I know, right? March 4, 2010 10:34 AM   Subscribe

Our beloved linguist and surfer gal iamkimiam is leaving us for colder waters and even more linguist in-jokes. She's going far, far away for grad school, and we're going to give her a San Francisco metafilter meetup sendoff in the best way we know how: A MEETUP AT FRJTZ!!

The meetup will be at Frjtz, which is at 590 Valencia Street at 17th, conveniently close to the 16th St BART station. The meetup will begin at 7 pm on April 10th, and go until we decide to go somewhere else, the place closes, or Kim gets tired of us.

And yes, this is also part of the seekrit San Francisco plot to take over the meetup sidebar with Bay Area events.

How is Frjtz pronounced?

"Christ, again?"

I don't know what the real pronunciation is but mostly we seem to say Freetz or Fritz or a smushing of the two.

In order to pronounce it properly, I would have to cut out your tongue.

I always assumed it was Freets, kind of like pommes frites, but the owner pronounces it Fritz.

It happened really fast, but I'm glad I got to see a bunch of everybody at the Cortex shindig, and my roots in the Bay Area grew so deep so fast, that I'm sure to be back for frequent visits and harpy-like demands for fries with ponzu ketchup.

I should probably get on the stick and demand myself a Twin Cities Welcome Meetup now that I've unboxed my party clothes.

But more importantly, is Minneapolis on the way to Cardiff? Can iamkimiam swing by on her way out? Is she taking that pink coat with her, or can I hang onto it for her until she comes back?

Until then, meetups, YAY! I wish I could attend the other SF gatherings, but they're not at FRJTZ, so there. (And I'll be at the ones in the UK during that time, leaving today...whee, I have 3 meetups in the sidebar right now!)

ORthey, didn't know you had a BA in linguistics! We must nerd out at the meetup for a minute. And I have to say thanks in person for Flyball's Lament, Fingerpickujah, and Way Up High...they got me through some tough times for sure.

padraigin, the coat you're talking about...I think it's actually orange. It's got white piping and front pockets with big buttons, right? Send me your address and it's yours for "safekeeping"! (I'm getting rid of pretty much everything I own, and the MeFites got the dibs!)

roll truck roll, NNNnnnooooooooooo!
potch, YES!!!

I assume that Frjtz is written in IPA. Therefore, I pronounce it with a trill, a glide, and no vowels.

"Are SF meetups lurker-friendly?"

Absolutely! We usually have a table all set up for you guys with crayons and fun little placemats...

Seriously though, you should come. Maybe no one will recognize your username--it's cool, very few people are so prolific. I don't post or comment a lot on the site, but the SF Mefites tolerate me pretty well regardless. If you're shy, it's cool. Most of us are! I usually just listen to everyone else talking, and then throw up a little in my mouth when people want to know things about me.

And no need to catch up on the most popular posts/comments either. It's not like we're hosting "Metafilter:LIVE!" (Although that sounds pretty cool now that I think about it. Get on it, Matt.)

It's just a bunch of really cool people hanging out, drinkin', eatin', having a great time.
posted by sambosambo at 11:25 AM on April 9, 2010 [3 favorites]

Seriously though...watch out for the crayons and placemats...I was gone for nearly two hours at the Berkeley meetup because of this trap (and there's evidence). Drawing and drinking was a new low for me, and entirely irresistible. Also, cute dogs. You think they're there to be all entertaining and shit, but really, they just contort your brain in ways that make you blind to humans. Before you know it, you'll be gurgling and cooing and diverting all your attention into making them love you. Burritos go missing. Time is but lost in the nether. You have been warned.

I just called Frjtz on Valencia and somebody's already reserved the big table/room in the back. Unless it was one of youse guys, we'll have to sit at the smaller tables in front. I told the manager we'd like to pull them together to seat 10 - 15 people and he said fine but to let the staff know we've arranged this in advance.

So we kinda have a reservation in the name of Kim, our guest of honor, for a DIY big table in the front. (I figured "Metafilter" would be too hard to explain.)

I just check the SF ASL group, which very frequently has their meetups on Fridays or Saturdays at Frjtz (which I attend when I can)...somebody just posted how sick they are of the place (they've had like, their last 10 or so meetups there) and so they're actually meeting next Friday, at Medjool...which ironically, I always thought would be an awesome place for a MetaFilter meetup (although it can be pricey). Anyways, I just thought that was super meta-funny and I've been meaning to share that for a while, since I'm a member of both groups and now I see that Frjtz is becoming a sort of in-joke for them too.
---
No worries 'bot! Have fun in Tahoe you two!
---
One thing I love about the whole skipping out of the country thing is that no matter where I go, I never really leave you guys, because you're all right here!* Which is kind of what makes this place so great.

I was with my linguist friends last week and we were talking about MetaFilter. They were saying that they don't quite get it, but they think it's amazing that anywhere MeFites go in the world, they're not alone. There's a whole community full of interesting, intelligent people, ready to help out with any obscure problem or need. And I was kind of like, "Yep." I say they get it more than they realize. Now they just need to get sucked into some thread and pony up the $5 and it'll be all over for them too. :D

*But SF meetups are tops and I will miss seeing you all in person, and with burritos, for sure. (Looking way forward to tonight!!)

And I started thinking about the first time I met iamkimiam. We were talking about 9/11 conspiracy theories with pantsrobot at loquacious' secret afterparty. That was over two years ago.

Anyways, I just wanted to say--and I'm sure I speak for many others--that Kim's great, and even though we're internet friends and we'll be just as much in contact via twitter and Mefi, I'll really miss seeing you at meetups.
