So of course I had to go find the part where you talk about me, because I'm shallow like that (I promise I'll go back and listen to the whole thing after I type this). Jessamyn, you linked to my blog on librarian.net, and I sent you an email to say "Thanks, and by the way, I've always wanted to have a Metafilter account." I think Paypal was already accepting credit cards by then without an account, but I didn't know that, so I had assumed no Paypal = no Metafilter. I believe I am the only MeFite to have paid for my account with "Andrew Carnegie Builds a Library" cards.

I swear I'm not a fusty Waspy person who likes oil portraits in wood paneled rooms! (Okay, so I like oil portraits, and I do like wood paneling in some rooms like libraries, but yeah, definitely not a Wasp.) I just really, really like portraiture and always have. And I like supporting artists, and want to do something fun with that.
I think I'm going to do an FPP on Egyptian funerary portraits. They kick ass.

The interesting thing about my Mom's family portraits is that her parents were first-generation Americans and I get the feeling this was something they did to try to be more American. My father's family is the waspy side and I don't remember them having any paintings.

That's interesting.
The one other oil portrait I have has a similar story: my family calls it "The Ancestor." We have no idea who she is; my grandmother (who grew up poor during the Depression on a farm on Sand Mountain near Oneonta, Alabama) apparently thought you had to have a painting of an ancestor over your mantle, and so, in her inimitable way, she just went out and got one.

True Story: I read the electro thread before I did the Garage thread, but I didn't intentionally copy it. I looked at the popular favorites later and realized how similar they were, and was like whoops.

Homer: Hmm. I wonder why he’s so eager to go to the garage?
Moe: The “garage”? Hey fellas, the “garage”! Well, ooh la di da, Mr. French Man.
Homer: Well what do _you_ call it?
Moe: A car hold!

Oh wow, the side of the bed thing! I was about to post something on AskMe about that, because I was really weirded out watching Paranormal Activity because the dude, Micah, sleeps away from the door. I understand why that was done (digital matting), but it was really odd.

I go out of town for a week and come back to find that my research thread got mentioned in the MetaFilter podcast—and jessamyn even remembered how to pronounce my user name! (You still owe me a drink at the next Iowa meetup...)
I haven't commented on the actual research thread for a while, mostly because I want to let the alphabet game play itself out naturally. (It's all part of the data set, baby!) Right now, there are 642 comments in that thread, and I'd guess that more than half of them are part of the alphabet game. I'll need to thank not_on_display in the acknowledgments section of my dissertation for getting things started and making my committee members squirm a little bit.

I would like to apologize to listeners in advance for being a little hyper and a little sweary on this podcast.
I put the podcast on my ipod on Sunday afternoon after a long walk and lay down on the bed to listen in, then I inadvertently drifted off to sleep thanks to all the fresh autumn air, only to be woken up every now and again from my blissful slumber by the sound of you being a little hyper and a little sweary. I assumed it was just cos I was sleepy that you seemed a little louder than usual, I didn't realise you were having an officially-recognised hyperswearathon. Hell, why not, you deserve it!
Rest assured, I did re-listen today while awake and now I'm curious as to what the other British word for garage was that Mathowie was groping for. Shed? Lean-to? Lock-up?
Thanks for a good show.

cog_nate: The "too clever by half" & Sideshow Bob sound were all because the mods were not communicating well.
The podcast isn't slick & polished by any means (er. actually, the production is much improved), but it's conversational & imperfect & flawed & I'm totally fine with that. I'd rather the mods keep this up rather than get all self-conscious about it.
Except for cortex's pronunciation of Mefi as "meh-FEE." That's just not right, yo.
Yay for the Google PDF Viewer!
