Metafilter meet up in Seoul? April 29, 2010 11:13 AM   Subscribe

I will be in Seoul for 3 weeks in May. Any one want to meet up then?

Preferable sometime between 17th to 31st. Been to a few in Manchester, but would be super exciting to meet in my hometown. Open to any location, haven't been in Korea for a few years so don't know where the nice places are anymore...

Maybe...PM me! I'm in central Seoul, near Wangshimni, actually, but could meet anywhere downtown or in Kangnam.

I rarely get up to Seoul (it's the other end of the country from me), but on the off-chance that I'm there, sure.

Chances are, sadly, slim to none, though.

I could make it up from Daegu if it got organized. Not to be super-obvious, but Itaewon is centrally located and has a few good places for a drink-up. Kangnam would be fine too. Big Rock Brewery has some good homemade beers, right next to Kangnam Station.

We need a brave Seoul mefite to take the initiative! Meet-up, chuseyo!

Unfortunately I won't be there till late july/beginning of august. Been thinking of one of these posts myself. Have a great time and scope out lots of cool places to let me know of!

Can I tentatively throw up the 20th of May, Thursday as a date?
Think the next day is Buddha's birthday, so can make it a late meeting.

Or 16th of May, Sunday for a nice afternoon jaunt around 선유도 Sunyudo, which I've been dying to see. Sorry for the link in Korean, but I couldn't find an english site. It's an old water treatment plant that's been turned into a park.

just some stones to get the discussion rolling...

Okay, I'll take the reins if it will help.

May 20 is perfect for me. Evening, though.

Let's meet for dinner around 6. Any vegetarians? If so, we can do veggie food in Insadong and hit a minsokjujeom (trad drinking house) after. If not, we can do meat--Itaewon's fine, and postprandial beverages will be easy to accomplish there, too.

I'm pretty flexible on everything but the date at this point. I *may* be available other times, but May 20 is pretty perfect.

I've been here eight years, btw, all of it in Seoul. If anyone wants my phone #, just PM me!

I don't know about anyone else's dietary habits but one of the perks of going to Korea for me is to eat MEAT. Not talking about an orgy Mongolian style, but would really like to dig into some 삼겹살 (belly pork) ..but I'm flexible.

20th looks good to me too.

Going through past Seoul Meet-up posts, seems it's a tricky one. Would really like this one to work out!

Mods--looks like this is actually happening, on May 20.

I know a good Samgyeopsal place in Apgujong where I used to work. But probably easy to find anywhere else.
posted by bardic at 11:02 PM on April 30, 2010

Apgu's really convenient for me...I don't know any good places down there for drinks after, though...
posted by Joseph Gurl at 1:55 AM on May 1, 2010

Apgujong is my old hang out. I use to work there a couple years ago, so pretty confident there are numerous choices for drinks. As for the best place...I can hit up a few friends about choice hot spots. Transport will be convenient for me as well.

Yay! Seoul Meet-Up! Hope some others can make it too...

Okay, so here's the plan:

Thursday May 20:
Apgujeong at 6:00 PM on. Dinner at the meat place Bardic recommends (Bardic: is there a preferred meeting place...near the subway station, preferably?). Postprandial beverages (2-cha) at a place slyrabbit recommends. More postprandial beverages somewhere else near there. Strong language and drunken arguments. Throwing and smashing of items of considerable value. Wailing, gnashing of teeth, rending of garments.

Friday May 21:
Sheepish, apologetic emails. Disabling of MeFi accounts. Personal sobriety vows.

As long as a noraebang is not involved I'm good with the itinerary outlined by Joseph Gurl

Noreabang will be involved over my. dead. body.

Damn, that sounds right smack dab square in the wonderchickensian wheelhouse. And Friday the 21st is a holiday...

I'm starting to doubt the existence of this wonderchicken...

You're not the only one.

So who's coming?

bardic
slyrabbit
me

um, stav? If it's just the three of us, we'll have a much harder time blocking all the chairs to prevent drunken, friendly ajeoshi from joining our table for some English practice...

Actually, I can't commit yet. But I can probably make it.

If you get off at Sinsa station and walk up to Green Street (Garosugil) you'll see wall-to-wall restaurants and cafes. Most of them are actually Italian or fusion places but, if you make a left onto Green Street and then immediately take your first left (street goes downwards, you'll actually be walking back towards Sinsa Station), you'll hit a stretch of galbi places almost all of which are good. (I'm blanking on the name of the one that I know has really good samgyeopsal, but it's a street where you won't have trouble finding something delicious.) The one I know is good is across from a Foodbox chain restaurant.

There are tons of bars and hofs in the area as well. If I can make it I'd be happy to show you the ones I like but if I can't, it's a really happening area. You won't go wrong looking for either bars, hofs, or clubs.

FWIW, you could get to this area from Apgujong Station as well, but Sinsa Station is much closer. I'll get back to you guys this weekend with my plans.

And importantly, best meeting place? I'd say Sinsa Station. The freaking' exit number is escaping me, but you'd want to be on the north side of the major street, and to the east. The maps inside the station will definitely mark Green Street, so whichever exit is closest to that.

OH HAI -- just noticed the date is the 20th. I'll be working, sorry!

But I'd still suggest that if Apgujong is a central location for you, the whole Green Street experience is worth checking out. The most beautiful and wealthy Koreans anywhere, including no small number of serious fashion victims. It's really worth seeing and if you dig a little you'll find good galbi or samgyeopsal no problem. Just find the street that runs perpendicular to Green Street on a downward slope. Follow your nose -- there are plenty of authentic and affordable Korean joints, as opposed to the pricey Italian and French places.

Have fun!

If you run out of things to do/drink, there's a whole new bevy of bars and hofs if you walk north-east towards Apgujong Station itself.

Oh, and one of my favorite bars ever is called Cafe des Artes. It's one Green Street itself, but it's a second-floor place. Entrance is just a few feet off of Green Street itself. Really funky decor and atmosphere, reasonably priced beer and wine.

So, just me and slyrabbit, then.

Hmm.

Not a huge fan of Karosugil, and if you're not coming, then it may not make so much sense to go to your spots, bardic. Then again, I know an [em]awesome[/em] chili-batter fried chicken/stuffed chili place there...an institution, really...

Slyrabbit--yr call, I guess.

Stavros: if you can't make it, I'm not sure this is even a meetup :(

(See? That guilt-trip is one of the things you can drunkenly berate me for! YOU KNOW YOU WANT IT)

I just came across this...

And, wanted to ask that you all have a toast to me and the year I spent there many, many years ago... one of the best years of my life... I miss Seoul.... have fun.....

Oh, I do, most assuredly. But I think I'm going to have to once again bow out before I've even really bowed in.

I'd be in. Hongdae has a really nice dongdongju place (The one in the alleyway that's across from Ho Bar, uh, 5, I think. Seats 10 or less-ish) that's right near the place where they serve drinks in plastic IV-bag thingies from a take out window. Vinyl! It's a must!
posted by GilloD at 11:19 PM on May 3, 2010

Also, Bar Da in Hongdae is good for small groups, makes a strong drink and is the quintessential chill out bar.
posted by GilloD at 11:21 PM on May 3, 2010

Okay. I think Hongdae's the best choice. I know a great samgyeop place (I lived around there from 2002-2007) and there's an awesome minsokjujeom next door. A zillion third place options.

So...6 PM, May 20
Hongdae (Hongik University) station, exit 5

Hongdae is fine, but I really don't know any places there so I'll be relying on Joseph Girl, and hello GilloD!

shame bardic and stavros can't make it..don't want to through a wrench in the works now, but would it be better to change the date and maximise the number or should we go ahead with the 20th?

Too cool for school

Only if 'cool' can be construed to mean 'utterly at one's spouse's beck and call'. I shouldn't really blame her, though. I am also very very lazy.

slyrabbit:

I suspect changing the date won't increase the likelihood of a wonderchicken sighting. I'm not sure about bardic.

Conversely, changing the date will probably disqualify me, and I'm worth like nine of those dudes, easy.
