Glasgow meetup ? March 19, 2010 6:58 AM   Subscribe

I wonder if any mefites still live in Glasgow ? would they consider meeting for tea and scones ?

Here I am, sticking my neck out - putting out feelers to see if anyone in the Glasgow area is still alive and capable of attending a meetup. I think we're all pretty shocked by the death of jackmo but maybe we can come together and use this as some sort of healing event. I was thinking maybe we could light some candles and float some of his old articles down the Clyde as a tribute ? Having said that, apparently there are lots of interesting things to do in Glasgow - a faraway land of which I know nothing. Perhaps someone may know of some interesting post modern Bingo playing establishment/Organic hairdressers that we can all meet up at ?

not unless something's changed since the last time people asked.

I don't live anywhere near Glasgow, but there are few things that I like more than tea and scones. (polexa makes amazing gluten free cherry almond scones, btw) So if you're ever in Texas, or I ever find my way to Glasgow, we'll have to have a tea and scone meetup.

He last commented in 2010. Also, his birthday is next week. Happy early bday, jack_mo! Keep on keepin' on!

Hmmm, I was actually thinking the other day that we should have another meetup; I missed the last one in the 'burg, and it's been – CHRIST! – more than two years since the last Glasgow shindig, if I mind right.

So yeah, let's have a meetup. jack_mo isn't in Glasgow at the moment, but myself and bonaldi are still here, for our sins, as are, unless things have changed, ClanvidHorse and By The Grace Of God. Maybe we could all gather and have some kind of internet party, and the sarge could hoof it through from auld reekie. How about sometime next week – or maybe the week after?

Also (speaking for myself, but I'm sure also for many others): jack_mo: come back to MeFi! We miss you!

Does anyone really live in Glasgow?

I kid! I kid!

Um... I live in Glasgow (if the west end counts, although I am originally from sunny Springburn). Can I have a scone?

I'm in Glasgow, and definitely up for any scone-focused internet party (with or without actual scones).

So sgt.serenity's "death of jackmo" remark's just black humor ("humour"?) riffing on jack_mo's previous online absence? No adverting to anybody's actual death?

Jack's not dead, no! (He is alive!)

Up for this. How about Firebird, week on Wednesday, 8pm?

How about Firebird, week on Wednesday, 8pm?

I'm down with that (and not at all biased because it's only about 150 yards from where I live). Anyone else, or is it just going to be me and bonaldi grouching about the state of newspapers whilst forlornly eyeing up the better-looking bar staff?

I live in Glasgow, haven't been to firebird but would like to go. Give me a shout when details are confirmed.

The 31st? I'll be up for a wee stroll across the park to join you. Should I fashion a scone corsage so you know I'm a MeFite?

Im also happy with firebird 8pm a week on wednesday - although i have no idea where it is. Better looking bar staff ?

I will attempt to attend!

I'll be there. Seconding the scone corsages idea!

Hey, meosl, are you a fellow Glasgow EngLang person by any chance? If you are we might actually have met before, which would make the spotting-people part easier...

Cool, so we're confirmed. I see it's already been added to the meetup sidebar; for the benefit of the good sarge, Firebird can be found here. If you're coming through from Edinburgh, you can get the tube from Buchanan St to Kelvinhall, and it's a five minute walk; otherwise, buses from outside Central that'll take you pretty much right to its door are the 9, 16, 18 and the 62.

As for the people-spotting, there are some pix of past meetups here, most of which have some form of rudimentary identification on them, even if they're sometimes of questionably-lit pissed people. For those who wish to follow the Len Beard Index as an identification aid, it's currently outperforming Bonnie Prince Billy, but has some way to go before achieving parity with Karl Marx.

See you all there!

Catseye, you have mail!

I may be double-booked, but will try to pop in, even if that means meeting you all when I'm (fairly) sober and you're all pissed ;0(

Hello all, I'll definitely try to attend although I may not be able to make it. I'll use the handy Len-Beard-ometer to find my way rather than get stuck wandering aimlessly. Despite having been in loads of the boozers in Finnieston and the inestimable Mother India Cafe around the corner, I've never been to Firebird so looking forward to it if I can get there.

I'd also like to apologise for any perception that edinburgh is better than glasgow, which is patently false.

That was great. Good to see the sarge, ClanvidHorse, By The Grace Of God and little apollo again, and good to meet meosl and Catseye. We even managed to bump up the numbers with a couple of good friends of mine who were coincidentally there at the same time and gracefully accepted a MeFi meetup being foisted on their dinner.

We definitely shouldn't leave it so long until the next one ...
