Don't thank me, thank pb. He did it all today, so it should look a lot better in Android 1.5 and 2.0.

I personally prefer the plain-text theme on mobile devices, do you think we should force that to plain text for droids? Then you don't have the clunky top graphic to worry about, cleaner, shorter menus, etc.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 7:03 PM on December 8, 2009

Well, I like the section accordion a whole lot. The graphics could be minimized, but plain text implies losing the site colors, which is not a good idea, I think.

Thanks, pb!

Sure, I'll just need your receipt.

I'm sure for people who weren't browsing the site on their android phones, this is kinda baffling, but really, there's been a huge, huge improvement.

Also, I seriously can't imagine another site owner just buying a phone so he can get to the bottom of what's making a fraction of the site's readers unhappy.

And when it's dry and ready
Then droidel I shall play.

Droidel, droidel, droidel
I made it out of clay,
Droidel, droidel, droidel,
Then droidel I shall play.

It has a lovely body,
With legs so short and thin,
And when it is all tired
It drops and then I win.

I don't know.

This.

Added bonus: with the exception of the Pre's idiotic lack of support for anchors, it behaves really well with iPhone layouts and CSS. Seriously, just grep the user-agent string for 'webOS' (which will also catch iPhones, natch), and apply the styling rules for iPhone. I've had to make one or two little tweaks to make some super-specific functionality work specifically on the Pre on the site I support, but that's for some weird CSS stuff we do that I don't see anywhere on MeFi.

Dear Mathowie,

This is a cease and desist letter on behalf of the Lucasfilm Corporation (henceforth referred to as "Lucasfilm"). It has come to our attention that there has been an unauthorized use of the term "droid." "Droid" is a trademark of Lucasfilm and must be licensed from Lucasfilm prior to any approved usage. Henceforth, you have 47 minutes to rectify this problem by removing the unauthorized usage of "droid" from your website. In lieu of removing this unauthorized usage, you may make some changes to your website to bring it within line of approved Lucasfilm products:

1) Change background to a professional white background. We understand that perhaps at the time of creating your website you did not have the technical ability to use a white background, but with advances in browser software and coding languages, you should now be able to do what you always intended.

2) Incorporate more child friendly elements into your website. Presently your website appears to be attractive to mature audiences. There is a distinct lack of website mascot(s) or other amusing characters that will play to the under 7 years old audience. Our own research suggests that the most successful mascots are either tall and clumsy or small, furry and speak an unintelligible dialect. Please choose one or the other,

3)Expand the merchandise section of your website. Presently, your website store contains only a limited shirt selection. This is unacceptable. The following merchandise needs to be added. Moderator themed action figures, lunch boxes, bed sheets, costumes, posters, t-shirts, Lego sets, socks, shorts, underwear and other clothing apparel. There should be moderator themed ring tones, platform independent action/problem solving/simulator games, and lightsabers. From the sell of said merchandise Lucasfilm will collect 70% of the gross net profit.

If the aforementioned changes are not made, then the unauthorized use of "droid" must be removed from your website. You now have 45 minutes to comply.

Apparently you've never met very many website owners. A flimsy excuse to buy a state of the art piece of technology? DONE.

Thanks, Matt and pb. It's a little too bad that the font size for my browser and the font size for my phone use the same preference. I like my text teeny on my computer, but that makes it a real reading challenge on my phone.

If you switch to the standard version on your phone, you can click the "mobile" link in the footer to switch back. It's the last link in the 2nd column; the one titled Links.

And yep, only some features are available in the mobile version. You'll have to switch back and forth for some things like adding posts.

I absolutely love the (iPhone version of the) mobile site, and I really appreciate all the time and effort it took for you to make it and test it and tweak it and then do it all over for Android, and it's really just the prettiest pony ever, but...

Can we have search?

When you get a chance?

Please?

I've done a bit of a work around by switching to the standard site, opening up search, switching back to the mobile version, then bookmarking that, but that only works for posts OR comments, with no way to switch in between (I haven't tried to do it for tags or users). I really hate to be all, "HAY GUIZ THAS A NICE PONY AN ALL BUT Y DONT I GOT A PRETY PINK SADLE 4 IT SHUD GIV ME DAT," but... I'd really like a pretty pink search saddle for my mobile pony.
