Hamilton, ON: let's have a meetup!

the dief and i talked about the possibility of a Hamilton meetup - so, who's up for it? i'll throw out some Fridays and Saturdays to get started:

- Saturday, Sept. 26
- Friday, Oct. 2
- Saturday, Oct. 3
- Friday, Oct. 9

would people from the Niagara region come? Mississauga, Oakville, Burlington..? dare i ask, Torontonians?

unfortunately, cortex has no Canadian stops but we can eat a donut on his behalf.

discuss!

If it's on a Saturday, there's a good chance I'd show up, from a few km east of Toronto.

Hooray! Anytime, anyplace!

That could happen, but I have a concert on Oct 3rd so that's out for me. (Kitchener)

I'd be cycling from Toronto, so it would have to end really early :)

I personally vote for anytime and place (work in burlington, live in grimsby). i have no strong preference for friday vs saturday but the earlier dates are better as i travel and have some commitments for the later dates mentioned.

YAY HAMILTON!

Seeing as I live in Hamilton, I'm up for that. Can't do the September 26th date, but the October ones are swell.

I am back in the ancestral homeland of the Hammer on October 9th for the imminent Giving of Thanks. That would suit me well to meet up with folks then.

Whoa, I was just thinking there should be a southern Ontario meetup. I'm in the Niagara region and I'd go if I'm free. My schedule's a bit up in the air right now but probably any of the dates but the 9th would work for me.

i'm not great with figuring out the best date... i have a problem picking things that exclude people.

i just chose Fridays/Saturdays assuming they'd be best. is Sunday a better idea?
posted by gursky at 6:39 PM on September 4, 2009

Sunday is a horrifically bad idea, given the 100% likelihood of hangovers.

I might be able to attend this, haven't been to the Hammer in ages.

too true. given that i am unemployed, i hope my oversight can be forgiven ;)
posted by gursky at 7:41 PM on September 4, 2009

Wow, a non-Toronto meetup! I split time between Waterloo and Niagara (roughly equal distance to Hamilton), so any of those dates should work for me.
posted by saraswati at 5:59 AM on September 5, 2009

Oh, but I also cast a negative vote for Sunday. For reasons unrelated to hangovers.
posted by saraswati at 6:02 AM on September 5, 2009

I can probably make it from London on a Friday or Saturday night. (If anyone in area's offering to drive, that would be even better!)
posted by greatgefilte at 2:18 PM on September 5, 2009

how is Saturday the 19th? too soon?

if not, can we roll with Saturday the 26th?
i really want this to work for the largest number of people.
posted by gursky at 8:08 PM on September 5, 2009

shiza! neither date (19th or 26th) works for me! i'll be on vacation...
posted by chasles at 2:12 PM on September 6, 2009

If it is in September, you will be Biscuitless. I am currently in the Yukon, about as far as once can get from Hamilton without a passport.
posted by ricochet biscuit at 10:14 PM on September 6, 2009

If I can find a way to get back to either Waterloo or Toronto reasonably late (GO Transit and Coach Canada both fail in this regard), I'm totally up for it.

friday, october 2nd.
i'm going to stop being wishy-washy (and avoid saying "wishy-washy" ever again).

now, venue?

i'm going to leave suggesting a venue up to the dief, since he's more familiar with Hamilton.
posted by gursky at 4:09 PM on September 7, 2009

I'm not sure if I can make this, but if you want more non-Hamiltonians showing up, Saturday October 3 might be better than Friday for people with long commutes.
posted by maudlin at 5:34 PM on September 7, 2009

Saturday would be much better for us, sorry. It's going to be halfway impossible making it through the traffic from Toronto to Hamilton early on a Friday evening.
posted by randomination at 7:30 PM on September 9, 2009

Sorry, the 2nd won't work for me. Have fun!
posted by ricochet biscuit at 8:38 PM on September 9, 2009

Holy christ venue. I don't know. Man. OK. Let me suss this out. Do we have a tally of people showing up yet? The Winking Judge is decent, away from Hess (important now that school has started) and has good beer, but if we get above a certain size it may not work.
posted by the dief at 2:00 PM on September 10, 2009

Looks like Cheeto and me are free that night. We'll be there if you folks don't shut the border on us.
posted by kuujjuarapik at 2:54 PM on September 10, 2009

valid point re: Saturday vs. Friday

can people who will/would attend on the 2nd make it on the 3rd? all in favour, etc etc.?
posted by gursky at 5:12 PM on September 10, 2009

3rd, 2nd, it's all the same.
posted by the dief at 7:21 PM on September 10, 2009

Moving it to the 3rd would interfere with Nuit Blanche, which could be an issue for Toronto/other GTA people.
posted by thisjax at 4:13 AM on September 11, 2009

okay, let's stick with the 2nd. we'll take what we can get.

The Winking Judge sounds good - i don't think we'll have an especially large meetup.

finalized: The Winking Judge, October 2nd

let's say 7, 7.30ish. if people come later (coming from Toronto or work or what have you), that's alright too.
posted by gursky at 12:11 PM on September 14, 2009

OK. I'll find out about asking after the upstairs room at the Judge. I've been there before for a private-ish party, so it shouldn't be a big deal.
posted by the dief at 3:37 PM on September 14, 2009

i'm there....
posted by chasles at 6:33 AM on September 16, 2009

awesome, chasles!

i might send out a message a little closer to the date, to remind (& coax) people.
posted by gursky at 9:17 PM on September 17, 2009

You could also drop into the Toronto thread and coax there. You might scoop up a few who can't make it to that meetup.
posted by cranberrymonger at 12:01 PM on September 18, 2009

that's a good idea - thank you!

Awww, that blows. I'm in Cape Breton that weekend :(

Too much school stuff going on that week and the next, sorry. Probably won't be able to leave guelph at all this semester :(
posted by tehloki at 3:37 PM on September 23, 2009

Awesome, looking forward to meeting people on the 2nd! The pub is about 10 minute's walk from where I live too, so no excuses ;)
posted by lowlife at 3:52 PM on September 23, 2009

sorry to hear about those who can't make it. :(

but i am looking forward to seeing some of the people i met at MeFi10, and meeting some new people too!
posted by gursky at 10:34 PM on September 23, 2009

Unless somebody tells me how to fold time and space using a GO Bus I can't go to this on the Friday. Have a great time.
posted by randomination at 6:13 PM on September 30, 2009

I'm going to be there, but I'll be a bit later than 7 as I'm going to the hacker space conference that starts then too. Hope to see you all a bit later in the evening!

if Gary Roberts never played for Columbus, does that mean lowlife and i get the million dollars?

Hah! We looked him up. I'll split the million with youse guys. :)
