I'm happy to come - something I've been meaning to do for a while. Churchkey isn't great for meetups as there just isn't a lot of space for largeish groups of indeterminate numbers. Also it's not a place where it's always easy to hold table space. Last time we had one at H Street Country Club I went and nobody else showed up. I personally think Brickskeller is atrocious in many ways (terrible food, they only have 1/10 of the beers on their menu, annoying atmosphere) but that's just me. I've never been to Atomic Billiards so I have nothing annoying to say about it.

Most likely yes. The first weekend works for me, but not the second. No preference on any of the locations.

How am I supposed to call meal if you don't provide a phone number??

My wife and I met at Atomic Billiards and love the place. Pool tables, dart boards, juke box, great bartenders. If you go, and Rich the bartender is there, say hi please.

I have wimped out of every single DC event for the past two years 'cause I'm a weenie but I would like to go, really. Count me in?

My life has finally settled down a bit so it is quite possible that I can make it out.

It helps that I now live within walking distance of Med Center rather than a fifteen minute drive from Shady Grove, too.

I was kind of hoping for one on Jan 1st, since I'll be in DC already.

btw, is this the thread where i can share that I'm djing at this little shindig that sold out 1700 tickets a few days ago? cause i've been dying to have an excuse to.

You might be able to get tix on craigs list if anyone wants to go.

Come to my house for New Year's Day brunch!

youcancallmeal's been there for that, as have several other MeFites, and there will be quite a few in attendance this year, too. Seriously--we do a soul-food brunch thing every year, getting rolling around 1, wrapping up around 6 or so. I'd love it if folks brought guitars and such--that was tremendous fun (for me, at least) at Cortexapalooza.

Shoot me a MeMail for details.

That sounds great, MrMoonPie, but unfortunately I plan to spend the first drunk at the Blackfinn watching the Penn State game.

Well, I guess it is only unfortunate for the wait staff that is stuck serving a bar full of rowdy alumni.
posted by Loto at 8:22 AM on December 30, 2009

I'm also planning on being at the MoonPies' on Jan 1st, assuming the Dread Wintry Mix doesn't stop me. It's good times all around and I'll bring my cheap uke that I can't actually play and my little hippie drum.

Grither - you owe me a drink for that. :)

So, I'm thinking I'll go scout Churchkey and check it out for size. If it is too small, I'll call it for Atomic since it's relatively easy to access for everyone. I just wish they had better beers. Alas.

I'll also call it for Saturday, Jan. 16 at 7pm. Cool, yo?
posted by youcancallmeal at 1:20 PM on December 30, 2009

So not to repeat myself but Churchkey is a terrible place for a meetup.

Don't get me wrong, I like the place and think it's worth it for others to check out on their own time. It's just often extremely crowded to the point where it would be impossible to get a table or any of the lounge space in the back. It's not designed for people just to drop in or to handle large groups. There are no large tables and unless we know exactly how many people are coming and can get everyone to show up at the same time, it doesn't make sense to go to one of the "hot" new places in town. Why not go somewhere designed for bigger groups of indeterminate size and where people can show up whenever they want?

The woman who cut my hair today is going to that NYE celebration, and is very excited. Just sayin'. (I, on the other hand, will be at the local bar.)

allen.spaulding: Would you like to make a suggestion, then? Like I said, if Churchkey won't work out, Atomic is fine since that's the only other place that you didn't shoot down. If you have ideas, please share.
posted by youcancallmeal at 8:09 PM on December 30, 2009

Well, Saturday at 7 is tough. There are no happy hours to be had and any place with a lot of space is likely to fill up. I know Science Club has been a big hit in the past, Rocket Bar has a similar feel and Recessions always has lots of space and is even more dive-y. So that's Dupont and Chinatown. Wonderland in Columbia Heights won't be too crowded at 7 and neither would The Red Derby, if we wanted a true dive. Again, I don't know Atomic Cafe and I'm more of a follower (and apparently a shooter-downer) than an organizer for these things.
posted by allen.spaulding at 8:46 PM on December 30, 2009

I'm a big fan of The Red Derby. Not a far walk from the metro, either.

I will be there. Unless wild horses keep me away. Or summat.
posted by zennie at 11:05 AM on December 31, 2009

Does everybody know to wear pajamas to MrMoonPie's brunch? Dress for excess, people.

I also think the Red Derby is a great spot for a meetup. It's cheap beer and anarchy; if we need to pull some tables together nobody is going to stop us. The food is mostly from the fryer and lowbrow but satisfying and affordable.

Atomic is good too, the shuffleboard is worth the trip. Last I knew, Rich still works there, but not Saturday nights. Atomic and some pies from Vace would be an epic meet-up combo.

I would be all about Little Miss Whiskey's, but then you get the "No Metro to H Street" complaint. Alas. :)

I'm not hard to please, but last time I went there (in September) the music was loud and horrible and the crowd was the same asshole hill staffers that make you want to avoid every decent Pennsylvania Ave watering hole. Sorry to be a Debbie Downer, but the Little Miss is not a Hit.

Nota Bene: This will work (eventually) whether or not you choose to target a designated meetup, but based on member prevalence, we recommend that you focus your efforts in American and European cities.

Alternatively, you can ask if people are "Friends of Jessamyn" which makes it seem a bit more like a self-help group but is a little more subtle. Of course, I find the phrase, "Are you guys from the internet?" HILARIOUS and have been known to ask even with people I already know just because I so much enjoy saying that.

I'm going to be presenting at World's Fair Use Day in DC on Tuesday the 12th and there's something of a meetup after the event at Capitol City Brewery on 2 Massachusetts Avenue Northeast, from 4-6pm. If anyone wants to have a drink with me and some DIYBookScanner.org people, as well as a probable mess of copyfighters, I'd love to see you there.

Wish I could have made the meetup on the 16th. :\ Get drunked 4 me.
