride from AV, Thin Lizzy, mathowie, and mullacc, I drove myself out to MaxFunCon (bad idea), up through the clouds to our mountain retreat. When I got there, after checking in, I went to the cocktail party, where I immediately met tristeza, who is one of the most fantastic MetaFilter members I’ve ever met in real life. She introduced me to John Hodgman and Jonathon Coulton, and I introduced her to mathowie and the rest of the MeFites from the night before. She was kind enough to have dinner with me and point out celebs as they came in. Mullacc and SassHat were late to arrive, but I made sure they got fed (because I’m a gentleman). Later, I met The Deej and his lovely daughter at the first show. I was sitting right behind her, and I heard her mention her dad’s name and I was all, “Excuse me, is your dad The Deej?” and then we hugged and it was a beautiful moment.

After the Friday night show, we walked up into the hills for free beer and s’mores (as awful a combination as you can imagine), and while everyone else timidly strolled around reading nametags, the MeFites were the loud, brash assholes in the corner telling MetaFilter war stories and acting like we’d all gone to high school together. This instantly made us both admired and hated by everyone else at MaxFun. All weekend long, it was like we had this special kind of secret society with secret MetaFilter handsigns.

The next morning, I ran into Merlin Mann before breakfast, and when I went to introduce myself, he recognized me from MetaFilter and there was this really strange moment where I was all star-struck by him and he wanted to know all about funerals and stuff and we got along like what I’m sure happens when Bono runs into Weird Al and they talk respectively about how cool they both are. He was very generous with his time and attention and I was twittering under the table the whole time about how I was “OMG having bkfst with Merlin Mann and I can’t breathe OMG”. Later, Merlin gave a talk that both terrified me that I was wasting my life and inspired me to begin writing that novel I’ve always wanted to (scody, prepare to edit some really bad crap).

The Saturday morning sessions with Dr. Cocktail were sadly unaugmented with actual booze, but he was entertaining and informative, and he later introduced me to John Hodgman, which was especially cool, because later that afternoon in an improv workshop, Hodgman spoke at the same time I did and then was all, “Oh, I’m sorry, GJ. You go first.” And I blanked out and stammered some lame question and spent the rest of the weekend bragging that John Hodgman had remembered my name. Yes, I’m that geeky.

During the taping of “Jordan, Jesse Go” mentioned above, mullacc and SassHat were awesome participants and really kept the guys on their toes. It was as great as it sounds on the podcast, but even better, because I was having one of those “THOSE ARE MY BUDS UP THERE” moments where I was elbowing everyone around me saying, “You know, I know those people.”

At that night’s comedy show which was held in a freezing open-air ampitheater, I sat with SassHat and mullacc and laughed my ass off at Tig Notaro, Hard N-Phirm, Jimmy Pardo, and Maria Bamford. Seriously, we couldn’t breathe for laughing so hard (and the altitude didn't help).

Sunday was breakfast and a taping of “Never Not Funny” where Jimmy talked directly to The Deej and I accidentally got put on the spot for booing when they said that they weren’t going to do a question of the week, and then I couldn’t come up with a question off the top of my head.

We all hugged and kissed goodbye like it was the last day of camp and went our separate ways.

Then, when I got stuck at the airport with five hours to kill before my flight, I twittered that I was bored and that anyone was welcome to call me and I spent at least three of those hours talking to jessamyn, special-k, Mamapotomus, pjern, and a few other MeFites whose names don’t immediately occur to me.

All-in-all, it was a great trip despite the blindness, and Jessie Thorn should be proud for throwing such an amazing, amazing weekend (though we’re all curious about his mysterious comment about how there was only one “conflict” at the event—was there a fight we weren’t privy to?) It was incredible to meet all of you in person and share such an memorable weekend with you.

I’m already planning for next year. May I suggest to Jesse that he should start trying to book Ira Glass, Sarah Vowell, and They Might Be Giants now?

Great post CF! It was fantastic to meet you, but since you were blind you won't know me when we meet again. Hope your eyeballs heal up soon!

Sunday was breakfast and a taping of “Never Not Funny” where Jimmy talked directly to The Deej...

That was in relation to Huey Lewis suing over the Ghostbusters song. I'll have to listen back to the episode, but I think it was Matt who said "Where's Darryl?" and asked if that was "obvious trivia." But Jimmy did give me some direct obvious trivia in the lobby to add to the site. (For the uninitiated, there is a recurring theme on Never Not Funny where they talk about trivia that everyone already knows. They discussed compiling these into a book, called Yes, I Know. So I stole the idea and set up the Obvious Trivia website. With the blessing of Jimmy and Matt, of course.) They have made a passing reference to the Obvious Trivia site on the show before, but now that I've been named directly I shall lord it over all the lesser people at every opportunity. That very day at lunch, I started yelling at the resort staff and saying Don't you know who I am!?

...I accidentally got put on the spot for booing when they said that they weren’t going to do a question of the week, and then I couldn’t come up with a question off the top of my head.

I will confess that I helped point you out when they asked who did that. I was sitting right behind you, so I pointed at your head with both hands. But really, no one wanted it to end. You just happened to be the one they heard. And once someone is in Jimmy's gunsights, you may as well 'fess up and take what he dishes.

Aw, ColdChef, I'm so glad you had such a great time! The only thing that would have made your trip more perfect is if you really had run into Carrie Fisher and approached her by saying "You know that part in your recent book where you talked about little boys jerking off to you in the '80s?"

At first I was going to comment on how unlikely it is that the Museum of Jurassic Technology would give nightmares to a guy who works in a funeral home, but then I thought back to my first visit to MJT, and reconsidered.

I also need to add: even though I couldn't make it in time for the Massive Mega Metafilter Meetup, I did have the extreme pleasure of catching up with the divine miss lynnster, who treated me and my daughter to a tour of Hollywood and vicinity as we cruised in my (rented) 2010 red Mustang Convertible. I did set foot on the Holy Meetup Spot at Farmer's Market, just a couple days too late. We had great meal at Yamashiro and continued the tour into the evening through Beverly Hills. What a great ending to a great weekend!

I KNOW! I am dying to know what happened - maybe lonelysandwich punched a waitress?

I'd like to kiss ass right back to ColdChef, who is one of the (very) few people I've ever met in my life who I IMMEDIATELY liked and felt comfortable with - I literally felt like we were buds from way back, 1 minute into talking. I miss ya already!

MaxFunCon was absolutely incredible, and I have to admit that it was partially because I am actual, hand to god, in real life friends with Hodgman and Coulton, so I got to spend a lot of time hanging out with some of the "stars" of the event, who are all pretty much the cutest, nicest folks in the world.

I am sad to be home, and so thankful to have been able to spend that time in the company of such amazing, inspiring people. If you can go next year - DO IT!!

Aw, what a gem this guy.

ColdChef's just letting me down easy since it was abundantly clear that I became a jiggly fangirl upon contact with him. It really was a fun day and I was practically saying OOH OOH PICK ME I'LL DRIVE YOU TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH, because there's no better company on a summer day than Mefi's beloved undertaker. Dude snuck and bought me the book of the Museum's exhibition and a poster of a display we both liked as gifts of gratitude. I'll never be that thoughtful and gracious if I scrunch up my face and concentrate on it for my whole life. But I'm working on it.

I put his (very cool, where do you get these again?) card on my refrigerator. It's neato to behold with its literary recommendation: The Undertaking on it, and doubles as a subtle reminder not to open the fridge and move a bit closer to being one of those people he has to hire backhoes, cranes or teams of mustangs to remove from their homes in the end.

Thanks for the little shout-out, GJ. I'll be working hard on seeing you again soon.

My only real complaints about MFC is that it never felt like there was enough time (unless you were a time-zone challenged early riser like me), and it was louder than the apocalypse at meals, neither of which are things Jesse can fix so I'll just be better prepared next year and not lose my Sudafed so my ears aren't constantly clogged.

It was awesome and inspiring and I'm already fretting over the likely competition for tickets next year.
