Amsterdam! February 9, 2010 9:08 AM   Subscribe

Amsterdam Meetup! I'll be in Amsterdam the weekend of March 6-7. Let's have a beer.

The Saturday, maybe late afternoon or evening works best for me. I'm already planning to meet up with jouke and possibly a few others.

Who's in?

OK, I'm in. Any ideas about venue yet?

I'll leave that to the locals. I think jouke had some ideas.
jouke?

Yes, vacapinta, I've met up with mefites in Proeflokaal De Wildeman before. It has the look of an old school Dutch pub (bruine kroeg). So that's nice for foreign visitors.
They have a wide gamut of beer which is a good thing if that's what we're after.
I don't live in A'dam so I'm not that knowledgeable. I've sent a friend of mine who does a question for more suggestions.

Bastards, I just left there today. I think this is intentional.

My friend has responded: other good cafés are Het Papeneiland and De Twee Zwaantjes

Man, I thought he'd never leave.

Any choice is fine with me.

(And I'm sorry that I won't be meeting Meatbomb. Though I'd worry about him wanting to read us the entire Treaty of Westphalia - or am I confusing him with somebody else?)

I may be in. Not sure!

De Wildeman sounds good. How does 5pm sound? On Saturday March 6?
posted by vacapinta at 3:28 AM on February 12, 2010

Sounds good to me.

Like music to my ears.

Btw I see that we're double on the meetup roster; once added by me and once added by vacapinta.

We're just that important.
posted by jouke at 9:48 AM on February 13, 2010

Uhoh. I think we broke it!
posted by vacapinta at 2:13 PM on February 13, 2010

Okay; I think I'll drop by for a beer or two and to say hi. Chances of me having time for anything else on a saturday evening are slim, I fear. But yay!

Incredible. Lizsterr and I are vacationing in Amsterdam that week, and are getting in on Saturday afternoon.

Assuming our flight isn't delayed, you wouldn't mind having a few jetlagged 'Mericans stop by, would you?
posted by supercres at 11:43 AM on February 23, 2010

Plus, we're from Philly; our meetup is the next day. Womp-womp.

So we'll stop in for a few much-needed beers, I bet. (Flight actually gets in in the morning, and hell, it'll be almost midnight our time.) If we see you, we'll see you. If you see a pair of semi-befuddled American twenty-somethings, wave us down.
posted by supercres at 12:29 PM on February 23, 2010

Yeah, just drop by.
We'll have to find a way to recognise eachother. Since you quite likely won't be the only american twenty-something in the pub.
I'll send everybody who has mentioned in thread wanting to come my mobile phone nr during the days beforehand.

Sounds good. Especially since it's my favourite pub.
posted by daveje at 4:01 AM on February 24, 2010

Befuddled too, I bet.

Sounds good; looking forward to it.

Btw I stumbled on a remark by vacapinta that I want to point out. He says
Amsterdam is a cute town but a week is too long to spend there.
Those are fighting words! Let's chase him on our bicycles!
posted by joost de vries at 4:44 AM on February 25, 2010

The asker of that question was clearly an inexperienced traveler so the advice was apt. They should go to "beginner" cities like Paris or London. Amsterdam is for more experienced travelers.

Yes, thats what I meant to say.
posted by vacapinta at 5:07 AM on February 25, 2010

Plus, kids. If kids were in the picture (most definitely not the case), I doubt we would've chosen Amsterdam.

I'll join the bicycle chase. (Just let me rent one first.)

Agh, my ire is deflated. Well done vacapinta.

supercres: we have kids here, you know. They turn out all right. :)

If by alright you mean drug addled prostitute gay married euthanasiists. On bikes.
posted by joost de vries at 2:08 AM on February 26, 2010

Oh, I have no doubt about that. But their parents aren't 25-year-old tourists :)

(Either way, apologies for unintended implications.)

No worries.

Dude, I wasn't offended. Just joking around!
posted by Skyanth at 9:00 AM on February 26, 2010

I sent out my mobile phone nr and a description of what we look like to all of you.
See you soon.

Crap yes. I'm swamped in work atm and may need to cancel. I'll send joost/jouke a text if I won't be able to show up. Apologies in advance if I don't get there; I'm trying to make it work.

(Actually supercres, it's all your fault for making that kids joke. I'm just so offended I don't even want to run the risk of meeting you. ;)

I am clearly an anxious mess, and it's interfering with humor detectors. I will not be such a wreck Saturday night. Beer will help.

Looking forward to meeting you all then (when you can rib me some more about not being able to take a joke).
posted by supercres at 2:53 PM on March 4, 2010

Well, I can relate that going to a place you've never been before is exciting; what will you encounter etc.
And the jokes were a bit ambiguous; was there a subtext or not. So I think your sense of humour is fine.
See you soon!

Here's what I look like if anyone else is reading this thread as well.
posted by vacapinta at 3:12 AM on March 5, 2010

Oh yeah, if I do make it, I look like my profile picture (though I doubt I'll be wearing a hat).

supercres: I assure you I was joking all the way through. Apologies for making you feel bad!

I was at De Wildeman a bit after five but I must have missed you guys. Since I didn't have a mobile phone on me and I was a bit tired anyway, I went home after one beer to grab some dinner. Sorry, hope you all have / had a good time.
posted by rjs at 9:21 AM on March 6, 2010

Sorry, but we couldn't make it. We had to make a last-minute trip to London and didn't have time to get to de Wildeman, drink a beer or two, and still get to the ferry on time. As it is, we're still dockside, because the ship crashed and had to be re-booted.
posted by daveje at 2:06 PM on March 6, 2010

I was at the Wildeman from 5 - 5:30. Then I got fed up with standing at the bar on my own and walked around the city for a bit. At 6:15 vacapinta and company arrived. We scoured the pub again for familiar faces but saw none. Since the pub was very crowded and I hadn't been called or texted on my mobile phone we went to a different place.

Huh, rjs, I was standing at the bar trying to make eye contact with people and be as approachable as possible. But apparently we didn't recognise each other. Sorry about that.
posted by joost de vries at 10:16 PM on March 6, 2010

No problem, glad you did manage to hook up with vacapinta and company.
posted by rjs at 10:55 PM on March 6, 2010

I just clean forgot to text, jouke, sorry about that. Hope you had a great time.
posted by Skyanth at 5:31 AM on March 7, 2010

It's cool. I had also arranged to meet several friends there. So, joost and I did meet up and moved to another bar with four others. Great fun! Hope everyone here has a great time in Amsterdam. Its bitter cold but the sun is beautiful and warming. Though I have to admit, Mrs. V and I did dip into a sauna to warm up for a couple hours today

I'm still here myself of course, typing this from a cafe with wi-fi near the friends house I'm staying at.

Sorry we couldn't make it; Liz and I didn't get much sleep on the plane. That plus jetlag led to an uneventful Saturday night.

We will definitely be back to your fair city in the future, though.
