Hey, this is a really nicVVVRRRSSSHHHHHXXXX ok now I'm deaf September 7, 2009 10:41 AM   Subscribe

Can I put in a formal request to schedule the Toronto meetup?

I can? Good. Here it is.

I'm just about all unpacked now and I'd love to get out and meet you guys. It's been a great week - I really love this city - but it's been a touch lonely for us having left all of our friends and family behind for now. Let's get together and get drunk, ok? I know there's supposedly something "in the works" but I need (would like) a date, folks.

as long as it's not during CanWEA 2009 (20th-22nd; I have to have my serious propeller-beanie on then), and before the 27th, I'm absolutely clear.

Would the 18th work for everyone, or is that too short of a notice?
posted by setanor at 3:24 PM on September 7, 2009

We should totally have an election night meetup. Since that's going to be coming up.
posted by Hildegarde at 4:44 PM on September 7, 2009

I'm good for whenever, just as long as it doesn't conflict with Hammertime (oh no, did I really just say that?
posted by thisjax at 4:49 PM on September 7, 2009

They 18th is during the film fest, can we wait til the film fest is over? I vote for not waiting for the election since we don't even know yet when that will be. However, it would be great to have a second meetup wherein we meet at some bar with a TV to watch the debate.

Meetup sounds good. I'm pretty flexible.

I'm in for whenever. I'm unemployed. I've got the time. Anyone want to give me a job?
posted by SassHat at 5:41 PM on September 7, 2009

I too am sort of unemployed. Well, there's this baby but whatever. Maybe a lunch meetup for us leisure types?
posted by Go Banana at 5:56 PM on September 7, 2009

I was bummed to miss the 10th anniversary meetup. Also unemployed, and therefore, flexible. Woot.
posted by meerkatty at 6:13 PM on September 7, 2009

I could also do a lunch meetup for most of the month, too.
posted by scruss at 6:34 PM on September 7, 2009

Pajama party?
posted by SassHat at 10:24 PM on September 7, 2009

I will add that the person who calls the meetup usually names the time and place, and whoever can come will show up. If you try to make everyone happy it's more hassle than needed.
posted by SassHat at 9:43 AM on September 8, 2009

I can't do lunch except on Thursdays and Saturdays. For approximately the same reasons, Fridays are my only really good night.

And yes, after TIFF please. Too many celebuwhores everywhere.

Welcome to Toronto!

We could also see something at the Trash Palace beforehand (I have no idea if the Sept 18th film is a swedish erotic horror or a documentary about the FLQ or something else, I emailed Stacey). I can't commit to coming because I'm a flake.

Also, if any of you are Sound of Young America/Jordan, Jesse, Go! fans, please MeMail me ASAP. Thx.

So, how about, let's do the 25th? Victory? Somewhere with a deck, maybe if it's still warm? Not sure where you've had meetups in the past, but I do like somewhere with good beer... I've heard some good things about Ciros also, out at Bloor and Landsdowne?
posted by setanor at 9:00 AM on September 9, 2009

It's about time for a meetup east of the Don Valley. Allen's would be good but for their bizarre anti-reservations-on-the-patio policy. Suggest somewhere within a 15 minute stumble of a 24h bus route or a subway stop.
posted by dirtynumbangelboy at 9:50 AM on September 9, 2009

Yay!! East side!! There's loads of patios in the Beach--how do people feel about that neighbourhood? Queen car is 24 hr.
posted by Go Banana at 11:15 AM on September 9, 2009

Fine with me. Sounds like you know what's good out there.
posted by setanor at 12:09 PM on September 9, 2009

25th works for me ... Beach/Danforth is *west* for me, tho' ...
posted by scruss at 12:41 PM on September 9, 2009

The 25th *should* be alright, and as an east-ender the Beach/es would be ideal.

I've been told about Murphy's Law... that they have a really nice roof patio?
posted by setanor at 1:14 PM on September 9, 2009

I don't actually know which of the many pubs are good...does anyone else? I'll be down there this weekend so if no one else has a recommendation I could just pick a place based on who will do a patio reso (with inside backup).
posted by Go Banana at 1:19 PM on September 9, 2009

Forgot about that! Murphy's Law totally has a great patio. I'd be in favour of that for sure.
posted by Go Banana at 1:30 PM on September 9, 2009

Ok, so the 25th at Murphy's Law it is.

I've never been to a mefi meetup, so I don't know how it works. Do you guys all know each other already? Because I don't think I know anyone from Toronto on the blue...

I've been to exactly one meetup so far, the 10th anniversary one. So while there might be some people coming to this one who I will recognize, it's probably a stretch to say that I really know anyone at this point. And I think the organizer of this one is new to the city and doesn't really know anyone either. So you wouldn't be the only one.

As for how it works, I'd like to propose the following procedure:
  1. Enter the designated drinking establishment.
  2. Wander around until you see a group of people who look like they could be From the Internettm
  3. Ask, "Is this the MetaFilter meetup?", and if the answer is not some form of "yes", return to the previous step.
  4. Say, "Hi, I'm {your mefi username}."
  5. The group responds with "Hello, we're {enumerate our mefi usernames}"
At the 10th anniversary meetup, nobody seemed too sure if introductions should be made using mefi usernames or real names, and people seemed oddly hesitant to introduce themselves, so the above procedure should resolve these minor issues. As we had exclusive use of the establishment, steps 1-3 were not required, but normally would be.

Yes, I am this pedantic in real life as well.

I've been to two meetups. The first I didn't know anyone, the second I knew a few people. Both were fun, because I got pretty loaded. That's the ticket.

Sadly, i'm pretty sure I can't make this party.

Not politically correct to ask, but what are my chances of being denied entrance? I'm 18, although I look older and generally have no problem, but some places are meticulous about carding.

If this is uncool to ask in a public forum, please mefimail me! I'm nervous about not making it.
posted by alon at 3:09 PM on September 22, 2009

alona, IMO, I would say 'clubs', ie dance clubs, are much more likely to card. at a 'G O O D F O O D Q U A L I T Y A L E S G R E A T C O N V E R S A T I O N' place I think the chances you'll get carded are less than 10%, and maybe nil if you're with a bunch of people who look older.

posted by iona at 5:31 AM on September 26, 2009

That was fun. And there were mini-muffins. Yay!
posted by scruss at 5:46 AM on September 26, 2009

That was a really nice meetup, especially with those surprising and tasty little muffins - yay! It was great to see everyone, especially the newbies and almost-newbies. And an extra thanks to everyone who responded graciously and helpfully when I badgered them for cycling destination ideas. Apparently Scarborough is the place to go for awesome and cheap Sri Lankan food and faux-dinosaur bones, and there are places in Toronto that will let you pick apples for free. Who knew?

No, and I tried mefimailing him to see what was up, and he never replied. Actually, I'm pretty worried.
posted by alon at 11:47 PM on September 29, 2009

He was favouriting today so his index finger is at least working. Maybe he has the same disease the guy in the "Diving Bell and the butterfly" had and is desperately trying to send a message through his favourites because he can no longer type. If he missed it because he is flaky like me (I think I was in downtown Oshawa that night of all places) don't worry setanor. Just call another meetup - or there is also the hammer meetup this weekend with the excellent dief.
posted by saucysault at 6:34 AM on September 30, 2009

Oooo. Locked-in syndrome. Has anyone read "Diving Bell and the Butterfly"? Would you recommend it? I've read "Johnny Got His Gun" and thought it was interesting, if graphic.
