DC/Arlington/Georgetown Meetup, Friday, October 16th Anyone?

Hi DC MeFites! I'll be visiting DC/Georgetown from Wed., Oct 14th – Sat, the 17th and I would love to meet you! How about friday the 16th, at a mellow but fun place with food, drinks, and that is easily Metro-able/walkable?

Ha! I have to work a cocktail reception from 4:30 to 6:30 but I'm free after. What if we met at Mackey's at 7pm? It's at L and 19th NW near DuPont.

Yay! I would love to do this and my poorly crafted linguistics puns will ring out through the night and they won't make sense to anyone but me (par for the course, really). We should be good for just about anywhere/when, so see you soon.

I've been looking for an excuse to visit Yaku, right at the Court House Metro in Arlington.
posted by NortonDC at 12:13 PM on October 5, 2009

I'm game — Yaku sounds fun (and, perhaps more importantly, the drink specials look good), and it's been a while since we've done an Arlington / Orange Line meetup.

this is true. I'm game for arlington.

Damn...I'll be there a week earlier to support my GF in the Komen 3 Day. Oct 8-11th. I'll be at the Marriott at Metro Center. Anyone interested in meeting for a pint let me know. I'll be cheering her on during the day but free in the evenings.

I have to work later in the evening, but that's super close to my apartment, so I can probably wake up early enough to come out for awhile.

Oh, and by "that" I mean Yaku. I'm not working the 8-11th weekend, so I would probably be up for something then too.

Hmm. Put me down as a maybe - Now that I've moved north, I'd love to meet some DC area MeFites - but that's probably the last free Friday I'm going to have in a long while, and I need to take the opportunity to grab some furniture... not sure if I'll have the time to make it up there... :-(

I might be able to head down for this from the frozen northern tundra (ok, not really) of Baltimore.

Argh. I missed the last one when it moved from Dupont to the Atlas District and now I'll be out of the country. I do plan on meeting with you guys up some time. Or meeting with you guys some time up. Or upmeeting. Or something. Up.

Count me in. Anyone interested in seeing Office Space at the AFI Theatre in Silver Spring on Saturday night? Appearances by Stephen Root, Gary Cole, and a red Swingline raffle.

If we're in the bar area, that's smoking territory. Apparently the rest of Yaku (restaurant seating, private rooms...) is all non-smoking. If we hang out in the smoking area, Dimples will have to stay home and either onlyconnect or I won't be able to participate. Maybe a reserved room would work for the gathering? Or is staying in the bar area the goal?
posted by NortonDC at 6:06 AM on October 7, 2009

Well, I think meeting people is the goal. But I'm from CA, so I know the smoker's drill. Let's get a room if we can (whee!)...but only if that's not going to be a pain to find for everybody. Otherwise let's just get a table so that we can have food AND drinks AND clean air AND mass MeFites. How's about 7 pm?
posted by iamkimiam at 8:58 AM on October 7, 2009

Go for the most inclusive approach. If that's the bar, then that's totally cool by us.
posted by NortonDC at 3:51 PM on October 7, 2009

Hopefully it's not too late to RSVP, but I'd be in for this as well.

Should I call and make a reservation, or should we just show up and coagulate?

I've never been to this place so I couldn't say how coagulation-friendly it is, but here's the roster so far unless I missed someone:

Kojo Nnamdi had a program on internet addiction today. The panelists suggested it's not such a problem if you meet the people in person.

Which just goes to demonstrate that if you don't show up Friday, you must have a problem. Something for you 'maybes' to think about....

Also, meetups are super fun when lots of unexpected MeFites show up. About a year ago in SF we had a meetup at Zante's Pizza (Indian pizza = excellent!) and originally reserved a table for ~12. 14 or so originally showed up, and then 2 or 3 more people, every 15 minutes, for about two hours. It was awesome. We just kept adding tables until we'd digdugged our way through half the floorspace. The waiters loved us I'm sure.

Btw, I haven't made a reservation yet. I'm kind of running around like a crazy person, and so if somebody else wants to take that on, I'd be super grateful! Maybe about 14 people, under the name Matt H.? I'm also bringing a non-MeFite friend. Please don't scare him! Well, ok, maybe a little. Could be fun.

I plan to be there.
posted by gsteff at 8:18 PM on October 14, 2009

So what time do we want to do this thing? Parmanparman mentioned 7pm, but that was in relation to a different venue. Should we get the reservation and start somewhat earlier than that, and then people can just arrive whenever they can make it over?

I can probably get there as early as 5 to get the room, if that's an issue.
posted by Kadin2048 at 11:23 PM on October 14, 2009

That would be great, if you want to do that. I was planning on 7, and won't be able to get there before then.
posted by iamkimiam at 6:54 PM on October 15, 2009

I'll be there, but might be a little late since 7 means driving in rush hour. I'm also considering hitting up Wonderland Ballroom on my way back to Baltimore if anyone wants to join me.
posted by youcancallmeal at 10:44 PM on October 15, 2009

There is a definite possibility that people will be up for something like that -- I've found that these events tend to exceed pretty much any time limit and there is almost always someone up for continuing to do stuff (sometimes it's me!).
posted by Mrs. Pterodactyl at 6:31 AM on October 16, 2009

If it helps anyone get there a bit earlier, the happy hour menu at Yaku is valid from 5 - 7:30 PM. Just puttin' that out there.

I'll try to call about getting a table in a non-smoking area later on this afternoon.
posted by Kadin2048 at 6:56 AM on October 16, 2009

Sigh. This weather is getting me down. I might not make it out after all. It'll be a big surprise. :)
posted by youcancallmeal at 1:52 PM on October 16, 2009

Okay, I just got off the phone with Yaku's GM. We have a table for 12+ people for 7PM, since I wasn't sure how many people would be there earlier than that, and I didn't want to risk getting a huge reservation and then only have a few people there. The reservation is under "Metafilter". (Which he accepted, I'll add, without any questioning whatsoever.)

Now that we have a reservation I'll wait on getting there until at least 5:30 or 6ish.
posted by Kadin2048 at 1:55 PM on October 16, 2009

Meal, you know that if you drag your butt out, you'll be glad you did. But yeah, this weather gets me down. All the more reason to drink a beer and be social. :)

blah I hate working weekends
I bet y'all are still out having fun, aren't you :(

I'll give the early report since left early: MetaFilter is looking good, baby, but somehow parmanparman is the only one who's supposed email me a phone number. ?? How that works, and what role alcohol plays, who can say except that the world is loving place and MetaFilter helps the magic happen.

Slightly more seriously, Yaku turns out to be a pleasant space, though nearly as loud as Zaytinya, and that's saying something. I'm eager to hear reports from folks that ordered food. I think there were about 20 people there when I left on an errand, so I'm guessing somebody tried the food. And how about that sci-fi wine dispenser?

Good luck to iamkimiam, and good luck and congratulations to the ish__es!
posted by NortonDC at 10:17 PM on October 16, 2009

I didn't eat there today, I've previously had food that was quite tasty.

I can email you phone numbers of various MeFites who weren't actually at this meetup if you want to make prank phone calls.

It's 5:30 AM, myself, Mrs. Pterodactyl, Copronymous, and Orthogonality who is apparently sleeping on our couch, just got home. I definitely remember going to at least two bars, a diner, a non-Metafilter party and wandering the abandoned streets of Arlington at 4:00 AM screaming "FUCK YOU!" at passing cabs that refused to stop. Other things might have happened. All in all an evening to remember, if not enjoy.

iamkimiam, if you do wind up moving out here, we should absolutely have a meetup to celebrate your arrival. You can even sleep on our couch, if you're willing get lost at 4:00 AM.

If I find your couch (which I'd like to do sometime in the future), I will not be lost!

Had a great time meeting you all!
